No matter how the case turns out, kudos and applause to Jack Smith and his team for doing the right thing and seeing this necessary process through. I sincerely hope he is successful enough that his image one day will appear on a piece of American currency, as the patriot who perhaps saved democracy for future generations. History has a habit of choosing the right person to emerge at the right moment. Quite possibly this is his time and his role to play, when we need him the most.

And don't forget the countless Americans who are standing up in big and small ways to support America against people who would tear us apart.

I'm not a Republican, but I can't help but put in a word for all of the Republicans who told Trump he was FOS--the lynch pin of the case; and for the Republican state officials who just said no.

I am with you Tom. Seeing how GOPers who speak out get knocked down or kicked out, there is something to be said for any that draw the line publically. I have good feelings for Mike Pence on Jan 6, even if his primary driver was not to be on the hook for something illegal. These things matter.

“I’m not getting in that car.” Not exactly poetry but they may well recognized as the words on which hung the fate of the Republic. If Pence had left, who knows what could or would have happened to him. He would be completely in the hands of Trump’s henchmen. His life might have been on the line. The ability to turn back to established legal order would have been removed. It would have left Trump in charge of the moment. Trump could have used Pence’s absence to declare martial law or any number of moves towards autocracy, justified as the only alternative to chaos. Instead Pence remained in the building where just a few hours later with the Capital building back under control, he verified the Electoral College’s vote for Joe Biden and Trump’s unique moment to seize power was gone. After that, all of Trump’s moves were a futile scramble of desperation. Trump lost the momentum of the moment and his ability to shape events the instant Pence refused to get into the car that was so conveniently waiting to remove him from the history of that day.

To take a quote totally out of context "I don't need a ride" (Ukrainian President Zelenskyy)

I can’t see Pence adding the Zelenskyy punchline - “Send ammunition.” I don’t think Pence has a sense of humour or even irony. Especially not parody. We’ll never know if he knew that fly was sitting on his head. He’s a closed book, that one.

It's about cults versus rationality. It's about human nature. It is about tribalism. It is about logical fallacies, lack of critical thinking acumen, and cognitive dissonance. And mostly, it is about capitalism, and the cruelty and fraud that are built-in features.

You can keep democracy as long as you're willing to fight and die for it.

Tom, how many of them - like Kemp and Doucey said they'd vote for Trump if he was the nominee?

It is about democracy. And voting for someone you know tried to overthrow the government because he plays for your team is undemocratic.

I must second what Matt says. I was just now debating in myself whether to simply skip over Secular's comments or say something. Thank you, Matt.

I would certainly be interested in seeing Jack Smith as Attorney General and/or SCOTUS justice some day in the future. He doesn't strike me as a politician, so an appointed office such as these would be the ones I'd expect him most likely to accept. If so, he will have earned it.
