Rona is as despicable as Donald Dogpoo. Liz is a potent spoiler. On a debate stage with The Obese Orange Man only a grease spot would remain - a large oil slick like when Exxon Valde hit the reef.

A ray of hope in Arizona of all places. Per Politicususa.com, Fox! is reporting that the Dem Mark Kelly is leading R Masters by 8%. And oddly, seniors and rural voters favor Kelly. Maybe all those transplants from blue areas are having an effect?

There is a problem with the Liz Cheney strategy. The Wyoming primary showed that the present day GOP is beyond repair. Most of the presumptive candidates apart from Trump will be required by the base to repeat the Big Lie in order to make it through the selection process. All of them will likely be anti-democratic, even authoritarian, racist, sexist, etc. Rona Romney will make sure of thatA De Santis is a smart and dangerous Trump. So, even if she manages to sink Trump's candidacy, the GOP will be stuck with a Trump clone. The only salvation will come either from a series of indictments and convictions for Trump, or another victory for the Dems in 2022

Curious if there are thoughts on the abortion case in Florida where the court/state is forcing a teenage orphan to carry to term because they say she isn't capable of making the decision on her own to terminate. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/16-year-old-not-mature-enough-abortion-florida-court/

This just continues the narrative of Republicans as wanting to control women.

Expand full comment

This is not about controlling women--- this is about the judicial abuse of a child.

Why was the legal guardian not in court?

If the pregnancy is under 15 weeks then the guardians consent should have been sufficient--- no trial required.

The Judge even said as much.

So why was this even in court because the judicial bypass was not needed in this case?

The girl chose not to have an attorney.

The judge, having ascertained that the child had a legal guardian, should have simply told her to get her legal guardians consent, go get her abortion and dismissed the case. Instead she used the judicial process to further abuse her.

First off, why can't she make this decision herself? Second she has an appointed guardian by the State, maybe that person refuses to give consent?

Expand full comment

Not according to her own statement--- the guardian is supportive.

If the guardian actually refused THEN the judicial bypass process could come into effect.

These parental consent/bypass laws are pretty standard across the country. The notion that abortion should be treated as an exception to medical consent requirements is unacceptable to the vast majority of Americans.

If the guardian was truly supportive, why not provide documentation to the court to bypass court review?

Even without guardian support, the court's logic makes little sense. Incapable to decide on abortion, capable enough for parenthood.

The girl presented herself to the court without an attorney. I doubt that any 16 year old could negotiate the filing process, represent herself and negotiate an appeal on her own. Any attorney in Florida would have simply secured a waiver from the legal guardian and sent the girl home to get her abortion.

My suspicion is that she was being guided by activists who believed she might be able to overturn the 2020 Parental Consent Act. Don't misunderstand me that is a legitimate way to challenge laws.

Exactly my point. The judge should have dismissed the case until such time as the judicial bypass was legally needed.

The court's logic may be bound to the logic (or lack thereof) of the law as it is written.

This blows my mind. You're not mature enough to end your pregnancy, so we're going to force you into continued pregnancy, labor and childbirth, and parenthood. I mean, what the actual what?!

Re: Cheney... Right now she is hands down the most compelling Pol in the nation. Even people like me (a Liberal/Prog) adore her... are profoundly grateful to her (and for her).

So whether or not she runs for president is beside the point. Either way won't stifle her voice.

Everyone (who is not in a cult) wants to hear from her.

Wants to see her fighting for our country.

Wants her everywhere all at once.

We want to amplify her voice, and we celebrate her for stepping into the breach.

Liz Cheney might yet be our first woman President. How or when, idk... but I'm a founding supporter of The Great Task. Go LIZ!

And nota bene: you might hate her politics as I do... but seriously, trump or cheney? A no brainer.

I'm glad Charlie is from WI to try to help me understand the state's politics, because as an outsider (NJ), the state that was/is home to La Follette AND McCarthy AND RonJon AND Tammy Baldwin simply makes NO SENSE to me.

Liz Cheney should have no problem signing whatever "support" agreement necessary to get on a stage with Trump. And after the debate she can make it clear that she views it to be as binding as when Trump signed it. Or as when Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham took oaths before the Senate to be impartial jurors in Trump's first impeachment trial, while McConnell was openly coordinating with Trump's defense team and Graham had explicitly said he wasn't going to pretend to be an impartial observer.

Of course, in her case it would be a little closer to Lincoln deceiving Congress to get the 13th Amendment passed. Deceiving the shamelessly unscrupulous Ronna Romney McDaniel in order to protect us from the anti-Lincoln should rate no more controversially.

Loved the podcast with you and Tom. I sympathize with you guys and the threats and general nastiness you must receive. I’m sure what Liz Cheney gets is that on steroids. God bless her for her courageous stance. The only bigger problem we face than maintaining our republic is climate change. Which is the more imminent is debatable, I suppose.

Regarding evolution of the species towards the end it looks like you already have some reading. I can recommend a somewhat thin book on neuroplasticity by Dr. Michael Merzenich called “Soft-Wired.” He’s also one of the many contributors to the BrainHQ app.

Maintaining the Republic is the more imminently death-dealing.

And will hurry the destructions of climate change.

I personally have low hope for a positive long term outcome. I think the dems will do OK this fall, holding the senate & maybe even plus a couple. Maybe keep the house, but election day is a long way off yet.

My fear is with the supremes taking the NC legislature case, and Ohio (my home) seems to be thinking of a similar case. If the Alito Group agrees with the NC repubs, that could be the death knell for our grand experiment. Our 3rd POTUS would roll over in his grave, while we do the same.
