A BIG problem is that key committee spots (House Rules being one) are awarded by seniority inside the House. There needs to be an orchestrated plan to get more seniority, NOT just get new faces.
FOXX, 20 Yrs seniority, the top R of 8. The"big deal" geriatric chair this year, in my opinion, was Virginia Foxx, R-NC, 5th district, a member of the house since 2005.
Oh no, 2005! Yes, 20 years seniority! She names her spots? She was chair. Maybe elected over the top-ranked and longer-serving Democrat as the Repubs had 8 of the 12 Committee votes (anybody that can confirm that? too many years since my Gr 8 civics.)
She and her 8 set up rules for the later budget vote so it would be be rammed through, FAST, LITTLE DISCUSSION. The rules they voted in, at 1 am, allowed ONE HOUR of talk per party. That's it. She was assisted in being awful, by 8 of the 12 Committee members being R's.
"Rules about rules" apparently let them do their meeting at 1 am.
YES, when voters and reporters are asleep and NOT watching. That's so convenient if you want to sneak bad stuff through.
"RADIO AD" FISHBACH AS FOXX SUCCESSOR. What if Foxx dies? Next on that committee's R-list, but of much shorter seniority, is Michelle Fishbach. Since 2021, at her long MN district 7 (along Minnesota's westmost edge, Fargo-land), she will have five years seniority by next year. She beat a Dem incumbent by cleverly complaining in RADIO ADS!! Old-fashioned Tech, BUT farmers listen to radio while out on the tractor, internet in rural areas often spotty if it exists at all. (Dems have no such ads?) THE AD--
She said that Nancy Pelosi was anti-rural hospitals, responsible for rising costs for all, and that the Dem opponent would not fight Pelosi. The IRONY? Fischbach then voted for a budget bill that threatens rural hospitals.
Democratic side of House Rules Committee, their four outnumbered by the Repub 8 on the Committee
McGOVERN, 28 years seniority, the top Dem of 4. He's from from Worcester County, MA, in Congress since 1997. He's born 1959, so near the peak year of Baby Boomer births.
Second-ranked on the Dem side is Mary Gay Scanlan, Penn. 5th district since 2019, so six years seniority, to be seven next year. She might be young in appearance, but was born 1959 as well.
Third-ranked, considerably younger, of 4 Dem, is Joe Neguse. In since 2019, but maybe at a later month than Scanlon, also six years of seniority. He attended the Rules meeting at 1am and complained loudly, but politely, about the timing, so his objection would be on the record. He's from Colorado's 2nd district, college town of Boulder, burbs NW of Denver. Born 1984, he's ethnically unusual, an Eritrean-American, well-spoken, was a regent of the University of Colorado, 2008 to 2015.
Fourth-ranked, Teresa Leger Fernandez, another born 1959. Of NM, in since 2021, so four years of seniority. NM is on other side of El Paso Texas.
MORE BUDGET NOTES
If I recall correctly, that 1 am meeting was on the day of the vote? The budget bill itself, H. R. 1, was also manipulative and conniving, by a different committee. At that stage, it had about 1100 pages, multiple ones gibberish, easily discouraging voters from checking. The brave Senate Parliamentarian (an R?), took out what's not allowed, if wanting it to be eligible to pass in the Senate by a 51-49 vote. That reduced it to about 900 pages, still onerous, lots of people fooled, some amendments made by the Senate, then sent back to the House with, once again, little discussion time allowed, very narrow margin for Trump, three votes of his small advantage due to the deceased ones L Egan names.
The said bill was repeatedly changed, complained Marjorie Taylor Green, R-GA, not on the Rules committee, voting later, with inadequate knowledge, so tricked into allowing something through that she did not approve of. The bill's last change was VERY recently, no convenient list of changes maintained so people knew what pages to check in the one hour per party, two hours total, for discussion that Madame Foxx rammed through as a rule.
The process was so awful that multiple Republicans complained, not just Democrats.
