@carrasquillo, thank you for writing this story. This incident and the shooting of 26-year-old Johan Sebastián Guerrero in Maine this week break my heart. Where's the outrage and national outcry for justice? I hear that ICE/CBP agents need to held accountable. I couldn't agree more. At the same time, the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good seem to have faded from memory.
Today (July 15) I listened to Jenn Budd, author of “Against the Wall: My journey from Border Patrol agent to immigrant rights activist” & “ICE: What everyone needs to know.” She discussed her experience and thoughts on what's happening now: https://thelefthook.substack.com/p/abolish-ice.
Apparently, ICE and CBP have been murdering people for decades and NO ONE has been held accountable. I'm horrified and sickened.
One of the local news stations had some video of Mr. Araujo’s van making a U-turn away from the ICE vehicle—so the government’s story is indeed unraveling before our eyes—again.
Our tax dollars are paying for the murder of our people and the cover up of the practices making civil rights violations more likely. This is not what the Declaration or the Constitution promise us.
I am disgusted by what happened to this poor man! I pray for his family and justice. Thank you to all of you at the Bulwark for continuing to report on and fight against the illegal acts of this government!
". . . ICE remains an undertrained, overly aggressive organization." I think the more accurate statement would be: ICE actively recruits racist, murderous thugs who can't wait to obtain legal permission to hunt down and kill brown people.
Conservative Americans have supported police brutality and abuse of power forfuckingever. These people are the reason that we've been militarizing police forces and focusing on hiring aggressive, violent people as cops and ICE agents. Conservatives are terrified of everything and thus demand a harsh world in which authorities are provided the tools to kill threats, even when the threat is a normal human being who is not a citizen because conservatives do not trust "others", those who are not members of their group.
Liberals had better wake up and start fighting conservatives at every opportunity. Conservatives are the internal enemy, treat them that way. The agents involved must be prosecuted and then thrown in solitary confinement with no chance for parole or pardon.
That's an American misnomer. They're liberals, more toward the libertarian end of the spectrum. By "conservative" they mean that they want "small government" that is definetly libertarian. Progressive liberals generally want a bit more government to actively promote the general welfare.
No such thing as a "bit more government." I first voted for president in 1972 and was active in the 1968 election campaign. I've learned to keep my hand in my wallet pocket when I hear that "progressive liberals" are around.
Sure there is. "A bit more government" is regulation that is required because the market creates problems, it NEVER solves them. Libertarians believe the lie of "market forces", which is greed and selfishness as in Ayn Rand's "selfishness is a virtue".
As a progressive, I see government more as the founders did as expressed in the Declaration of Independence "that to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed".
So, I demand that government act for the general welfare because "the market" acts only in the interest of the individual acting selfishly, externalizing all costs on to others. Also, as wealth never trickles down, we need the high upper marginal tax rates brought back to end the skim by the wealthy that was enabled by GOP tax cuts since Reagan.
I came up with two political definitions many years ago.
Progressives: nice, well-meaning, people who create interesting ways to spend other people's money.
Far right conservatives: excuse me while I tell you what your personal religious beliefs will be (no abortion, no birth control, no sex ed in schools, America founded as a Christian nation primarily for white people, etc).
My state has a flat tax rate about 4.3%. Progressives hate it because they can't spend more money on their "causes." I give a lot of money to charities each year that I get to select because I have money to spend. If our state goes to a graduated income tax, then politicians, not me, will decide where my charitable dollars go.
Understand this, wealth NEVER trickles down, it aggregates unless controlled by taxation. This is an objective fact proven by EVERY civilization that ever existed. It was the income tax with its high upper marginal rates that created our inclusive and expansive middle class because it reduced the taking of workers' earnings by the wealthy. And is was and is the GOP's tax cuts for the rich that has been eroding it since Reagan.
The income tax is a progressive idea, taxing unearned wealth helps working class people take care of themselves and thus reduces the need for social programs to help people who cannot. Libertarian nonsense, such as "tax is theft" erodes the middle class and thus ensures that more government spending is necessary to help those who no longer can help themselves because the rich were allowed to take their earnings.

What have we become? [in tears]
If they are operating so differently from the Noem days, why stick with her bullshit “weaponizing the vehicle” lie?
I hope there is a version of Nuremberg one day where the US is on trial.
Thank you for writing this.
What an absolute travesty and a huge loss.
So heartbroken, sad and angry.

Lorenzo was the American Dream. The tragedy is beyond belief.
Why do we continue to allow ICE get away with things like this?
It was murder. ICE and DHS lie routinely to cover their illegal, incompetent and too frequently lethal practices.
". . . ICE remains an undertrained, overly aggressive organization." I think the more accurate statement would be: ICE actively recruits racist, murderous thugs who can't wait to obtain legal permission to hunt down and kill brown people.
Thank you for helping tell the story of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and his family to the rest of us.
They cannot take away the fact that he led an honorable life and left a rich legacy.
Collectively we have to ensure that truth, and accountability eventually follow this injustice.
Lorenzo’ death is a tragedy. That his killers will get away with it is beyond infuriating.

Not all conservatives. You happen to be posting on a website started by Never Trump conservative Republicans.
