Let’s be real, Trump will not be removed from office. 2/3rd’s of the Senate will not convict. In 2028, one can’t run on anti-Trump. One can proudly claim to be a capitalist when you don’t have to worry about housing, food, healthcare, etc. However, a good portion of the population will be receptive to a better society. Personally, I think the French Revolution treated their elites in an appropriate fashion.

This article is easy too dismissive of Nixon chances of winning. It doesn't make sense to the dinosaur brains of old donkey strategists, but this is 2026 and the progressive/DSA branch of the Democratic party just might have a message that will be more appealing to the biggest segments of potential voters: the group that have been not voting.

Does it not make sense or do they just want it not to happen? 🤔

I hope to hell my beloved Democratic Party forgoes another impeachment circus should they take the House. It means NOTHING to the vast majority of voters screwed over by Trump and is of course, utterly hopeless

The purpose of government is to do for all the people what they can't do for themselves. There's the bit about "promote the general welfare." Remember? Examples are health care, education, food and drug regulation, roads, protection, and a lot more that we aren't getting in a satisfactory manner. At the moment, the Democratic Socialists are the only ones who seem at all interested in providing the benefits that government should provide and corporate America has no intention of making available.

*So when Lt. Col. Alex Vindman—a former national security official who was a top witness in President Trump’s first impeachment—jumped into the Florida primary race, there was hope among Dem officials that he could help build a party brand more palatable to red-leaning voters across the state.*

Sigh. And this is what's wrong with Dem officials and their consultants; the total inability to read the room.

Why would *red-leaning* voters be interested in voting for a man that was an enemy of their cult leader? Newsflash: these red-leaning voters are not crossing the aisle to vote for Democrats no matter how disappointed they may be with current events.

Spend more time reaching out to your own voters, many of whom quit voting out of apathy or time/work constraints. Help them help you because Republican voters aren't coming over to help no matter what the lobbyists say.

12 Bones is classic Asheville bbq. It’s not fancy; just delicious food with real people enjoying it. I am from NY but each time I have been there the folks around us are friendly and love to talk

Please ask what do the voters of NC want to hear from the Democratic Party. They don’t want to hear the word SOCIALIST and the Dems need to realize that NC is not NYC and Asheville doesn’t represent all of the state. It is a blue dot in a large Republican ocean.

To do an autopsy on why Nixon won and Vindman lost is really a waste of time as neither stands a chance to replace Moody in this election cycles. I am no fan of Nixon but she is a serious candidate and Vindman is not. He is a creation of the antisocial media and MSNow talking heads who became a celebrity during the impeachment trial. His 15 minutes of fame has passed. Nixon has on the ground credibility as a practicing and experienced politician. Her tendency to be a political attack dog may not get her elected but it is worth having someone actually "bring it" to the Republicans.

Also not all "DSA adjacent" candidates are unelectable because they have other political gifts that may help market them to a broader array of voters than we might think. El-Sayed and Mamdani remind me more of Obama and Buttigieg than many DSA identified candidates who sound just a bit too zealous and have both a humor and a humility deficit.

I don't understand this coverage at all.

Aren't Florida primaries closed?

Obviously, if the Dem "leadership" wanted the voters to pick a candidate more appealing to MAGA-leaning voters, they'd have to make that very clear and work to drive turnout.

But less than a quarter of the registered Dems there turned out for the primary.

I feel like some very important elements to the story are missing here.

Why was MAGA party turnout so much higher than Dem turnout? And did Vindman's primary campaign focus on his electability in "red state" Florida?

Nixon will be in television ads with Abdul El-Sayed as part of the GOP scare tactic strategy to get out the vote. Work hard Nixon supporters.because you are going to be overwhelmed, especially in rural Florida counties

Allow me to take you to reality, however irrationally controversial it is to acknowledge that reality. Where the Blue Dogs have not a third of the House seats they averaged in the 1990's and 2000's. And Abdul El-Sayed is polling as well or better against the Republican in the Michigan Senate race as Haley Stevens did before pollsters stopped polling that alternative race. Oh, and in which the two worst-performing presidential nominees in recent history, John McCain and Mitt Romney, just happen to have been the only Republicans to not fully embrace the right.

