I'm not surprised Mullins is turning out to be Noem 2.0. They're both dumb as a damn rock.

Oldandintheway's avatar

That is a major qualification. Trump learned from his first time in office that smart people have ideas about how to do things well. He is totally intimidated by smart people. Anyway, Trump knows more than anyone about everything. That's why we are so F**ked.

Kate Fall's avatar

Yeah, they're Mitch McConnell dumb. Mitch thought he was getting everything he wanted. What he actually got was grandchildren who won't speak to him and the elimination of polio vaccines. I know I plan to name any resurgence of polio "the McConnell outbreak."

But somehow people think Mitch is a winner, and he still has the power to throw out my vote if he feels like it in November. They're all like this. They rob their own futures just to own me. But I am so expensive, owning me is going to cost you everything.

ERNEST HOLBURT's avatar

McConnell created the foundation to the destruction of the White House and the country’s destruction. He was the arsonist and Trump poured on the gasoline.

Rich's avatar

I read a comment years ago that McConnell has had a significant hand in destroying all 3 branches of government.

J AZ's avatar

Rich - may we refer to his accomplishment as an ass hat trick? …the tri - f*k - ta?

Kate Fall's avatar

Yeah. He thought it would benefit him personally. But it didn't because it couldn't. Mitch is very, very stupid while being clever. Greed does that to a person.

quercus206's avatar

Mitch "Gravedigger of Democracy" McConnell.

I hope it's true about his grandkids.

But isn’t he a plumber? He’s given up lucrative work as a plumber for the senate and now the senate for bigwig at DHS. What’s next in his plan???

"The only way to win currency with the emperor is to roll the ball forward in directions you think he’ll personally like, and to be seen doing so on TV if you can swing it." Hitler's biographer Sir Ian Kershaw dubbed this process "working towards the Fuehrer".

TomD's avatar

That sounds a little like Tim Snyder's 'obeying in advance." The favor-seeker guesses at the Fuhrer's wishes and then satisfies them.

Daniel Weir's avatar

As far as I can tell, Trump has never condemned Hitler (or the Ku Klux Klan, for that matter).

TomD's avatar

One of his former wives said years ago that at one point Trump had Mein Kampf on the night stand. Not to actually read, surely. For show?

Eleanor Kitzman's avatar

In fact, I think he said that Hitler was a good leader.

TomD's avatar

Putting aside wars of conquest and genocide, he seemed to be far less corrupt than Trump.

Richard Yoast's avatar

Trump has several role models he has combined - the body and speech style of Mussolini, the ruthlessness (and endless speeches) of Hitler and the insanity, paranoia and viciousness of Stalin (our leader loves Russian autocrats)

CW Stanford's avatar

An irate and unpredictable tyrant may not like the ball, much less the direction. Even that miserable sycophant, Kevin "Cheshire Cat" Hassett will fail, someday, just on the odds that one of his seven hundred interviews on Face the Nation will sour, the smirk will disappear, and he'll be spanked by big daddy.

Re the scientifically authentic claim by Talarico that there are six sexes, consider this evidence, in the record, of chromosomal variations in humans that dictate actual sex variation.

A person can have more than one Y chromosome, more than two Xs, two Xs and a Y, two Ys and one X, two of both, or only one X. That makes six. (Full disclosure: This is from the excellent work of Dr. William A. Hogan, in a piece available on line: 'Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll--please read it).

Ignorant assertion of simple binary differentiation is just that: a denial of known, recorded, authenticated scientific discovery. But don't let the facts confuse people who have made up their minds.

TomD's avatar

Also, there is literally not a shred of truth to Paxton's sneering assertion that Talarico is a vegan.

Essmeier's avatar

Talarico was seen one time ordering breakfast tacos with eggs, cheese, potatoes AND NO MEAT.

That means, by definition, that he's a vegan who wants transgender for everybody, men in women's sports, open borders, rampant crime, a defunded military, and masks for everyone, all the time.

No other conclusions may be drawn from such a breakfast order. It tells the whole story.

</snark>

Cathy G's avatar

They don’t even know what vegan means. Eggs and cheese are not vegan.

TomD's avatar

Yep. But calling him a vegetarian would have been just as much a smear.

Lily who reads The Bulwark's avatar

Pardon my naïveté, but why would it matter even if he was? I’m not vegan myself, but a man who demonstrates compassion for animals is certainly no enemy of mine. Seriously, wasn’t it always Republicans who would crow about individual freedoms? Except when those freedoms involve avoiding slaughter, I guess.

TomD's avatar

Same here. He's playing to the many Texans for whom vegans are figures of fun.

