The people claiming she was obstructing ICE by parking across the road are proved wrong here. The people claiming she was being arrested for obstruction and disobeying orders are proved wrong here. Ross did not ask her to move her car, or to get out of the car. It was the cowboys who ran up with no idea of what was going on, screaming at her to get out of the fucking car, who caused this. And Ross suddenly draws his gun and fires like she was the Unabomber. NO excuse, no justification. Ross murdered her, and the agents who caused it are accessories. And most appalling when her car rolled away and crashed, they turned and walked the other way. Appalling.

My question, and I've not seen anyone raise it, is when did he unholster his weapon? I did not see anything before the incident that would warrant having it out, and the interval between the car starting to move forward and the first shot seems to be about one second. That is not time to consider (in a front of brain sense) the use of deadly force. That is someone with his hand at the ready and predisposed to do just what he did.

And now ICE is refusing to allow three Members if Congress from the Minneapolis area to inspect its local holding facility, giving ni reason whatsoever. And in direct, indeed flagrant contravention of a federal court order. And saying screw-you to the courts, never-mind the absolutely foundational opinion of Chief Justice John Marshall in Marbury v. Madison, 5 U.S. (1 Cranach) 137 (1803). Trump idealizes Andrew Jackson who ultimately ignored a writ of mandamus from the same chief justice and sent the Cherokee off on the Trail of Tears.

Which could well be where we're heading today.

To my thinking he decided to murder her when she said she wasn't afraid of him, and after that was just looking for the opportunity. Fuck these people, I hope at some point the state charges him with 2nd degree murder.

(Literal trigger warning: dark humor follows)

It is rumored that Kristi Noem has fired ICE agent Jonathan Ross, not because he murdered Renee Good in cold blood, but because he failed to shoot the dog in the head as well.

Asha Rangappa has a good newsletter on this. My impression after viewing this is of an agent who felt disrespected and annoyed rather than someone who was in fear for their life. His under-the-breath comment at the end is consistent with annoyance and contempt rather than fear. If masked federal agents have the right to use deadly force whenever they are annoyed, we are in a tough spot. This is beginning to feel like a Kent State moment to me.

I hope it is ok to post this. Here is a link to Rangappa's post on the shooting video analysis.

Heather Cox Richardson (MSNOW appearance on Velshi): Good's statement to ICE that she is not angry with him is a de-escalating move, which makes her dominant in the power dynamic. Pulling a gun and shooting is his way of claiming the dominant position.

I hadn't heard this before, but it makes so much sense, and is consistent with the comment, AFTER the shots were fired, "Fucking bitch."

I live in Minneapolis, about four miles from the scene of the murder. I am so grateful for the Bulwark's coverage. It is the best -- both factual and human. I think Sara's comment that the noise on the ICE officer's video is him dropping the phone -- not him being hit by the car, is so obvious after hearing it, but I had not thought of it, and haven't heard it elsewhere.

I'm glad that Tim made the point that these so-called "tough guys" always claim they feared for their life in these situations. Tim called him a wuss. I would use a stronger word that rhymes and starts with a 'p' and ends with a 'y'. They're not so tough. They are the biggest fraidy cats of them all.

It also infuriates me to hear officials claim over and over again that he fired a shot (or shots) in self-defense. There is nothing defensive about a gun. It is an offensive weapon. He's the crazed lunatic committing an offensive act against her. She was practicing self-defense by trying to drive away.

I'm sad but not surprised to see a new line of justification getting traction today on social media that goes, "Well, of course this was a murder but her wife made it happen by taunting the agent." So many people just cannot let go of their misogyny and obedience training.

I realize that you are not saying Good's wife was "taunting" the agent, but I've listened to her words to Ross at least ten times, and if those are taunts, my god, the agent has to be the most thin-skinned human being alive. Are we at a point where we can't even jibe with one another without taking offense?