The reality is that moderates have been terrible at winning elections over the past quarter-century. And although we can never expect their advocates to admit this, I think that has everything to do with why the Dems have had such a wild primary phase and why such challenges have long since changed the Republican Party.

On top of the word "socialist" being poison in ways Anglos don't fully understand when it comes to Hispanics:

1) Joan Duran Guerrero (the guy killed by ICE in Maine) was a Colombian who voted for Abelardo de la Espriella, the newly elected far-right president of Colombia, who:

2) Nominated Omar Bula, a guy identified by Politico in a 2020 story as someone swamping the state with conspiracy theories, as his foreign minister. When Joan was killed, they did not say a word, even though his VP was touring the US to meet Lil Marco and co. And in the time he's been in office, they recognized the Golan Heights as being part of Israel, and that’s just the beginning of their“cultural war” agenda.

3) De la Espriella lived in South Florida for about 10 years purposefully to become a US citizen. His family and businesses contribute to the GOP and to Anna Paulina Luna's election campaign. He is also an Italian citizen (by descent) who happens to mingle with Meloni and her circle.

4) Bernie Moreno’s brother used to be the US ambassador for a conservative president of Colombia. He was also the president of the Inter American Development Bank, and has like many conservative people in that area of the world become “sensitive” to the far-right policies and outlooks that have been emerging in the past 20 years.

5) There is a whole media ecosystem based in Florida that has been translating and adapting all of the craziness happening in the US for Latin American audiences. For example, the gun rights movement has become much stronger in Brazil, and the whole admixture of Christian churches marching hand in hand with far-right leaders is taking hold.

6) The people leading that movement are based in FL. People like Emmanuel Rincón (Venezuela) and María Herrera Mellado (Spain) are based in Miami. They have links to the GOP, they have access to American resources, and they use that to poison the well in Spanish, both for US electoral purposes and for their own countries of origin. And they have been instrumental in creating the “Iberosfera”, a movement that federates far-right activists from all over the Americas ( Including the Bolsonaros, Milei, Giorgia Meloni, the VOX people, Bukele/Bukkake, etc.)

7) Also, the fascist renaissance happening in the Anglo world is also happening in Spanish-speaking spaces. People are not so blasé anymore about supporting Franco, Pinochet, or the dictatorships of the Southern Cone. The argument is that they did not go far enough, and that there are still too many "zurdos" (meaning leftists, though literally "left-handed" with an undertone of sinister people), "comunistas," and "ateos" because they did not go far enough in cleansing the region of them.

All this to say that this story is not only about democrats doing dumb Anglo shit like praising Fidel. This also about a large and significant pool of Hispanic voters being actively radicalized both in Spanish and in English, on top of already having a soft spot for fascism.

And all of that is happening while the anglos can’t seem to take navel-gazing because socialism or something… Like JVL would say, Good Luck America.

How depressing! I can't understand how Chile and Columbia went so far right after what they suffered at the hands of the right wing.

ngrovotny's avatar

Everything you mention sounds like it should have resulted in a Vindman victory in the primary, though. That's the opposite of what happened.

Turnout looks very low on the Dem side. Maybe the ICE squads are already producing results for the MAGA party?

I don’t know anything about Angie Nixon except what I read and saw today. But it’s obvious that Florida Democratic voters wanted a hardworking genuine Floridian as their candidate and that makes sense to me. I wish we could put the labels aside and just judge Nixon on her candidacy. Maybe the Florida voters aren’t ready to do that and she will lose because she labeled herself a DSA candidate. But just maybe they will listen to someone who is talking about the problems they are having. I sincerely hope that happens. But quite honestly I never thought the Florida that has DeSantis as a Governor is actually in play for any Democrat, whether DSA or not. So maybe we are better off not throwing our money & energy there.

Puleeesse! Just sit back and watch Florida elect Jolly and Nixon. Florida is done with MAGA and corruption!! We’ve had it. DONE!
