The skull for a face reminded me of the scene in a Transformers movie where someone was surprised that they were tricked by Megatron. "They are literally named Decepticons"! I thought that was great. Maybe this movie works for me.
If this had been done back in the 80s, we could have had Brian Blessed as Fisto, Joan Collins as Evil-Lyn, and Rip Taylor as the voice of Cringer. The iron was hot, dammit, why didn’t they strike? WHY DIDN’T THEY STRIKE?!?
Sometimes you just need a movie that lets you turn your brain off for two hours and indulge your inner-thirteen year old sense of humor. Sounds like they nailed that, here.
I would argue with the film industry that we GenXers differ from millennials in how we relish (or not) revisiting the symbols of our collective childhood. Yes, we love to harken back to recollections of riding our bikes with zero supervision, eating fruit loops in front of the tv on Saturday mornings, drinking straight from the garden hose, and covertly watching Battlestar Galactica when our parents were away because it was strictly forbidden by mother. (Wait. Expunge that last one. I think that was just me.)
But I’d be very surprised if many in my gen were excited about watching a resurrection of an aforementioned Saturday morning cartoon ‘updated’ with middle school innuendo.
(I’m not saying that Millennials gravitate towards that iteration either, but they seem to be more enthusiastic about their childhood ethos in general.)
One exception to a resurrection. X-Men '97. Second season is about to drop and my mood is hype. But they also worked hard to retain the original comic/animation look. They picked up where the other one left off, instead of rebooting it. And it is a show not a full length feature film. BUT. I have started rewatching the 1992-97 version with my daughter and we did agree that sometimes the older material shouldn't change medium that much. it just often doesn't work out that well. and there are some things of her past she wouldn't want to see rebooted but with just the newest tech
Nothing like a little intergenerational fandom! I still have fond memories of the week I was home sick with the flu as a teenager and stayed up late every night watching 60s James Bond movies with my dad.
Do I expect this movie to be bad? Yes.
Do I intend to go see the movie to bask in the nostalgic vibes from my 80s childhood? Also yes.
Did I buy the Teela Barbie? Yep. OK, enough confessions, I'm going now,,,very very busy. Lol
Yeah, that D&D movie a couple years back is very good, but it's also ... I don't know, more comfortable with what it is. It doesn't resent being a Dungeons and Dragons movie or want to mock the very idea of a Dungeons and Dragons movie.
I've never played D&D but have it on good authority from friends who have run games that that movie is exactly what a D&D game is like when the players refuse to be guided along. That always seemed right...
It's nice when a review perfectly encapsulates and validates my impression from watching the extended trailer of this movie.
Omg… I LOVED He-man as a kid… had the toys and this movie should definitely be for me but… might be waiting for digital!

They did do this back in the 80s. Meg Foster was Evil-Lyn. Fisto didn’t make the cut and Cringer wasn’t possible on what was an extremely low budget.
I’m like 99% sure there was a he-man movie (weirdly, it was this plot but in reverse?) but without any of those castings. ☹️
I just pity you having to sit through it. So now i know what the masters of the universe sandcastle thing at Coney Island is about.
Now "Pressure" on the other hand is great. Saw it last night.
I may have something on PRESSURE in the works! Stay tuned.

Then again, I could be wrong…
Sometimes reboots work! Look at BSG! Great mid-00s show!
You mean it's not okay to drink from the garden hose? 😯

Yeah X-Men 97 was a perfectly acceptable gym show. (That is, a show I watch on my phone at the gym to get through cardio.)
I thought that Sen. Rick Scott was Skeletor! Who is this “Jared Leto” guy?
Wrong franchise. Rick Scott is Voldemort.
"Just give me my Thundarr the Barbarian movie, scored entirely by Superchunk!" he demanded, Gen-Xishly.
I liked the review so much OI feel confident I can skip the movie!
Oh man, based on this review I’m really going to like this movie.
I’m a little concerned that my 8 year-old son is as excited to see this movie as me. I might have made him weird by showing him 80’s cartoons.
That said, he also loves Minecraft, Mario, Sonic, and the rest of the playground favorites.

Listen, if I didn’t already have the 40th Anniversary He-Man I would have bought a bunch of figures from this movie. I get it.
There was a thread on Bluesky the other day that we should be two sequels into D&D Honor Among Thieves by now.
And last years Red Sonja was great silly fun. But from the trailer this just looks tedious.
I'm going to trust Lord/Miller or Daley/Goldstein for fun fantasy action. Beyond that, caveat emptor.
