Because they naively thought they could serve as "guardrails," but soon found themself outnumbered by those who put their own selfish interests above the good of their country. Not just the other half of the Cabinet, but most of GOP House and Senate, and countless other rabid authoritarians, shameless opportunists and spineless cowards in and out of government. While the media caricature is that a "strongman" fired all the potential "guardrails," and kept only the one-way-loyal sycophants, the fact is that it was simple "natural selection." Paranoid voters did all the "firing" and forced the many resignations. The "strongman" is nothing but a spoiled brat coward who only talks tough because he is increasingly confident of being protected and defended by his increasingly loyal and deranged volunteer army of traitors. A vote for him is a vote for them. Need I name names?
