Charlie, I'm going to miss you at the Bulwark. But honestly, after years of shoveling out the Augean stables, you're more than entitled to a break. Thank you for standing up the closest thing this Left Coast Independent has to a political "tribe". And the Pro Democracy tribe will be a bulwark against illiberal craziness, protecting civility, thought, and "centrists" from left to right. To steal a march from Uncle Joe, "We're The Bulwark! And there's nothing! Nothing! Beyond our capabilities if we do it together." God bless, guy. Go visit those grandchildren.
Charlie Sykes. I think I found you about a year or so ago, and I, a lifelong liberal, started listening to a voice of sanity I never expected to hear. It started with you, and gradually I found Mona, JVL, Sarah, Tim, Will, and everybody else. I love you all. I hope you will still be around, Charlie, because I don't know how I'll face this election season without your wisdom. Please don't disappear completely my friend.
There is no market for dull competence. I don't get the voters. The economy question has me awake at night. 350K new jobs? Drilling more oil than ever. Stock market highs. My 401K at an all time high. Unemployment 3.7% AND THEY TRUST TRUMP ON THE ECONOMY? GAH!
When Charlie left his gig as a radio talk show host at WTMJ in Milwaukee, I lost track of him. I am not now and never have been a conservative, but it didn’t matter too much when listening to Charlie. He has, and still is, a master wordsmith. Then, there he was! On MSMBC! My husband asked why I was I was jumping up and down screaming “Charlie, Charlie! I found you!” And, I might say, one of best commentators on the channel. I hope he doesn’t give up that gig.
I finally became a subscriber of the Bulwark. I looked forward to the end of the day to when I could sit down and listen to Charlie’s podcast. It was brilliant.
I knew how special he was before the Bulwark. I listened to his Trump interview. It was ballsy, a masterpiece in interviewing.
Boy, will I miss him. To quote Carly Simon, “nobody does it better.”
I'll miss you but I get it about the hamster wheel, being about your age myself and a new Nana! I know you won't be very far away and I look forward to your continued contributions, if less frequent. I will compensate somehow, which will probably involve more coffee.
I friggin' love Charlie Sykes! He is a good, decent, honorable conservative (having been a liberal all of my voting life) I can't believe I am writing this! But, that is who he is. I watch him all the time on MSNBC, read the bulwark every day...and I will miss him. Good on you, though, Charlie for getting off the hamster wheel of crazy! You deserve your opportunity to reconnect with yourself. I will look for you, wherever you land, and continue to enjoy you and your good work! THANK YOU for that!
Why the fuck can Koch and others who back Haley just throw everything they have at the trump nonsense and make it end? They have genius level marketers and PR folks who can do it.
While I cannot know Haley's actual sentiment on any of this, I do know that I don't want to be afraid of the person at the healm of our nuclear codes and foreign relations.
Regardless of what benefits a second trump presidency could bring them, why are the big money folks not fighting this tooth and nail? They are smart. They understand the potential repercussions. Of enough of them line up, the orange menace is cooked.
To Charlie— Thank you for fighting on the side of protecting our great American experiment and the principles of democracy that are now at stake. Your perspective will be missed by this Bulwark subscriber!
It's frankly hard to imagine The Bulwark without Charlie Sykes. He is the cornerstone of the whole operation. I wish him well but will miss his wit and wisdom.
Thanks for the story about Charlie's interview, which I'd never heard... I'm a Cheesehead and super bummed because I just found the Bullwark recently—and was shocked and delighted that Mr. Sykes, the right-wing partisan I remembered from Milwaukee, had seen the light and was now funneling his extensive talents into the anti-Trump movement. I'm so sorry I won't hear his funny, spot-on opinions every day on Youtube, anymore :( ...But I'm happy for his liberation, and now one of his biggest fans! xxoo
I subscribed to Ms. Weiss for a while but eventually could not take he deep dive into crazy and left. Its not just that I disagreed. I enjoy reading logical rational cases that provides analysis even when I have problems with the direction or suspicion about the autthor's motives. But Bari's descent into crazy town was a bit too much for me.