If that's his excuse for coldblooded murder, he's a disgrace to the entire ICE force, and that's saying a lot because ICE agents are already the most disgraceful group in American "law enforcement" we have ever had.

It's an especially ridiculous excuse for his crime, given that there were other people on the street yelling things like "Fucking losers" and calling them assholes, as opposed to her sassy little "Go get some lunch, big boy." Those agents picked their victims and made a decision. If they had succeeded in getting Good out of the car, I have no doubt they all would have roughed up both Good and her wife. ICE agents have done that a lot, making examples of demonstrators. But that plan got thwarted, so Ross went off and murdered a woman because he could. The "fucking bitch" tells it all.

The fuckers saying this murder was justified and that everyone must submit to the Trump goons are the same fuckers that wave the "Don't tread on me" flag when they lose an election. It is infuriating.

They are entirely consistent. They are the same ones who say it is fine to blow up boats in the Caribbean without any evidence of criminal activity being presented.

There is a direct through-line between J6 insurrectionists and those who justify bombing boats in the Caribbean and shooting an innocent woman in the head in Minneapolis.

They are people that are broken to the point of having lost their humanity but still manage to believe they are the only "righteous" humans.

We have to accept the Morlocks are now a sizeable portion of the American public and have gained control of the government.

This is not a law enforcement video, it's a terrorist snuff video. They did not need to release it. They did not need to confirm the killer's identity. But they did. The message is that they can kill anyone anywhere for no reason at all, not just with complete impunity, they can also rub it in your face and they will. Murder in full daylight will now be defended all the way up the chain of command to the president himself. Immediately. Not a minute of reflection or investigation. Renee Good was called a terrorist before her body was even cold. She wasn't called a woman who spoke calmly to her killer alone in her car, she was called part of a "left-wing network," "a lunatic fringe against our law enforcement officers” and her killing was called "a tragedy of her own making" by the Vice-President of the United States. Her murder was her fault.

What do we do?

1) Demand that Minneapolis and/or Minnesota issue an arrest warrant for her killer, Jonathan Ross. While he and his fellow ICE agents had no probable cause to suspect Renee Good had committed a crime, there is ample evidence that Ross did. Plenty of people have been arrested and charged with far less evidence than this. Attorneys who defend police officers in shootings said they would advise a client to seek a plea deal. The second and third shots he fired were after he was clear of Good's car, thus clearly not self-defense.* Even if the case will be opposed by DOJ it is important to file it and get it on the record even if Ross is granted immunity or found not guilty. We cannot just shrug and let them get away with this because it's difficult or unlikely to succeed.

2) Do not forget Renee Good and do not stop demanding accountability. Protest peacefully. Keep saying her name. Keep showing her face. Don't give up or surrender to despair. Instead strengthen your resolve. Record every interaction and incident with federal officers. Live stream it if you can.

3) Vote. Make sure you are registered, have ID, know where your polling place is, vote early, help others to get registered, get ID, get to polling places or drop off their ballot as early as possible. Volunteer to work at the polls.

I LOVE you guys; the Bulwark is keeping me sane right now. But one key correction – this is not body cam footage, it's video the agent recorded with his cell phone, which explains why the video angle abruptly moves when he fires the first shot – the hand holding the phone presumably moves as either the agent takes aim or as a result of the recoil of the gun.

The fact that the wife of Renee Good was calmly pointing out that she expected for the agents to show up at her house later because they can note the license plate needs to be emphasized more, too. There is no reason for the agent to do ANYTHING at that point. Why even approach the car? Why not just say, 'okay, drive away now and we'll see you in a few hours'? Why not get back in your vehicle and drive around the Honda Pilot knowing that you can follow up later IF any laws were actually broken, which seems like a big IF to me. Perhaps it's an act of civil disobedience but clearly Renee Good and her wife were prepared for consequences of that and still had some trust in the justice system and protections of being American citizens but now this officer has made ALL law enforcement less safe and ALL of the public less safe because he is clearly a bad officer and cannot do his job correctly.