Virginia Foxx, R from NC, the ranking (longest-serving Member) headed the house rules committeews awarded to most seniority/geriatric, but was conniving and set up a 1 am meeting to set up rules so voters would not know the tricks being played, then chose rules to prevent debate on and improvement of what was still an 1,100 page budget monster.
Seniority means the more years served, the better the spots allocated, so the older they will be. If we take our geriatrics away before they take their geriatrics away, they win and we lose. Yet, youth is needed.
This implies there should be well-orchestrated departures and arrivals. Waiting for people to die is not well-orchestrated, cost the Dems this year, as three vacancies in the House by death were not then filled.
I'm 77 yes old and exasperated beyond measure at the Democratic Party hanging on to old timer way of doing business! It is critical that the Party actively solicit young people as advisors and candidates. To study recently successful campaign strategies like Mamdani, Slotkin, and Frost. Democratic messaging should focus on identifying key issues for constituencies and the plan to fix them. There should be no public intraparty squabbling and development of a unified, action based message addressing kitchen table issues.
This makes me think of this YouTube short I saw earlier today where Rob Mac from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" talks about working with Danny DeVito. And there is a scene where he asks Danny to ad-lib, Danny says to Rob "Look I'm old and I know what I think is funny. But you are young and know what is funny now. So tell me what to say." That doesn't take away from how great Danny is, it shows awareness and willingness to adapt, learn and meet the current moment. Those older democrats all won their elections and have held their seats. But if they don't want to participate in the now, the current time and work with what is important now, then it is time for them to go. Thanks for the article, it was a really good read!
I am a late boomer. Although I wise young people today would be (fill in the blank), I have the humility to recognize that it is their world, not mine, and they will have to live what they do or do not do, not me.
And, from where I sit I have to say it's well past time for us Boomers to get the fuck out of the way. I won't blame the generation, but if we mark their time from their first President (1992) to hopefully their last (2028) I really can't say that things have gone as well as we might have hoped.
Or at least that we are not handing Gen X, Millennials, and/or Zoomers anything to celebrate
Trump slapped a 39% tariff on Swiss watches. Supposedly to “bring back jobs,” but in reality it’s like burning your neighbor’s house to heat your own. Small American watchmakers who still need Swiss parts just got kneecapped, too.
And Senator Bill Cassidy? Acting shocked that RFK Jr. did exactly what RFK Jr. always does. That’s not surprise, Senator — that’s buying a piranha and being upset it ate your goldfish.
And is Lauren anti-Dems? I can't point to anything specific at the moment, but I've sensed some underlying *something* since she joined TB. Maybe it's my imagination.
Assuming we succeed in ousting the Trumpsters, I like the idea of establishing a ROTC-like college program, where students can follow a track of civil servant work, with loads of history and ethics classes. Doesn’t anyone else think that could work?
1949 here too. Our local organizers just use me for bouncing ideas around because I told them I can’t bear to lead any of these organizations anymore. I’m happy to pass on my thoughts, though.
I'm a Boomer and I've been pleading for years to get rid of Schumer and Jeffries, bring in fresh, younger Members/Senators and get down to the business of fighting the Trump regime--at every turn. No more sternly worded letters. Or capitulation on shutting down the government. This is a war for the soul of America and the old guard just isn't up to the task. They, their staff and consultants are part of the problem. The Dem bench is indeed deep, young, smart, authentic and articulate. They even know how to talk in real speak not like a term paper. One more thing: I think there ought to be term limits on the Congress. It has worked well here in California, no hegemonies, no entrenched power, just getting down to business because they have to if they want to get anything done. Maybe as part of the reform and rebuilding that will come, of necessity, after Trump et al. have left this mortal coil, we can look to our electeds as responsive, in touch and fighters on our behalf.
At 41, I sometimes consider running for Congress just to feel young. It’s crazy to me that we are talking about people in their 40s and 50s as being “young” but I guess it makes sense given the average age of our representatives.
I just don’t understand these old people. Haven’t they ever dreamed of retiring so they can travel the world, garden, spend time with their grandchildren, learn to paint…literally anything besides clinging to power until they drop dead? There is really nothing they’d rather be doing with their lives? How pathetic.
