If you live in a red state start calling your representatives about this shameful ploy by Republicans to hide the truth. Keep calling. Some representative is going to change their mind when it hits home that they will loose their job soon.
"In response to a viral tweet of the NBC News story, a DHS spokesperson said Petrova was entering the country with petri dishes and embryonic frog cells without proper permits."
This is what scares the you know what out of me. Here's the scenario: Your wife or sister or daughter -- born in America -- is out of the country and is (ahem) detained coming back in. They take her passport. Then the story is told that she was unable to prove that she is an American (citizen) and so has been detained for an indeterminate amount of time.
Due process? Ha. It doesn't exist any more...except for criminals like the Orange Jesus.
And they’re shipping many of the people seize they out of state, often to conservative states in the south. They think the judges are more sympathetic to Trump there.
the message needs to go out loud and clear-this is not about protecting criminals, its about people being gien due process to determine if they have committed a crime. In America, you are innocent till proven guilty- this applied to Charles Manson, Geoffrey Dahmer, sirhan sirhan. If that bothers you , perhaps you should move to Russia!
Democrats should continue to reject the false choice of caring about due process and caring about economic damage -- they both stem from the same thing: Donald Trump's desire to be a king. In fact, most of the issues facing America because of this administration's actions boil down to that desire. If Democrats hammer on all the issues AND connect the dots, people will enter the conversation from the angle that matters the most to them. ALL these issues matter to all of us in the long run, but communicating that they are all about an authoritarian power grab helps people see the larger threat AND focus on the issue that feels important to them. Focus is crucial during this period of chaos and throwing everything against the wall. Even the grift/corruption and the bumbling incompetence are part of the desire to be king: all the money should come to ME, and who cares if I'm stupid and lazy? I'm the king . . . !
Part of opposition to a despot is actually showing action in opposition to that person and his administration. At least a few Demopublicans are beginning to realize what the state of play actually is and what it demands. Their constituents seem to be far ahead of the Demopublican leadership so it seems to be time for the leaders to follow direction from the led.
The brilliant Demopublican strategy of too little and too late has failed - own it, revise it to meet the actual challenges ahead and adapt as necessary to defend our democracy. Too little and too late will not cut it IMHO. The fact that there is no action in opposition inside the Republicrat clown car does not bode well for the future so it may already be too late, the cost of action has certainly risen over the last few months.
Upon hearing of this incident, I am reminded of a verbal exchange between a Jewess being marched into a boxcar headed to Auschwitz. She asked the guard, “Are you going to kill us?” To which the guard answered, “Madam, do you think we are barbarians?”
At the root of this particular evil is the outlaw behavior of the DHS ‘government’ actors who staged this escapade.
Grabbing 278 people off the street, and shipping them out of country without due process is only part of this performative folly. Turning them over to a self-described dictator for incarceration in a gulag-type prison in exchange for $6 million, is another.
All 278 people should be returned, and given due process. If found guilty, punish and/or deport each one lawfully.
There’s nothing Christian nor American about any of this. It is the work of barbarians.
I would take a cue from Steve Bannon and "flood the zone," i.e., take some of the DNC advertising budget and send as many Democratic members of Congress and the Senate as possible as often as possible to El Salvador and provide plenty of photo ops (minus $50k Rolexes). Embarrass the hell out of Trump, Rubio, Johnson, etc. Make some GD noise!!! At the very least we can all be a tad less ashamed of our current regime, and who knows what else might be accomplished.
This. Attention MUST stay on these people because Trump wants them to be ignored. Even more importantly, because when the attention dissipates, people are going to start being "found dead" in custody. Ending this illegal activity is more important than any question of constituent services, and even more important than the debate on immigration policy, important as that debate is.
I'm so happy members of Congress want to check on Andry Hernandez Romero!! I never even knew his name until reading this post, but I've worried about him since the whole El Salvador crisis happened. A 19-year-old gay hairdresser/makeup artist sent to that hellhole! What the heck do we think is happening to him there?! A good looking, slight young man who is practically still a child, dropped into a living hell!!
Thank Goodness members of Congress are remembering him, as well as Abrego Garcia. I know other very young men have been mentioned as having been taken off the streets and sent to that awful prison; justice for each of them, through due process, must be pursued by all of us who value and miss the Spirit of the America that we lived until recently and is now being abruptly and cruelly taken from us and our Country....
We need to stop calling these rendititions deportations. A deportation occurs when an individual who is here without legal permission is returned TO THEIR HOME COUNTRY and released into the community. When they are sent to a third country, to which they have no connection, to serve an indeterminate sentence in a torture prison without a preceding conviction, that is not a deportation.
Letting Trump call these "deportations" is both a lie, and a way to hide their lawlessness and terrorizing of individuals who remain innocent until proven guilty.
I'm a former prosecutor. I am not a fan of gang members, violent criminals, sex traffickers or abusers. I spent almost 3 decades prosecuting them (noting that the vast majority of the individuals I prosecuted for these crimes were American citizens). I am not afraid of the burden of proof or the constitutional protections and was fully capable of doing my job to protect the community within the parameters laid down by the founding fathers.
If the Trumpists can't do their jobs without becoming wholly lawless, it is because they are incompetent, not because the law doesn't work.
Not just MAGAs. Too many Democrats, liberals, mainline conservatives (to the extent that they continue to exist) and progressives also don't seem to understand this.
You really believe that he wants the story to die? If he did, it would be over.
I’d read that Petrova was targeted as a Russian dissident, if true then it would seem that tfg’s minions were following their orders from Putin.
Such a great job reporting. Really enjoying this conversation! Keep up the amazing work.
" Petrova was entering the country with petri dishes and embryonic frog cells without proper permits."
Whoopdeedoo!! Are they arresting all the people that the USDA dogs catch with fresh fruit, cheese and meat in their bags?
There is no evidence that Garci is a MS-13 gang member.
If they have proof, they need to present it in a court of law and give him an opportunity to respond.

Yes there’s a huge difference between deportation and what Trump is doing. Too many MAGAs don’t seem to understand this.

OK. It’s definitely a problem.
