To put my current criticisms about Biden in perspective - I have spent countless hours defending him from accusations that he is confused and demented. I post fact checks that debunk the manipulated doctored videos from rightwing propaganda peddlers that paint him as senile, and I post about the lack of evidence that he was involved in Hunter's sleazy business dealings (which in spite of the Trump family grifting I still find pretty disgusting). I regularly post on social media about Biden's achievements, foreign and domestic. I try to explain, without being too preachy, all that he has managed to accomplish to my high school and college age grandkids, two of whom can now vote and despise Trump, but are also far from enthralled with Biden.
But regarding Biden's problems with public perceptions about how his age impacts his competence - his personal mannerisms are a big part of the problem. I'm wondering why, since he apparently lacks insight and self-awareness about this, his staff can't better coach and prep him? For example, his repeated regular use of the phrases "that's not hyperbole" and "not a joke" at times when no one would have reason to think he is joking - why doesn't his staff point out to him that these verbal habits are counter-productive to the image he needs to project? If his staff are afraid to incur his displeasure by leveling with him, then some friends should get together and hold an intervention.
Biden's problems with verbal communication involve more than his stutter, which no one should hold against him. I am an older adult myself and I have friends in their 80s who don't talk like they are mentally going downhill because of rambling or annoying verbal habits. If he needs to stick to a script to control his tendecies to speak in ways that reflect badly on his thought processes, then that is what he should do. There is too much at stake for these continued mishaps to be allowed to serve as one more factor dragging down his chances of re-election, given that he is determined to run again. I know that the right will always find something to attack about any opponent they find themselves facing, but that is no reason to make it so easy for them.
You make some valid points. I wish Charlie had said something constructive like this instead of just constantly (and it is constantly) picking on Biden over his age.
