I have to say that the "ecology" of showings doesn't work for me much any more. First, streaming is simply more convenient and their short term theater showings very inconvenient. In fact, I generally don't find out that a movie is out until it has already had its theater run. Then there's the lack of compelling movies, for me. Why would I choose to drive to a theater to see a movie that I don't find compelling?
That I don't find many compelling doesn't matter because many others do, so the studios need only play the odds well such that each set of pickier people will find enough compelling to see IF they let us know about them early enough to plan to see them in a theater.
Loved this convo. It’s wild that studios still treat comedy like a gamble when it’s one of the few genres that practically begs to be experienced in a room full of strangers. Laughter’s contagious, streaming can’t replicate that.
If The Naked Gun lands, maybe it gives the execs permission to greenlight funny again instead of just ironic. Fingers crossed.
I think the problem is that Horizon was supposed to be four parts, not two. Can they even edit part two into a decent ending? Possibly might have worked better being edited into a prestige tv series. Now it’s been so long if they haven’t shot all four parts it’d probably be a whole thing getting everyone back together to finish it.
The marketing of The Naked Gun has been brilliant, reminding us of why we should want to see a comedy in the theater. Particularly this bit, a fake charity ad where the impoverished charity is Hollywood comedies: https://youtu.be/K2SWxntGmL8
I am surprised to hear that “Companion” was considered a bomb in movie theaters.
A friend recommended it to me and then I listened to a review on this podcast.
That following weekend, my husband and I went to see it and really enjoyed it. The theater was packed.
Now that I think about it, that was the last movie we saw in theaters until Naked Gun came out…

What’s wrong with Matt Beloni? Did I miss something?
