When did I know the Bulwark was for me? After discovering the Bulwark last summer and before the November 24 election, I started listening more and more. I soon realised, with great relief, that I was not going completely crazy and my view of things was, not just valid, but shared by many. I then became a B+ member which was the best money I ever spent. I don't always agree with everything Tim, Sarah and JVL say, but I have learned that I completely trust them. So, from me, sincere thanks to all at the Bulwark...
The Bulwark videos started showing up on YouTube years ago and the more I watched, the more content the algorithms brought me. I was always learning from you guys, so I kept watching. I knew this was my community the first time I saw Sarah and JVL disagree. I was so accustomed to shows that either had everyone nodding yes during the entire show or people who disagreed by yelling at each other. To see two people who obviously care about and respect each other disagree vehemently and remain friends was when I knew you were my people. I will repeat what I said the other day. When Tim, JVL, and Sarah are all disagreeing and I find myself agreeing with all of you, I know I am learning from each of you. And that is why you are my favorite media.
Congratulations on reaching 100K paid subscribers. There is strength in number and we must keep this going! Really looking forward to Bill talking to Julie K. Brown tomorrow.
I still have subscriptions to NYT and WaPo. But while they’re good for straight news their opinion sections are rather anemic. I can’t remember how I found you.
But your opinion journalism hits the spot. I also like the comment sections. I often learn things from other commenters and the links they post.
The Atlantic has good opinion journalism but no comments.
News reports are hyping 1,300 people being fired at state because the supreme court said he could but what they said was as long as he followed existing law. If these are career civil servants he is "firing" then there are very strict rules how this has to be done. Is anybody looking at whether or not they are following the rules, just asking.
Immediately. Years ago. It was Jim first, then JVL. Then Sarah. I didn’t start the podcasts until recently, and NOW they feel just like good family. I trust them.
The Bulwark are my people because of the epistemic modesty built in to the entire enterprise. All the Bulwark staffers who are former Republicans had to admit they were wrong about the GOP when they left the party. I admire people willing to make such a concession when the personal price for doing so was as high as it was.
My wife and I are losing our Medicare Advantage plan because the insurance company is leaving the market. We're replacing it with traditional Medicare and a Plan G supplement, excellent coverage. Fortunately, we can afford the thousands of dollars in annual premiums.
The experience of exploring the jungle of supplements, advantage plans, and choices of insurers has strengthened my belief that instead of incremental reforms of Medicare and Medicaid, we need to replace the whole confusing and costly Frankenstein's Monster of public and private insurance. Our goal should be enhanced Medicare for All.
We need to stop talking about whether medical care is a right or a privilege, and arguing about who deserves to get it. A healthier population benefits everyone, not just the individual who receives care. Universal health care is justifiable on both humanitarian and economic grounds. And it's a safeguard against the increasing threat of epidemics because it makes early detection and containment more likely. That alone, if successful, would justify the cost.
For those of us on the west coast, would you please start sharing the time zone you refer to? For instance, Bill’s show on Sunday is often shown as 10am. But that’s 7am for us😎. Maybe I’m just too lazy to translate it in my head…
Kathy I dropped the ball there. All of the times are Eastern and we usually say it but I didn't in this instance. But it is also true that we would never use another time zone because that would be catastrophically confusing.
Trump and the Republicans real solution to medical care for poor sick people: just die already. My solution is to tax people who earn over 50% on annual income over 3 million dollars. They you to tax excessive wealth at much higher rates so the country wouldn't have Thiel's, Bezos and Musk's who could buy elections.
I'd been listening to The Bulwark podcast almost since its inception, I think. I found it by listening to Pod Save America, interestingly. The Bulwark had one of its first live events in Hollywood in late 2021 or early 2022, I think. My husband and I attended and really enjoyed speaking with fellow attendees, sharing our stories of our varied political pasts and how we came to The Bulwark. That event made me a Bulwarker for life. Thanks for all you do: you know you keep us sane!!
I don't argue that medicaid needs to get overhauled, what I don't understand is how the US cannot give basic medical care to their citizens for a reasonable cost to the people. I lived in Europe and people did not worry that couldn't afford doctor bills. My former sister in law had a normal birth, stayed in the hospital around 5 days. Beautiful clean room and good care. Her grandmother was ill and stayed in the hospital over a week. In contrast my daughter who has expensive private health ins. just had a baby. 24 hour labor! and 1 day recovery. She wanted to stay an extra due to pain and weakness, and the insurance said no. A man I knew had a heart attack and stayed only 4 days. Also with expensive ins. How is this not the real issue? And I have quite few actual horror stories of people bleeding internally, underlying conditions, etc. but released from the hospital by the insurance company.
Medicaid is being cut 10% basically but even critics say only 3% of recipients are considered "able bodied" adults not working for whatever reason. Many of these people are sick themselves, unable to work regularly but not receiving disability, it can take a long time to obtain that, people in these populations often have gaps in employment, from one job or season to another, often times there are complex "care giving" to various people young and old for various reasons. I know blue collar guys that are early sixties and not physically able to work in their job anymore and they're desperately trying to make it to 65 so they're eligible for Medicare. 25% of Americans make less than $28,000 a year, overall we still have 11% uninsured who work full time. That's a lot higher in "Trump Country." Americans just have no idea how many people live in serious poverty and how difficult that makes life for these folks who are neighbors and community members in urban and rural America
Republican politicians are saying with a straight face that all the freeloaders getting medicaid and food stamps will get sent out into the fields and onto the roofing jobs and replace the Immigrant labor being deported. It just goes to show how smart it was to capture the "poorly educated" voting public
Yeah, can’t wait to see Grandma who is in a Medicaid nursing home bed (because the Walmart job she had for 40 years didn’t let her amass enough savings to come up with $10K+ a month for years of private-pay care) showing her roofing work chops on a hot summer day.

As soon as I saw all the old Weekly Standard guys where at The Bulwark. Plus, Slack Tide (Matt Labash) as soon as that was up.

WaPo and NYT, I believe, were bought by right wing millionaires who want to read what they believe.

$10K/month is a lower priced one! See the NYT series “Dying Broke.”
All too true.
