Great commentary on Russia. Putin is in trouble, but it is not clear how much trouble he is in.
The only way the Ukraine war ends is if Putin dies or he is thrown out by a military coup.
Trump is not Putin; Trump may want to kill his enemies but what he does is subject them to threats and lawsuits. In the US democracy still works even though Trump is doing his best to undermine it.
Kareem Abdual-Jabbar has an interesting take on this issue in his news letter today (25 July). Basically, no one sees the world as it actually is—we all see it based on our own history and situation.
Or has them shot in the back (ie Anna Politkavskaya), gunned down on Putin’s birthday (Oct. 7) after extensive reporting on Russian atrocities and war crimes in Chechnya and the Moscow apartment bombings
Thank you for the detailed reporting and analysis.
It's important to remember all the moving parts in our world, and that just because our focus is away on other things, events and evolution on other fronts are happening and have real impact.
Thanks as always Cathy for your great reporting. Reading that quote about Ukrainian drones “smashing the fuck out of everything” just brought joy to my dark schadenfreude heart. I am both awed and inspired by the courage and adaptability of the Ukrainian people in this terrible war.
"Um, yes, where have you been? It’s like the people just now discovering in 2026 that Trump is an egotistical narcissist with no moral center."
The real question is, why does it take so long for people to come to their senses? Is our species really this naive? God help us if aliens ever invade!

Putin is definitely due for his "accident" out of a high window. This is the only way this ends.

now we wait for an american bonya (caitlin jenner maybe?) to get up the nerve to speak sharply to *her* autocrat.
Hopefully, it won't take Americans 26 years to not be afraid of the clown running the country.
Does Putin throw women from tall buildings or is this a problem for novichok?

"where have you been?"
Uh, Monaco? I guess the free press doesn't reach there....

Brave of her to a degree, but incredibly telling that Ukraine went unmentioned.
Stay away from open 5th story windows dear and watch out for powder in your underwear.
And politely decline when Putin offers you tea.

It's not naivete, but face-saving. It's hard for most people to admit they were duped.
Im taking note of the mis-direction (or asymmetry) ol criticism should DJT consolidate power here.
Your updates on Russia are invaluable. I learn so much from them. Thanks for all the time put into it
Fascinating. I hardly know what to think in the end, but on top of the good news from Hungary last week, it does feel like the winds are shifting.