Richard Kane's avatar

With all their BBQ joints going out of business, looks like Texans may be forced to become vegan. LOL!

TomD's avatar

In Texas, eating meat is a spectator sport. Please see the rules for the Big Texan Steak Ranch's 72 oz Challenge:

Jeri in Tx's avatar

Yeah, you ain't macho if you're not loading up your arteries with well marbled, red meat. Eat that steak and keel over - you're a manly man!

Funny, red meat is a predominant component of Texans' diets, in what they consume with their mouths and ears. Just sneak a peek at NextDoor comments if they get a little political. Sheesh!

Ann Marie's avatar

The lie that Talarico is vegan is a meaningless assertion that might just work in Texas, the repub primary that chose Paxton over Cornyn.

John Joss's avatar

Tom, brace yourself for some industrial-strength mudslinging and lying in the coming election cycle, with the ONF (Orange Narcissist-Felon) leading the charge with a constant spewing lf hatred, lies, epithets, vulgarities . . . an endless stream.

Talarico is, by all reports, not one of those people.

John Joss's avatar

We should get him cloned, Janet. It's scientifically possible (just kidding).

j2

Jeri in Tx's avatar

Ugh. The cornyn vs. paxton ads on TV were so bad, ugly, and indecent. I was so embarrassed that stations here ran them. We record all our favorite shows so we spared ourselves the spectacle, but we don't control TVs at public places.

I really hope Talarico can flip the seat but, boy, he's gonna go through some things...

ERNEST HOLBURT's avatar

Due to the rise in beef prices in Trump’s America, we are all vegans.

Richard Kane's avatar

The Texans can wait all they want but those cows ain't comin' home. Break out the veggies, boys!

Cathy G's avatar

Even if he was - a big “so what”

TomD's avatar

Spoken like someone is is not your typical Texan. Do you remember all those westerns involving cattle drives? Texas is where they originated.

Cathy G's avatar

That is true I am not a Texan. However, I am very aware of the general opinion regarding cattle and eating meat in Texas. Not really much different than most of the country. That doesn’t mean his dietary choices should be a primary reason to vote or not vote for him. I hope Texas will be smarter than that.

TomD's avatar

The Paxton campaign has a different view, obviously. The worst thing about it was that it was clearly scripted.

Kate Fall's avatar

The debate on this subject can do nothing but induce misery and depression in the American people, and I am beginning to believe that is by design.

John Joss's avatar

Kate, I'm not clear as to who you believe is driving this 'design' (of the debate). It seems like a rational discussion of reality. Illusion is not a reliable guide. Disillusion is healthy. Many of the responses to my original, and my comments, have been positive and realistic.

j2

Kate Fall's avatar

I mean, why do people like Paxton keep bringing this up over and over?

They say, ha ha you can't answer the question of what a woman is. But that's just not true. We've answered it correctly again and again, and MAGA just puts their fingers in their ears and blows us raspberries. They only bring up this topic to make us miserable.

Janine Bennette's avatar

People like Paxton and trump bring this up so they can get voters arguing over the sky is blue and other facts. Meanwhile, they are doing absolutely nothing for the American people and stealing from us in broad daylight.

It’s, therefore, not a ‘rational discussion’ but a fact a 12 year old can google that people have chromosomal differences. People like Paxton are going to hate on trans people or people with chromosomal differences anyway and use what well meaning people like Talarico say for sound bites to spread more hate.

Let’s keep the focus on these criminals and how they are destroying our country.

Jeri in Tx's avatar

Fear is a motivating factor. I believe republicans keep bringing up the 'other' in any form of their choosing - Browns, Blacks, women, undocumented immigrants, trans, Haitians to instill fear in people. These people will take what YOU worked for (not true).

Half of my siblings are fans of the orange idiot. They've all expressed some kind of fear of something that isn't even remotely impacting their lives. 2/3 of them are on Soc. Sec. and Medicare. What they should worry about is what would happen if they lost that check and their only means of healthcare. It's been a republican dream since it's inception. And their freedoms? These are my biggest fears - losing my country, losing my ability to care for my family and self.

Janine Bennette's avatar

Yes. It’s a classic fascist way of fear mongering to take the focus off of their evil agenda to (in your siblings case) chip away at Medicare and let social security run dry.

TomD's avatar

They have succeeded in construing kindness to others put together differently as perversion..

Mark's avatar

There isn't one singular definition when answering the question, "What is a woman." I've taken gender studies classes and understand that if you ask the question to ten women, you'll likely get ten different answers.

Kate Fall's avatar

All the more reason to believe this question is always asked in bad faith to make us miserable and fight each other.

Weswolf's avatar

It would be more useful to ask, "What is a man?"

