I took the comment as "convicting Trump will be bad for Republican election results". And that Pence is so much in the tank for "Team Republican" that winning election results is more important than the rule of law in this case.
This idea that presidents or candidates who committed crimes should not be prosecuted is nuts. Governors have been convicted and sent to prison (see Rod Blagojevich), and other countries including France and S. Korea have prosecuted and imprisoned former leaders (see https://www.france24.com/en/france/20230401-amid-trump-indictment-a-look-back-at-france-s-history-of-prosecuting-ex-leaders). And Boris Johnson might get prosecuted for COVID lockdown violations, which people have not complained about.
Pretty sure that Mike Pence would not have wanted a Democrat from being immune from prosecution in similar circumstances.
Heck, certain countries have even executed kings, presidents, lords, etc. On one hand, he damns criminal leaders. On the other, he votes for them. Mother needs to get him on a few meds, or maybe stop feeding him any?
Pence is so forgiving a Christian, I'm sure he was very much a spiritual comforter to Rod Blagojevich and a voice for mercy that was not without effect in rescuing said miscreant from durance vile.... even though Blagojevich was, ostensibly, a Democrat.
If running for president is an automatic get-out-of-jail card, we can expect to see a lot of nervous felons filing for office. Which makes me curious what the governor of North Dakota has been up to . . .
BoJoтАЩs parties have certainly been complained about in the UK, which had far more stringent lockdowns than anything in the US. Imagine being in NY and unable to travel -- by law -- to Florida to stand outside your dying motherтАЩs window to say goodbye. All the while Boris was having multiple birthday parties at No. 10, complete with wine & cake.
Yep, which was my point -- MAGA GOP is essentially a reactive experience, based on talking points rather than actual ideology or consistency of purpose. But you know that.
ThatтАЩs an astute observation, that MAGA is a reactive experience. ThereтАЩs a lot of analysis encapsulated in that paradigm. Not least is that they donтАЩt have any intention of building anything creative of value; they just react in a maniacal way. Hysterically positive to Trump, regardless of right/wrong, and hysterically negative to anything not Trumpy. What a blighted existence.
Fully agree. It takes only a moment of objective analysis to recognize that MAGA's "appeal" lies in tearing things down rather than building something up, that their glass is perpetually half-empty as they seek to convince us that their approach is the pathway to prosperty and success, as if expecting the laws of gravity to work in reverse. Yet tens of millions of people choose to look past that simply in the name of owning the libs at all costs. Just ... wow.
Tearing down is a form of unearned glory. ItтАЩs so easy, compared to creating.
I think thatтАЩs part of the destructive mass psychology unleashed by social media; a whole genre of unaccomplished people found a source of camaraderie that reinforced a false self perception of importance. ThatтАЩs MAGA.
When it was going on I researched (OK, I googled it) and found out that under George W. multiple embassies were attacked and people killed, and not widely reported. Apparently, shooting at the US embassy is a thing in 3rd world nations.
Yup. When righties mock the idea that the Obama administration thought it was a political protest that got violent, they conveniently omit mentioning that there were several dozen protests at our diplomatic facilities going on all over the world, many of which became violent, several of which saw more people killed than Benghazi. It took most of a week for them to acquire enough information realize that Benghazi in particular was different from the rest for more reasons than тАЬan ambassador was killed.тАЭ
ThatтАЩs interesting. I knew they were like a dog with a moldy bone, but I hadnтАЩt dig deep like you did. Thank you.
As for тАЬGooglingтАЭ, I used to say IтАЩd тАЬdone my own researchтАЭ but thatтАЩs now an anti-vax confession of stupidity, so IтАЩve revised it to тАЬIтАЩve been reading . . .тАЭ Subtle, but it had to be done.
I have trained my eye to focus on the source, as IтАЩm scrolling.
But it is funny to observe how an overused phrase, like тАЬdone my own researchтАЭ, especially uttered by clueless people, takes on its own aura of disrepute.
Pence is straddling the issue of Trump so determinedly, IтАЩm surprised heтАЩs still in one piece. ThatтАЩs epic level failure to take a stand. Give me Chris Christie any day; even with his glaring flaws.
Pence is a classic case of trying so hard not to alienate any Republican voters that he winds up pleasing virtually none of them. The more he talks, the more I respect Harry Truman.
The word "splinched" from Harry Potter seems tailor-made for Mike Pence. "Splinching is what occurs when a witch or wizard Apparates or Disapparates unsuccessfully, leaving part of his or her clothes or body behind in their former location."
Fiction really does help us process reality that seems unreal. And it adds a hint of reassurance that itтАЩs all familiar, because authors throughout history are writing from experience. IтАЩm frequently amazed at how modern events fit tidily into ancient fables and mythology.
Exactly. Pence is such a sanctimonious, spineless hypocrite. I live in Jersey and IтАЩm no fan of Chris Christie, but at least heтАЩs telling it like it is about Trump and his suck up to the Saudis daughter and son in law.
The current outrage over the PGA selling out to the SaudiтАЩs LIV, is shining a harsh light onto the whole Trump familyтАЩs fawning over Saudi money. That feels like a silver lining.
The contrast between Christie and Pence in the past 24 hours is stark. Neither an ideal president, but Pence is showing Olympic levels of logical contortion to justify his inexcusable positions on Trump.
You are being very hard on Pence. He's in a really tough spot.
On the one hand it seems Pence is under intense pressure from God to run for President.
Yet at the same time God also wanted Donald Trump to be President before (the 2016 election being an indisputable divine miracle) and just as clearly wants Donald Trump to be the overwhelming favorite now; and God also has moved the hearts of his chosen people to love and obey Trump. And Mike Pence is, he fervently hopes, also of God's flock, so he too should -- it seems -- be one with them toward a man who God has singled out for divine favor.
God tends to be very confusing sometimes in telling us the plan and God can be very very angry and disappointed with someone who tries to ask too many questions and outthink how it all makes sense. The only thing a true Christian can do is whatever it is that is being asked of him, and hope it turns out to be what the big Guy wanted. Because if it doesn't, it's not necessarily going to get you off to plead that none of it made any sense.
As God points out (Job 40:2), "Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it." And so Pence, Joblike, can only answer: "Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further."
And even if you think Chris Christie isn't a person of conviction when it comes to Trump, he's certainly better at playing one on TV compared to the competition.
Well I canтАЩt really blame him for not wanting to be killed by members of his own party or have his family put in harmтАЩs way. But then why run for president?!? I think the universe Pence occupies must operate differently from the universe the rest of us live in. From here, his entire campaign makes absolutely no sense.

