Mike Lee is a disgrace to every value we cherish. Millions of Americans have died to preserve these values. What kind of people can support this and stay silent? This cancer is spreading and we must find the cure.
Two points: 1) I’m having trouble reconciling statements about how Utahans value civility with the state’s voting record. They elected Lee, after all, to say nothing of the poster child for incivility, Trump himself. 2) Whatever happened to standing up and calling the likes of Lee out BECAUSE IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO?!?! Republicans and Democrats alike, at the national and local levels. Instead of responding in human and humanist ways, they are in a massive strategy session. Yes, Dems winning is important, but this is where they miss the boat. Kudos for the MN lawmakers who called out Lee to his face.
Utah keeps electing Republicans and Lee is a prime example of no class or propriety. they are getting what they paid for. The guy is real scum to have put out what he did. That is what has happened to the GOP. Haters thanks to Nuttie Gingrish.
As for the DNC, Martin is a disaster and needs to go. Becoming haters like the GOP is not the answer. Talk to people to find out what they need and or want. Forget all this BS about what should we do. Simple Talk to voters.
1) Too bad Utahns didn't focus on Trump in the same way they are now focusing on Lee. Lacking in empathy, indecency and just nastiness is an apt description of Trump; might have made a difference in 2024..
2) The DNC is a hopeless mess. Any party that spends $20M on a study to learn how to talk to men is deeply confused, doomed to fail. Why the hell aren't Dems with influence crying out for Never Trump Republican operatives to come in and help clean up the mess, teach them how to organize themselves (quell the influence of "the groups" for starters), how to street fight, how to run attack ads, all media, all year long, weakening the MAGA grip on reality and boosting Dem chances in 2026 and 2028? I've stopped giving money to the DNC and have no reason to unless and until they get their shit together. I'm giving to the protest organizing efforts, vet political outreach, and key Senate races. The Senate is the eye on the prize: 67 votes to remove Trump forever.
Felt like on an Oliver/Last Week Tonight -- they "outed" Lee on a paid for ski trip as unapologetic-ally loving his luxury lifestyle and feeling entitled to it even though a supposed "public employee". Like, he knows he's a Utah Republican who through no charisma and bowing to MAGA won election to the Senate. He will be able to do what he desires.
Fewer Senators occupying brain cells in productive society's minds would be the first real big step to a federal government that works.
I would like to add to the evil being perpetrated by Mike Lee. An amendment in the bad Big Bill is introduced by Mike Lee and Steve Daines (R-MT) to sell 3.3 million acres and an additional 258 million in the next five (5) years of our lands (BLM & USFS). The stupidity and greed never stops.
Democrats should absolutely ban super PACS in the primary process. How would doing that harm their chances against Republicans in general elections? These people are too beholden to the big donors, which is why they can't get their shit straight.
Mike Lee is a disgrace. He was actively involved in Trump's plans to overturn the 2020 election by having Republican controlled state legislatures create "alternate" state elector slates. https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/09/11/mike-lee-trump-jan-6-texts-leaked-pence. This part is particularly rich: Lee also "smirked" at the suggestion that Pence was in danger at the U.S. Capitol when members of a mob who chanted "Hang Mike Pence" came within five to 10 feet of him. "Who actually tried to kill Mike Pence?" Lee responded. "Who actually tried to kill him? Lee wasn't embarrassed then, he's not embarrassed now.Just when you think he can;t go any lower, he does.
The Democrats should run a strong campaign against him only if research shows that he can be beaten. We should spend time and money against candidates we can't beat.
IMO, the dysfunctional DNC made the mistake of a lifetime by failing to elect Ben Wikler, DNC party chairman in Wisconsin. An infinitely more talented political operative. The DNC has been a mess for quite a while. And huge challenge for anyone to handle. David Hogg was an incendiary asshole, but I think Wikler would have been able to put this self important prick in his place before the committee was soiled by his destructive antics. In the next paragraph, I'll tell you how I really feel about Hogg and his effort to hogg-tie the party. 😡
No, not the point at all. But what does matter is party coherence in a such desperately incoherent time. The oldsters absolutely need to let go. Absolutely. But not by the power grabbing brute force tactics of divisive self aggrandizing punks like David Hogg. IMHO. His actions have greatly damaged a party trying to heal. "Plan better" needs to come to the fore. Where are the Ben Wiklers?
Minnesotan here. I’ve already called Senator Thune and Mike Lee’s office several times. Unbelievable that he hasn’t been censured, but that’s a testament to the moral degeneration of the whole Republican Party. Rotten to its core.
Dang, I’ve been waiting for this to happen to Mike Lee. Utahns (also Mormons) that I’ve known are kinda like Mitt Romney. Definitely not Cletuses. Civil, honest people in my experience. Very gracious. I don’t think much has changed since I was in Las Vegas in the 90s. It didn’t matter to them that I wasn’t churchgoing. I’d be asked to go to worship with them, but not repeatedly. Not the same as with Christians I’ve known, where I felt people were trying to convert me.
Those folks I knew would not like Mike Lee’s behavior. At all. I’m starting to think this might snowball.
I am 0.00% convinced that any group of Republicans will suddenly sit up and object to incivility in their party, especially at this point in the authoritarian slide. (One hopes that they would also be bothered by the assassinations, but that is far from a given in Trump's Republican party.) It would be nice, though.
As a practical matter, I wonder how many Utahns would change their mind if Mike Lee were to earn a strong rebuke by the LDS Church. I feel like that still carries weight, the same as perhaps for the Southern Baptists.
Is it my imagination or does Mike Lee bear a physical resemblance to Joe McCarthy? Maybe an ad campaign that features a side by side with voice over “Have you no decency, Senator?”
In my opinion President Obama has it about right, the Demopublican strategy of too little and too late has worked brilliantly to deliver success and victory to the Republicrats. Continuing down that road has squandered valuable time and the cost of recovering lost ground is mounting daily. My guess is the Demopublican old guard and donors are both casting about for new leadership which is able to galvanize a moribund party into unified action to oppose the worst excesses of the T. Rump criminal enterprise. Hope they find such leadership although the hour is late as Project 2025 rolls along to completion before the mid-terms.

I hope so. It seems that their self inflicted wounds are the only way to get rid of these gutter bacteria.

Yes, the important thing is to protect the geriatric incumbents that are keeping the Democratic Party in power . . . oh, wait! . . .

Are Lee's antics inducing Utahns to reconsider McMullin?
