Drives me crazy! I know that the American public at-large is dumb enough to believe it, but I would think stockbrokers would be a little more introspective. But nope.
"This time SURELY she won't pull the football out of the way when I try to kick it!"
We should never lose sight of the timeless advice that the stock market is not a weighing machine running on empirical evidence, but a voting machine fueled by emotion.
Every Trump threat or phony cease-fire announcement has the desired (paired) effect of moving the market up and down. Market volatility makes money for traders. Now we have a President who is willing to make idiotic statements and repeatedly TACO because it creates a trading opportunity.
I'm not sure if it's a matter of introspection as much as it is them realizing that plenty of more casual traders will pump up a stock surge, and the more serious stockbrokers are just riding the wave for additional money.
This idea actually terrifies me: "In other words, anyone whose retirement account includes an index fund—millions of people—will suddenly, in effect, own much less of all the companies they previously had, and much more of SpaceX and the AI companies." What happens when the AI bubble bursts? Why, all our retirement accounts will shrink. Thanks to greedy, stupid market CEOs who want "in" on the AI IPO $$ and who could care less about our retirement funds. Oh, and who want to kowtow to Musk and the other AI bros. 🤬
The game is rigged against us regular schlubs. Someone will make a mint from the S&P nonsense on the backs of us folk. It'll probably piss enough folks off that they vote for another businessman to help their retirement funds. Surely it'll work this time! :)
Thank you for the kind words. I'd just as soon not get into particulars, but things have been rough the past few weeks, but we're making great progress!
As someone who used to work in the financial markets, I'm stunned that they keep falling for it. It's The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Surely at some point they'll no longer react, like with the tariffs.
Interesting fact: the S&P 500 is up over 8% since the Iran war began, even though gas and diesel prices are up about 50% and inflation is up significantly overall. It just goes to show it is virtually impossible to time the market (excluding of course trades based on insider information—not that anyone would do that).
"Don’t sleep on the fact, Blanche urged them, that “senators whose records were secretly subpoenaed” by Special Counsel Jack Smith can get in on the settlement fund too!"
Detail that makes this even more odorous: They can get the money in secret.
It says something about what Trump and Blanche think of their side's Senators that reminding them of the opportunity to steal taxpayer money in secret would change their vote. And maybe it will!
Speaking of the Iran war, it's hard not to see the House leadership canceling a vote on war powers as emblematic of their fear of voting in general. They are no more interested in allowing their own members to express a majority opinion than they are in letting the public express theirs in the coming midterms - except under certain controlled circumstances that guarantee the outcome they want.
Taking no stand on anything is seen as a reliable path to re-election for the majority that come from districts where one party always gets 2/3 of the vote.
That's why Mike sent everyone home. But, in going home, if the Rs listen to their voters, then upon return, they might take that vote that DonnieFelon fears.
True. The sycophants cannot allow a vote that crosses Trump so blatantly. That happened over Epstein only because it was taken out of leadership hands.
If I were a Republican with Representative who so openly does not “represent” me i would be camped outside their office.
Of course I am not in yhat position, but couldn't be more disgusted by yhe state of congress.
They don’t want a vote total that would displease the president so the don’t bring anything to a vote. And then get away from DC for a long break. I suspect there are many voters out there who figure if Congress doesn’t produce anything it, that’s good.

