This week on Bulwark on Sunday, Bill Kristol talks with Adrian Carrasquillo about the mass arrests in Southern California, the communities fighting back, and the dangerous precedent of military force in American cities.
Regarding Adrian Carrasquillo's comments on the regime's using the law as a convenience (at ~36:20), that's what authoritarian regimes do because they ARE the law. That is the difference between our constitutional democracy and the GOP's coup, the constitution is THE law whereas under the GOP, the Dear Leader is. Trump and the GOP should hang for treason. They are traitors.
The audio on this post is almost unlistenable. It's execrable. But it isn't uniquely so-- it's beset by the same audio production issues that commenters have been posting about for quite a while now, on this particular series and on others.
You've been adding quite a lot of talent lately, and yes, these are people who are worth paying attention to. You've expanded the range and number of avenues they have to reach their audiences. Now imagine you'd done all this hiring and added all these columns in the days of print, putting out all this good new content, and your print shop ran them on oil-splotched paper and used smeary ink.
Of course you would never tolerate that in a million years, not even think of it, hit the roof if you saw it. But that's what this level of audio production is, translated to contemporary audio and audio-visual media like podcasts and youtube. It's like a blurry, smeary printed page.
Your expanding stable of talent deserves audio production to match what they do. Anything less short-changes them as well as listeners and viewers.
Please consider upgrading and professionalizing your audio production across all offerings for either your next investment in solidifying the staff you have, or your next accession of new talent.
People are spontaneously protesting because they don't feel heard, seen or that we are paying attention and are just letting this happen....... to their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters wether they are legal or not, its a wholesale round-up of people who are guilty of being brown
SO Instead of "Democrats"trying to triage this mess "in situ" in the location and arena that trump wants to supports his project-2025 propaganda campaign of dismal, deceptive, depravity
HEY GOV TAKE THE MANTLE...TAKE OVER THE PROTEST, "CALL THEM OUT"
Redirect this protest, reassemble this into a "formal" action at xxx stadium, or property large enough to host. Offer to bus those protesters to that venue, include a call-out to everyone else to join in this protest, include public transportation to help... Make this an all out anti-media event providing the protection we all expect under our constitution...
CALL THEM OUT for not following constitution, rule of law, due process
CALL THEM OUT for not protecting legal "US citizens" by illegally profiling and incarceration
CALL THEM OUT for their cruelty against law abiding non-violent, non-citizens tax payers trying to navigate a broken immigration system
I could keep on going on the CALL THEM OUT theme. Its simple, catchy and brings us all into the fight as we represent those who: have been, will have, or could be the next victim in the authoritarian teardown of our democratic principles.
CALL THEM OUT for not respecting ALL OF AMERICANs and AMERICA as the ideal it has always stood for and is held dearly in the core of our hearts and conscience
I think this is all orchestrated to add to the festivities on June 14, to show what a great man the commander in chief really is. I hope the weight of the tanks on the streets creates an enormous fault in the earth that will swallow all those on the reviewing stand.
Why don't we ever talk about the fact that the companies (small or large) t hire "illegal" people and never are held to account for that. Isn't it illegal??
One thing you didn’t discuss, the appalling conditions in ICE detention including sleeping on concrete floors, massive overcrowding, no medical treatment and in many cases only 1 very inadequate meal a day. Overcrowding contributing to death. If already over capacity and daily quotas of 3,000 a day, things can only get much worse.
Who ARE this disgusting 5% who think the spouses of US citizens should be deported? America is a country of immigrants, for goodness sake! What happened here? This vile government wouldn’t be here at all if native Americans had had the wherewithal to deport immigrants.
California went through it's anti-Mexican phase in the 90's. Most of us in this state realize that immigrants are an integral part of the economy and we need them. I think that the Democrats need to keep reminding people about the immigration bill that Trump killed. Instead of prisons and mass deportations it included funds for additional immigration judges so these people can have due process. Create a process for dreamers and allocate sufficient funds for cities to support the people who are already here.
Immigration/deportation issues are just death for my Democrats. The reality is that swing voters in places like Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, etc., are not sympathetic generally to undocumented immigrants and are supportive of ICE deportation in most instances. Trump fully gets this point and he baits my Democrats to fight with him about these issues. For God’s sake, we (Dems) need to stick to winning issues like the economy, Medicaid and taxes and stop taking the bait on deportation/ICE battles.
Surprisingly , in my state (Oregon) there is a higher percentage foreign born residents, in the rural areas than in the cities . There are many more people in the cities ,of course . The most diverse county in the state is Jefferson county , county seat Madras , which is the largest city at 7456 total population . There , the "illegals ' are aq big part of the population
It may be similar in those larger states where "t***p country" is mainly rural , people are less anti-immigrant than we might think
There has been worse “unrest” in cities after winning championships than what happened in and around LA. They just want a fight. They want an excuse for invading our state and destroying us. A government that commits violence against its own people has forfeited any legitimacy. Yes, there is an insurrection, but it's not in California, it's in the White House. Who is going to hold the President accountable for breaking his oath to the Constitution? There can be no reconciliation without truth. Everyone who follows Trump and Miller further down in hell by breaking their oaths and our laws will face legal consequences for their actions. The worse they treat the people, the worse the consequences will be. Nonviolent noncooperation is our best weapon. This is not politics. This is about the survival of pluralistic democracy in the US.
Is there an argument for self-deportation to destroy the economy of the administration? Imagine if the majority of workers left, they would be begging them to return! At least they would not end up in CECOT, Libya, South Sudan or Rwanda. The immense contribution of undocumented immigrants to the United States will remain unappreciated until it is gone.

Me: "Because they're ethnonationalists Bill."
Mandatory shoutout to Adrian for representing Queens on the pod

Adrian, what a great addition you are to this fine crew of Bulwarkers!
It’s interesting that Trump and
Herr Miller would pick California as their tinder box and not say, Texas.
Furthermore, what a bunch of ginned up bullshit!
This administration could very easily draft legislation solving the immigration issue. Comprehensive reform suited to their liking.
But no. Let’s do deportation theatre in a Blue state to show how much we care.
SADD
Adrian is a great addition to the Bulwark. I always read his newsletter Huddled Masses.
Great podcast !
