There’s a rising chorus of voices -- not just among the Trumpers -- who decry this indictment as political. Of course, it’s political. It became political the moment a common criminal decided the presidency was the best place to hide from the law. In fact, this may be the only real reason Trump ran for the office. On voting not to convict Trump in the second impeachment, Mitch McConnell said, “We have a criminal justice system in this country. We have civil litigation. And former Presidents are not immune from being held accountable by either one.” Yet, now it’s political? The obviously straight line for Republicans is if it’s political it’s unaccountable, or at least above accountability. Admitting Trump is culpable, allowing him to be held accountable is nothing less than owning the fact that they -- the entire party, not just the insurrectionists that came later -- were complicit in everything Trump did and has done. These crimes he’s been indicted for were crimes Trump committed BEFORE he became President. How fitting. The other indictments would cover actions after he became president, after the party got to “know” him. Come on. They knew he was a snake when they took him in.