I can’t help but feel repulsed by the selfishness and arrogance of these elders. They seem to be under the impression that they are irreplaceable and don’t seem to care what happens to the rest of us once they are gone. Once they hit 55-60, they should have started mentoring the next generation so they could retire with dignity and respect for their own legacy. I thought after how Feinstein went down, they would have learned something.
In a Truth Social post, Trump appeared to order a new census to be undertaken now, as opposed to the next constitutionally scheduled one in 2030. This new one would violate the Constitution by only counting citizens and legal residents. It would then, it seems, try to reapportion Congress using the numbers produced by this unconstitutional Census in time for the 2026 and/or 2028 election. In other words, Trump would by executive fiat change how many representatives each state sends to Congress and each states electoral votes. That’s quite literally how you rig an election. So in this scenario California’s and New York’s delegations show up in 2027 and Trump’s people say, no, you don’t have X reps. You have X-4. Send these other folks home. There’s simply no way to accept a president unilaterally and unconstitutionally taking away a state’s representation in Congress and the Electoral College and continuing to accept the legitimate authority of the federal government. I know that’s a big statement. But there’s not.
The Constitution is crystal clear on two points. There’s a census once every decade. The count is of all persons in country, and their status is irrelevant. Obviously the Constitution is one thing and what this Supreme Court says is another. I wouldn’t be shocked to see this Supreme Court come up with a way around the crystal clear language and original intent on who is counted in the census. I’m more skeptical that they’ll accept a new one-off census. But they could. It’s a deeply corrupt institution. That’s your path to the dissolution of the union.
They'll claim that undocumented immigration went so vast in 2021-2024 that a recount is necessary to have accurate numbers. It's an emergency dont'cha know? The Trump Administration sees lots of emergencies that require drastic and possibly illegal activity.
White Male Boomer here...my generation on both sides of the aisle have destroyed the environment, created the largest inequality gap in history, put the Boomer's villiage idiot in the white house, and put democracy at risk...outside of that, the boomers get credit for making situtional ethics the norm, amorality a way of life...I'll stop there it is time for anyone over 60 to move out of the way and let the people with more life in front of them than behind them determine their own future

I’m a Boomer and couldn’t be more excited about getting Millennials and Gen X leaders in higher leadership roles. One of the Gen Z leaders that gives me the most hope is Maxwell Frost. Leaders like him is what gives me hope for Gen Z overall. They had a lot of hard knocks with COVID, and are now staring down a climate crisis, mental health crisis, and financial instability, but it’s facing big challenges that can accelerate emotional development and my money is on them.
I'm old...the ageism is ridiculous on here...I am still working and am just fine, thank you.
My issue is I don't agree with their ideology at all, and I find lots of them, even on here, lecturing people as if they are some kind of expert and know everything about everything...rude, insulting, and arrogant and hateful of anyone who doesn't think like them.
I don't like it in anyone of any age or ideology. I don't mind a few younger people who behave better than many online...but, not super young ( under 30 ) for the bigger jobs.
Why would I vote for people who act like this?
I don't think moderate Libs are evil, and it is what works for me.
Edit to add: The fact is, a very progressive politician can not win a presidential election, the country overall is more center or independent. You need more than one group to win. You can't just cater to one faction. That is how it works in the US.
I don't think they are describing anyone under 30 taking up the mantle. Anyone in their 20's, no matter how smart just doesn't have enough life experience to be doing that. They should be organizing, getting involved, and learning from whatever mentors they can so when they hit their 30'd they are ready.

Just in case you're unclear exactly how much the left LOATHES Cory Booker:

(IMHO: she was too nice).
It’s a stretch to say that is “the left”.
Who on “the left” loves him?
You’re moving the window. I argued that a capitalized LOATHES by the whole left was a huge reach based on the commentary of this one flamethrower.
Ok.
Who on the lowercase left lowercase loves him?
Totally agree; Dems brand is geriatric. Yet the unquestioned leader of the Republicans is a babbling 79 year old. Republicans always get a pass.
