Concerning your comments about "what about the American people?" why don't you look closely at the generic no nuance questions these poles are asking. Because if you ask the right concrete questions you'll get a true read of the American people: the majority of whom do NOT like or want how immigration policy (what a joke) is being carried out.
I was pissed - not one reporter corrected Bukele in real time, that the prisoner is not a terrorist and he wouldn’t be smuggling him back into the US - but doing what Trump and our Supreme court told him (indirectly) to do! The press needs to call BS as it happens even if it means a shouting match with Steven Miller.
Sorry JVL but the Supreme Court cannot wait 20 months until the environment is better to stand UP TO TRUMP. If we have learned anything it is that Trump will always take more, dig deeper, and there is no bottom. The Supreme Court must clarify their position, put some parameters on Trump and then we have to work on the legislature to grow a backbone. May not be possible, but waiting or giving in is a sure fire way to lose our democracy.
Ring the bell! Music can help us wake up. Take a beat and listen to Money Mark's song- Ring the bell. It should be a theme song for the show. Right along with Rebecca "take us home". We are in a visceral moment intended to confuse us. We need to feel the dirt beneath our feet. Know that we belong where we stand. We don't need to second guess the going along with chaos. We need to feel what we know. Emma Goldman said: you only know something when you feel it.
If, in order to postpone a confrontation, the court says the administration abided by their order when no such thing happened, wouldn't this potentially only embolden Trump for future showdowns? Seems to me that Trump (and the rest) could plausibly read the court acting in this way as a sort of tacit deal between the court and the administration.
JVL, at the beginning of your most recent Triad column you asked five questions with regard to whatever contract there actually is with the fellow dictatorship of El Salvador. These seem to me to be crucial questions that absolutely need answers. How does anyone get answers?? Every question is SO important; has anyone answered them anywhere?
Unfortunately, I think that Roberts has a relatively easy out if he chooses to take the route that JVL suggests to give Trump a pass on this one. He can say that what the Administration did was wrong and that ICE deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia illegally, but because he is a Salvadoran citizen the Court can grant no relief, inasmuch as it cannot require the United States Government to demand that the government of El Salvador surrender a Salvadoran citizen who's on Salvadoran soil. This would be cowardly and amoral. but I bet that it would be legal. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the way it goes.
Cue up the Venezuelan makeup artist and try again ASAP.
The government will never bring any of those poor people back because they would go to the press and all the cruelty will be exposed and the government can't have that. This government will have its comeuppance and should all be sent to their overseas prison by the Court of Human Rights.
Trump doesn’t have the ingenuity to think up the El Salvador scheme. It was most likely Miller.
As far as stopping this madness. it is possible that if one or more of the attorneys representing people who are being held for deportation asked a court for an injunction forbidding the government to send ANYONE to be imprisoned outside the country until the question of whether such action is legal is settled, at least one of the circuit judges would grant it. Since both the US and Salvadoran governments claim once someone is transferred neither country can undo it, allowing people to be removed from the US to a foreign prison is an obvious denial of due process since an error can not be rectified.
re: corners - how about Musk &co stealing data not just for their AI development but for control (a la "Person of Interest" but with idiotic AI instead of ultra-intelligent AI? Carole Cadwalladr gave a ted talk last week that covers some of it: "the entire business model of silicon valley is surveillance .... we are already living inside the architecture of totalitarianism.... we now have to start acting as if we live in East Germany and instagram is the Stasi"
The fact that Trump is paying the El Salvadoran government to jail these men gives the lie to this whole thing. If he is paying them, then clearly he contracted with them for a service. That means he *has* the power to "break the contract" so to speak.
I find it completely outrageous that any judge would even entertain the administration's arguments that there is nothing they can do about this. It seems wholly self-evident that they are breaking the law and lying (aka committing perjury) and yet still, STILL the legal system acts like this is somehow perfectly normal. I think that when this makes it back up to SCOTUS, if John Roberts somehow beats a tactical retreat and gives the government another pass by making a semantics argument, then he and the members of SCOTUS who back him are no better than Trump, and no less in violation of the Constitution than Trump and the administration are. We the voters have no power at this point - SCOTUS needs to do the right thing - REQUIRE, IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, THAT NOT JUST ABREGO GARCIA, BUT *ALL* OF THOSE MEN BE RETURNED IMMEDIATELY IF NOT SOONER TO AMERICAN SOIL AND GIVE THEM ALL THEIR DUE PROCESS!
I wonder if anybody is talking to the military about staging a coup on behalf of the rest of us? Don't want to see it come to that, but we need to get this over with sooner rather than later, while our country still has a soul to save.
I just spent 90 minutes talking to a Ukrainian colleague.
His contract is up with our company and he's joining Amazon. He stated, on a team call on Monday, when introducing himself to a new hire, that he would be leaving Spain for the US soon under the new contract. I was overcome with concern, but had to wait for the meeting to end before I could say anything.
I messaged him and he expressed surprise that I was suggesting it was risky to come to the US. He admitted he hasn't payed close attention to US politics. We agreed to speak this afternoon and he was totally unaware of the risks of being an immigrant entering the US, or even just existing here. He kept trying to find the explanation for why what's happening wouldn't apply to him and I would just tell him about someone else who was violated in the way he was describing made him safe. He said his visa through Amazon would help protect him because of their investment in him. I assured him that, while that may provide him some protection from targeting, there's literally nothing that protects any of us anymore.
Unfortunately, it seems he leaves in 2 weeks and doesn't really have other options. We discussed wiping/reformatting any computers or phones, or just getting new ones altogether. Being Ukrainian, he doesn't share a lot on social media anyway, so he's not worried about that. I did advise him to 1) contact Amazon and ask what plans do they have to protect him entering and staying in the US (if any); and 2) establish some sort of plan to maintain regular check-ins with someone who will begin searching for him should they not hear from him after an allotted amount of time.
I told him I wished I was wrong. I wished I'd gone crazy and things were not how I described. But I'm not wrong and they are that way. It's crystal clear.
My wife and I plan to travel back to the lower 48 from AK this summer. If so (assuming we make it through the US border; only half kidding) we may get to meet up in Seattle after working remotely together all this time.
He did make me laugh, though, when we were discussing how people are here. He said he's a social person, but wasn't sure what to expect of Americans. I explained that we've got it all here, so there'll be plenty of friends, but there will also be people less friendly to him because he's an immigrant; maybe even because he's Ukrainian. He just responded in the most deadpan and sincere manner, "Well, I'm Ukrainian. We don't trust each other." I couldn't help but burst out a laugh and congratulate him on being one step ahead. As a Ukrainian, he's culturally much more prepared for where we're going than we are.

Trump pardoned a whole slew of " homegrowns". Why isn't anyone in the corporate media pointing that out?

The wanton cruelty and callousness they show makes it so disgusting.
Trump's cold look when he remarked about the prison being a tough place was very chilling.

Does 34 felonies make someone a homegrown criminal? Asking for a friend.....

We are the human rights abusers we used to condemn. If SCOTUS backs down we're not the country i grew up in.
I think we are already there. I am seriously considering rescinding my American citizenship

I don't get why you're point isn't brought up more, it's not a political issue it's a business one.
Not in favor of a coup, though. Did you hear that, ICE?