So as usual, the Republican Senators only care if it affects them directly. They didn't like a slush fund for the people who tried to kill them along with Mike Pence.
Wait, why aren't we calling this the Pence Assassination Fund? But I digress.
Anyway, they don't bother to vote against people trying to kill me or other Americans, but they have the guts to finally vote against the January 6th attackers who went after them personally?
And the Trump Admin expected them to give money to people who threatened to kill them? That's actually very weird when you think about it. "Hey, those gallows they built to hang Mike Pence were expensive. They were hoping to get Lindsey and Mitch in there as well."
Everyone has seen what happened on Jan 6. Congressional Republicans know how unpopular it is to reward violence. Thing is, no one can seem to put two halves of this story together - connecting the violence on Jan 6 to, not just lies about the election results, but a planned conspiracy to discredit the results of 2020.
Despite NO EVIDENCE and 59 lost court cases, election denial remains an essential qualifier for every Trump acolyte. After 6 years how are they still getting away with this? Election denial is just as obviously corrupt and stupid as the Comey case (9 months of investigation for an Insta post- seriously, people?) the Slushfund from Hell, or any other BS legal claim made by Trump's DOJ. How hard is it to link the violence to the conspiracy and lies?
If Trump wants to bring up how unfair the treatment of cop beaters has been, let's shine a big, blaring spotlight on WHY Jan 6 happened. Trump and a cohort of Republicans lied and coerced the rioters into believing the election was stolen. If a stolen election is the affirmative defense for the violence, then the burden is on the defense to prove that, and they can't. Put the burden of proof on the election deniers!
Just for fun, can we start asking if the 2016 election was stolen? What about 2000? 2024?
Election security hawks should have a lot to say about every presidential election, no?
Without exception, any "suspicious" ballots or counts from 2020 have a correlary from another year (for that matter, the same year in other counties and states) that look identical but in the other party's favor. It's so hard to listen to fuckhats that can't understand math.
There should be memes everywhere with pics of the cop-attacking J6 rioters accompanied by the wording "Beat a cop, get a millions from the Trump Slush Fund."
"In other words, the current level of Republican dysfunction is only possible thanks to this year’s strategic successes by Senate Democrats..."
That was the nicest thing anyone has said about Senate Democrats in years. Chuck Schumer should take Andrew out for lunch, or at least send over a cookie bouquet.
Yes, thank you, Andrew, for explicitly calling well-deserved attention to the Democrats’ strategic resolve!
Did any of these far-sighted Dem’s imagine 7 months ago when they insisted on shutting down the government rather than funding masked, unaccountable ICE thugs that it would come to this insane situation in May, 2026: a GOP reconciliation bill to fund the thugs without Dem support which then receives a veto threat from tRumpy because it doesn’t include his absurd ballroom, slush fund, and “get out of IRS” free card?
Believe it or not, the House and Senate GOP actually said no to Trump."
Actually, NO that is not a Republican Spine. That is Republican ANGER. Because their dear leader endorsed someone they loathe instead of one of their own.
Where was their willingness to stand up to dear leader any time in the last 16 months?
While I'm grateful the leopard eating their faces is finally happening to them, if they could never grow a spine in service to our country and their oaths of office, then they don't credit for anything now.
I'm reminded of the Good Place plotline of changing behaviors first and then changing motivations. Anything that drives a little more distance and dysfunction between this administration and congressional Republicans is a small but real win.
And since Trump's reaction to everything is a temper tantrum, a disagreement on any subject has the potential to spiral into something larger and provide content for election season this fall.
I live in Texas - I wouldn't even want him in my state! Paxton is as corrupt as djt & his family. Right now, we are constantly being bombarded with ads at almost every commercial break - paxton then cornyn, cornyn then paxton. Tuesday can't arrive soon enough for me. Looks like Paxton will win, but the double-dose of sleazy candidate ads will reduce.
Trump and his scam a minute, anti-American collaborarors are finally getting a public viewing. The sun is out. The voters are upset. Thank goodness this is finally happening. It's never too late. In a majoritarian based system, 34% approval rating and falling is a death spiral nightmare for incumbents. Let's hear from more of them. All Americans need to hear from leaders they trust that the Trump agenda is a massive scam.
Thank you Benjamin Parker for those lines from McClellan Gate. Very moving and appropriate to Memorial Day. Also so moved by General Hertling's remarks about Memorial Day in his piece.
This new arch thing does seem disrespectful, doesn't it? in so many ways.
PLEASE, do not forget about the "TRUMP (FAMILY & RELATED COMPANIES/ENTITIES) GET OUT OF JAIL (IRS PAYMENTS & AUDITS) FREE CARD" - which is more egregious, costly and self-dealing than the Thug Slush Fund. While the Republicans were voicing concern about the Thug Fund, they were saying nothing about the Get Out of Jail Free card.
Related query - Why is DJT so confident, with the polls and his standing as low as ever, that he thinks this is a good time to propose the “Thug” or slush fund, and the “get out of audit forever” card, etc.? Why does he appear to be unconcerned about the mid-term elections? What does he know that we do not? Does he believe he has a fix already in for the election? Is there another shoe to drop? OR has he made enough money that he is thinking about cutting and running, and leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces...
The audacity and the timing of all of these initiatives leave me uneasy...
I think T's highest purposes are to 1) erase the stain of having lost in 20, and 2) fill the empty place where a soul would be with $$. He'd rather golf and be applauded at Maralago full time, but for the time being he must president in order to fulfill his needs. And as long as he's presidenting , he'd like to do a little empire building and put his personal touch on the world order, akin to his taste in interior decoration and monument building. Crazy people do crazy things.
If the Dems win big-time in November, I am expecting a tsunami of bad, dastardly, evil, greedy things to be done by the Trump regime before January 2027.
His slush fund will be used to bribe/threaten local/state election officials not to certify elections that don't go the Republicans' way. Blanche will file hundreds of lawsuits contesting inconvenient elections. And Trump absolutely will bully Mike Johnson into refusing to seat the Democrats in the House.
Can we agree that Trump's bag man/consigliere Todd Blanche must never be confirmed as AG; and that if he is not replaced by another nominee he should be impeached?
I just looked it up. It's up to 210 days, except that that's paused while the Senate considers a nominee. Seems like all Trump had to do is nominate Satan himself--or someone similar--and Blanche just floats along.
I don’t think the spine will stand. I think they will complain, pass it and collect money from the fund in secret. They have shown themselves to have zero morals or ethics over and over. It is simply the greed or fear factor.
Look at the bond markets. They are serious.
Day trading is not my thing, but some people do well just watching, jumping in, then jumping out.

