Most of its leaders have shown cowardly gall in droning on about the sinfulness of homosexuality--including this new Pope in a 2012 interview in which he accused the media of being too sympathetic to the "homosexual lifestyle," which he then very mistakenly claims is anti-Gospel. There is not a single syllable of the Gospels that is anti-gay.
I give Trump 48 hours before he starts claiming it was HIS influence that caused the conclave to choose an American pope. He will find SOME way to twist it into a win for him. My guess is the Catholics saw how in need of spiritual help the United States is under Trump. They have seen the cruel, selfish, uncompassionate brute supposedly leading the free world and decided it was an emergency of the highest order. Put the new pope right in the middle of the country needing the most help! Not a bad choice. "The closer you are to danger, the farther you are from harm."

When Pius XII died in 1958, I was 11, so this is also Pope number 8 for me. This is the first time in my life that the pope is younger than me.
