So here's William off his medication again, going on an angry rant because I am apocalyptically livid about all of the things that make JVL upset today.

JVL is right that reality is a tank and that we're a deeply unserious people. But my whole life (full disclosure - I was born in 1988 and was too young to remember Bush the Elder's presidency) it seems to have been conservatives who are reveling in, cheering on, and ushering in that unseriousness, while liberals have had to follow along behind them cleaning up and making the best they can of the situation while being sabotaged at every turn. Daddy Party gets drunk off tax cuts and invades Afghanistan and Iraq, and when we ask what we can do to help we get told 'go to the mall and stick a yellow magnetic ribbon on your SUV'. Mommy Party gets elected after all of this turns to pigshit in 2006-2008, and Mommy Party actually kills Bin Laden, has to put together a coalition of the very unwilling to fight ISIS which rises to power in the vacuum that is Iraq, and they're doing it with a domestic opposition willing to say or do absolutely anything in order to undermine Obama. You know as well as I do that Mitch McConnell will say on Monday that Donald Trump is a brilliant statesman whose total capitulation to Putin was the only way to secure peace in Eastern Europe, on Tuesday that the feckless Barack Obama's weakness is the reason that the poor people of Ukraine are being invaded and persecuted by Vladimir Putin, and on Wednesday that he will use every power at his disposal to keep President Biden from deploying Our Boys to prop up the neo-nazi government of Ukraine. He won't lose any credibility with the people who listen to him for simultaneously making all three arguments based on whatever owns the libs the most at any given moment in time, because Fox News and the people who support him know that owning the libs is way more important than any sort of policy or priority.

That's deeply unserious behavior.

And just like with Red COVID, it won't be the people pushing this unseriousness who pay the price for it.

"Over the last 20 years, Americans experienced the very real costs of being the global hegemon and decided that, all things being equal, we’d rather not have the job."

And that applies to economics, too. Pulling out of the TPP, implementing tariffs, risking the dollar's status as the global reserve currency and T-bills as the investment of last refuge with the stupid debt ceiling games.