Anyone who pointed as examples to Paxton, Trump, or members of the latter's cabinet would be a target for endless mockery.

J AZ's avatar

Kate - as long as Paxton can drive the conversation to the number of genders, no one’s talking about the number of his felony charges. Winning!

Dave Yell's avatar

Try explaining that to voters in a campaign!

severn's avatar

i think the important part is to understand the republicans will say these things because they've said them in the past in various campaigns to positive effect. So they will say them again. They will relentlessly say them -- with the goal of either getting Talarico to squirm (thus showing he's a typical politician who doesnt speak the straight truthy) or to get him to recant, recant some more and so on ... and then taking flack from his left flank who are always at the ready.

And they will then sit back and laugh their askes off...

So Talarico etc should be thinking "ok theyre going to come at me like this ... what am i going to do different that might work?"

$6 gas helps. Heck he might just say that "You know that's an interesting point he's making. I was just thinking about that today for some reason while WAITING IN LINE FOR $6 GAS... and that made me mad. 6$ gas is super expensive and i am now angry ... heck i might not be able to afford meat. I might be FORCED to be vegan. I hate that. The govt of trump is forcing me to vegan... How about you -- you want to be forced to be vegan for $6 gas?"

And that's my advice then -- go with something like that. Who cares on the merits of any of this otherwise.

Justin Lee's avatar

I'm double-dipping in the comments today, because the Houston Chronicle Editorial Board just endorsed Talarico, and I had to share this paragraph from the piece:

"Talarico, 37, is a former middle school teacher from Central Texas. In 2018, he flipped a Republican state House seat. While serving in the House, he studied for a master’s degree in divinity from a Presbyterian seminary. He looks like a grown-up Opie from the Andy Griffith Show. If his vibe were any more retro — any more earnest, any more squeaky-clean — he’d be in black-and-white, filmed at Desilu Studios."

Bluff called. The international flights threat is classic MAGA misdirection, and it's bullshit. No chance in hell they'll stop international flights. Rich MAGA business-folks take those flights all the time, even into these godforsaken sanctuary cities where they might catch liberal cooties.

The tactic is standard for these pricks, and so exhaustingly predictable: bullshit something blatantly illegal to force the Dems into defending the status quo, which shifts the Overton window of acceptable political retaliation in favor of MAGA. It's also a shiny object that takes up air, distracting us from $5 gas, bribery in broad daylight, Epstein, failure in Iran, concentration camps, and on and on and on.

Vegans are people too.

I'm sure if Paxton could disenfranchise vegans, he would. And his voters would cheer. I don't know what it's going to take to get Americans to vote for people who would protect our vote.

The hope is that we will have a forceful, reasonable Democrat in the White House in 2029. He will have an AG, someone like Jack Smith, who knows the law and wants to see it enforced. Almost every member of Trump's cabinet has committed crimes, including bribery and extortion. Many of them, such as Noem, Mullen, Hegseth, Rubio, and even RFK, have been directly involved in killing people.

40 people went to jail after Watergate. I think there are triple that number here. If there are no consequences, then these people will be back in 8 years. That is also why we need LAWS passed that will separate the DOJ from the Executive Branch and make clear qualifications for the AG and FBI Director.

ERNEST HOLBURT's avatar

Also, the next FBI director has to be a Democrat. Enough with this nonsense of making Republicans the head of the FBI.

It's really amazing how many Democrats and legacy media institutions simply refuse to accept these accusations are going to happen no matter what they do, so they might as well speak the truth and stand by it.

If Stephen Miller's fourth junior staffer's part-time assistant gets clocked going 108 in a school zone with video verification widely available, they'll claim it's a politically motivated cancel culture attack that's one step away from Sharia Law. Reducing the ticket to deescalate would just make them look right all along.

That photo in the Cheap Shot is jarring, to say the least. What a fucking shitshow. And nothing says late Roman Empire like a public indifferent to jaw-dropping corruption and a cage fight on the lawn of the people's house for the 250th anniversary of independence/President's birthday. If that's not a concrete picture of decline, I don't know what is. There will be an Edward Gibbon some time in the future to catalog this disgrace. And that Gibbon will probably be some advanced LLM.

As far as Talarico's "gaffe" that God is non-binary, I know he's the father in the trinity and all, and he got Mary pregnant and all, but who is going to actually argue that God falls into human sexual binaries? This is one of those things that sounds "woke" at first, but then if you think about it for two seconds, you realize it's pretty hard to argue with.

Colleen Kochivar-Baker's avatar

Uhm, the Holy Spirit is non binary which is why Mary remained a Virgin. After all, the bible says; "The Spirit came upon her". Talarico is correct.