If you follow the adage that the history of the United States before 1776 was the history of England, then we have a record of executing kings, too.
True. In fact, if memory serves me, nearly every European country has executed at least one king/queen.
Pence is so forgiving a Christian, I'm sure he was very much a spiritual comforter to Rod Blagojevich and a voice for mercy that was not without effect in rescuing said miscreant from durance vile.... even though Blagojevich was, ostensibly, a Democrat.

"Benghazi! Benghazi! Benghazi!"
(aside, to friends, "What's this Benghazi thing we're hollering about?")
That is pretty funny; I bet you couldnтАЩt find one Republican voter out of ten who could tell you what Benghazi was about, or where it is on the map.
I think most of them would be more comfortable if Ben ghaz'd a her.
Okay, I'll show myself out.

Yes and about 10 times as many of our people were killed that way under Bush and darth v.
Yup. When righties mock the idea that the Obama administration thought it was a political protest that got violent, they conveniently omit mentioning that there were several dozen protests at our diplomatic facilities going on all over the world, many of which became violent, several of which saw more people killed than Benghazi. It seems like a failure of the news media. I donтАЩt recall much counter-reporting at the time.

Gymnastics of the soul. He at least gets a silver.

Beautiful.
So be It.
ChristieтАЩs purpose seems clear and needed; the truth teller taking on the elephant in the room. PenceтАЩs motivation is confounding.
And even if you think Chris Christie isn't a person of conviction when it comes to Trump, he's certainly better at playing one on TV compared to the competition.
And ChristieтАЩs attacks on Trump are substantive, not just flinging insults the way Trump does.
A crazy supporter think, тАЬ Oh, I hope he shoots a Democrat of 5th Avenue! ThatтАЩll drive the libs nuts!тАЭ
I could pray on 5th avenue and not lose any evangelicals! Nup, not going to excite the base!
Really seemed like an appeal to the crazies to say, тАЬplease donтАЩt try to kill me again.тАЭ
