I like the word "fashy" in the first sentence of the section "Rot at the Top." It's doing a LOT of work. It is an insulting diminutive of "fascist" but also might be a sort of portmanteau as an insulting diminutive of "fashionable" as well. (Or vice versa for that matter.)

Both are appropriate for the vile Richard Fuentes, who is both fashionable on the political right, but also, well, a fascist.

The “vile ideas of the left” is the Trump era’s more blunt phrasing of their 9-year-old excuse for electing someone they know to be very bad. These are the same people who fell for the “Flight 93 election” argument in 2016. They didn’t have a case, then, either.

Does this statement make sense to anyone?

When we disagree with a person’s thoughts and opinions, we challenge those ideas in debate. And we have seen success in this approach as we continue to dismantle the vile ideas of the left.”

I guess what it really means is:

When we disagree with a person’s thoughts and opinions, we challenge those ideas in debate as long as said person is a member of the left and not an extreme right.

After watching the Netflix movie "A House of Dynamite" and recently re-watched "Fail Safe" and then imagining Trump in either scenario I have reached a pinnacle of nausea, fear and loathing. And doom. Did I mention doom?

That Trump has called for the elimination of the filibuster which he called for during his first term is not surprising. Now that he has addressed the issue in ALL CAPS Republicans in the senate may need to reconsider resisting his demand. It will be interesting to see if Trump follows up with pressure and if Senate Republicans acquiesce.

The deployment of the term "professional conservatism" made me think about what make a person a "professional conservative."

Then I flashed back to Andy Warhol making a distinction between "professional homosexuals" and ordinary Gay men. Then I remembered Erik Prince and his "professional soldiers" or mercenaries.

Finally my mind settled into conservatives engaged in the world's oldest profession.

We watched “A House of Dynamite” the night before Halloween. It scared the hell out of me because all I could think of was “the Trump administration is totally incompetent and incapable of dealing with that scenario”. At this point, I don’t think there’s a single person in this WH who is actually capable of making any of the decisions that must be made as shown in that movie. Maybe Rubio, maybe Dan Caine. Maybe. We need to get rid of ALL of them.

I wonder who the person is that carries the “football” around. Personally, I didn’t trust the guy in the movie, especially when his suggestion to the President was to do Choice #3, “well done”. My H thought the choice “do nothing and see if it even explodes” was the correct one (the Gabriel Basso character advanced that choice). In any event, our lives may now depend on what the football person tells Trump.

I think the point of the film was that no one is competent enough to manage the nuclear threat. Obviously we know Trump & Co. isn't up to it. This alone should make us scared S***less.

The existential questions and costs it raises are such that NO ONE is able to act and not be turned into a death dealing monster. It is just insane to give any human that power.

What it awakened in me is the intuitive reality that for decades our government has been feeding us a line of BS from "Duck and Cover" and building nuclear bomb shelters in our houses, to the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction making us safer. Truly the only options a government has is surrender or suicide.

Here’s an idea: let’s make Trump a king in the British tradition! — that is, a tabloid celebrity with no power! An ultra-wealthy playboy that has no impact on anything that affects the lives of the commoners.

And then we can go back to electing presidents who are not necessarily repugnant, dishonorable ignoramuses.

We can even let him wear a crown and pass on his useless title to his eldest male larva!

Why does Mr. Eggers give Republicans who he says do not support the positions of Fuentes a pass for not speaking out against him? It’s easy to take a stand that’s popular. The challenge is standing up for what you believe when it is not popular or when you stand to lose something. Fair weather morality is no morality at all.

Many people in today’s institutional Republican spaces don’t agree with the hate-

drenched views espoused by the likes of Fuentes.

I am not so sure. Your statement doesn't pass the smell test. I get a feeling most of the elected Republicans are closet racists if not open....

"...as we continue to dismantle the vile ideas of the left.”

Those "VILE" ideas of the left include making sure children don't go hungry, giving health care to all people without them having to go bankrupt, ensuring everyone has equal access to education, allowing workers to join unions to be able to fight for fair wages and safe working environments, and regulate businesses so they don't spew toxic chemicals into our water and air.

How VILE we are!!

Thanks for the embedded link to the BBC article about Prince Andrew becoming Andrew Mountbatten Windsor by orders of King Charles. Apropos of nothing, I was wondering how this could take place so suddenly, when it’s been the story ever since Harry and Meghan left the UK that neither the Queen nor (now) Charles could remove Duke/Duchess or Prince/Princess, but rather that required an act of Parliament. According to the BBC article:

“To remove the titles, the King will send Royal warrants to the Lord Chancellor - who is David Lammy - to officially remove them.”

If that’s all it takes, then I hope one day soon, Charles takes Duke and Duchess away from Harry and Meghan, and especially Meghan. There’s rumors all over the British press that they’re getting divorced because Harry wants to move back to England and the Duchess of Montecito does not. I’d bet money that if Charles doesn’t do it, William will when he ascends the throne.

So it’s not the usual Bulwark fare, but it’s my personal gripe, and now I know it actually “can” be done. Thank you.