Non illigitium carborundum, as they say, Mike.
Good advice! :)
Holding you in the Light, as the Quakers say.
I'm humbled by your thoughtfulness!
Am late to this Mike. Hope all will be well if not back to normal for you. You are a great contributor to the Bulwark.
You're very kind. I'm just a goofball spouting off when I have a few free moments.
Mike, I miss the snark!
You're very kind!
Exporting our finest vintage California Good Vibrations your way. Love and light, Mike.
You're very kind, thanks!
Best wishes and I hope you're doing ok and that things turn out well for you and yours.
We're making solid progress, thank you for the well wishes.
It's like a Trump Golden Goose--or ATM.
DJT's ATM

Well, there is that old story of the boy who cried wolf one too many times.

Those numbers are stunning! And millions of us not in on the gift are counting nickels and dimes to determine what we can have for dinner. Outrageous!
"Don’t sleep on the fact, Blanche urged them, that “senators whose records were secretly subpoenaed” by Special Counsel Jack Smith can get in on the settlement fund too!"
Detail that makes this even more odorous: They can get the money in secret.
It’s just so on-brand that of course Blanche gives voice to the one and only motivation that he and putrid boss recognize: money.
Preferably someone else’s money.
Preferably received in return for making no effort whatsoever.
The entire slush fund debacle smells of three day old fish, and finally reaching the Republicans’s noses.
It says something about what Trump and Blanche think of their side's Senators that reminding them of the opportunity to steal taxpayer money in secret would change their vote. And maybe it will!
Where's that WTF response choice!

Pence assassination fund, I like it, Kate! I wish I thought of that one!
That's called diminishing cost per use.
$1000 for one hanging, $500 per use for two hangings, $250 per use for four...soon it will be free!!!

I'm wondering about the blind pig and the acorn, but OK. A good thing is a good thing.
The blind pig can still smell. 😊
in both sense of the word
I love an oxymoronic title, but let’s be realistic. Any vertebrates that existed in conservative world have long since been driven out of the party.
No, see, they're incredibly brave because they didn't want to give money to people who tried to hang them.
Weren’t the attackers looking for Nancy Pelosi as well? Equal opportunity thugs. In Felon Trump’s eyes, those deserve special compensation!

Exactly! They were mad that trump endorsed someone that's not in their "club".
Would you want a guy like Ken Paxton in your club?
Texas GOP ain’t sending their best
I just had a thought, what if they are?

My fear exactly. "How about a million bucks, just between you and me, to not sign that certification?"
If not, he can send some of his thug- militia millionaires to apply some persuasion.
I suspect it's the first time a president has created his own paid militia. How well-armed can they be, given, that slush-fund??
Agreed! No low is too low for the trump and his magat minions.
I don't think it's a spine being developed. It's probably a small shift towards self preservation.
THIS!

Once the stored oil runs out and the world has to quickly cut usage by 20%, Iran will be back in the news.
