In his concession speech on Tuesday night, Cornyn reaffirmed his loyalty to the GOP. “My hope is to keep my party in power for generations..."

Party first.

They had better get to work stopping this out of control mad king before they are ousted in 7 months

If only these GOP members of Congress that have seemingly developed the concept of a backbone had the actual power to do something other than verbally chastise trump. Funny, they still have that power, which they've had all along, until January. Until they actually use that power, all of their talk is just performative nonsense and I won't pay any attention to it.

“My hope is to keep my party in power for generations,” he told his supporters.

- Cornyn. Oh yes, he's all about improving life for the people, not accumulating power. It's like the apocryphal nazi dinner table story: if you're 99.9% maga, but Trump stabs you, you're still hard-core maga. You can go keep eating the shit you tried serving us for years.

The real problem is that the MAGA voters who really control the Republican party really believe the propaganda that the Democrats are WORSE than anything Trump does.

Thanks. And btw, it’s not a ballroom. It’s a bunker.

Big fucking deal. Cassidy is solely responsible for RFK Jr. Unless he has something to say that would actually result in Trump’s removal, don’t want to hear a mumbling word out of him.

Rick Knight's avatar

Sure but in this unique case Cassidy, as committee chair, could have blocked RFK before a vote even came to the floor. He knew the bastard was lying. But he didn’t care.

Don't ever forget that in every high-profile "deciding vote" situation, there were 50+ more of these creeps voting the same way but hiding behind him. Blame ALL of them.

I'm glad they're speaking out now, but if they really hate these J6ers, maybe they should have said something when they were pardoned.

“….to keep my party in power for generations. That’s apparently why Cornyn voted against Trump’s impeachment and voted in favor of Trump nominees, regardless of how blatantly unqualified. That’s why he groveled for Trump’s approval. Cornyn placed fealty to Trump, even when Trump betrayed whatever the GOP stood for. It seems Cornyn ‘s sole purpose was retaining enduring and unrestrained power (for generations). That appetite for unchallenged power has rather striking to the Third Reich.

You assume a decency and honesty in John Cornyn that are not in evidence.

“Anybody who equivocates and supported the thugs that harmed police officers will never get my vote in committee or on the floor.”

Tillis voted to acquit Trump, then, after Trump pardoned all those "thugs," Tillis continued to approve his cabinet picks.

Do not let these people sanitize their reputations. Too little, too late.

Jesus.

The MAGA strategy is actually pretty straightforward:

1—Put dependably loyal subjects in positions of power.

2—Insulate everyone from accountability to the electorate.

These semi-loyal losers would need to deliver actionable information (smoking guns that demonstrably change the game) to recover even a scintilla of their public reputations. Stepping to a microphone and waxing platitudes simply ain't gonna cut it, no matter how satisfying it may seem, because we're looking at entrenched insulated power. The only solution is to re-establish the sovereignty of the demos, not individual leaders, and certainly not serial impersonators.

"There’s no moral difference between the Democrats on Act Blue raising money for ‘All Cops Are Bastards’ and actually rewarding someone for assaulting a police officer” on January 6th, he told Spectrum News." Actually there IS a moral difference. Advocating/rewarding violence is a much worse moral failure than inaccurately generalizing about cops. But he WAS good about acknowledging that Obama's deal might turn out to be better than what Trump winds up getting. Trump loses his mind if he is compared unfavorably to Obama. Ketchup-on-the-wall tantrums.

Actually, the problem with Tillis' statement is this part:

"...Democrats on Act Blue raising money for 'All Cops Are Bastards'..."

This is pure fiction. It's a lie created by the RW propaganda machine.

And this part of his statement:

"...rewarding someone for assaulting a police officer."

is true. Not a lie.

He made his indignation known by comparing a lie to a fact. THIS IS HOW RW PROPAGANDA SPREADS, because he was widely quoted.

Not one of the media outlets (including The Bulwark) who printed his quote bothered to point out the lie. All it would have taken is one or two sentences following his quote, for example,

*While expressing some indignation, Senator Tillis falsely stated that Act Blue has raised money for a fictional anti-Cop organization. Whether Senator Tillis actually believes this right-wing conspiracy theory, or was just pandering to the MAGA base, is unknown.*

Thank you for pointing this out. I'm so weary of microscoping every single clause that this just kind of got past me. The pervasiveness of the lying on the part of Republicans is hard to keep up with. It's exhausting and that's what authoritarians count on.

I commend to you all this terrific Daniel Barkhuff piece: https://dbarkhuff.substack.com/p/on-cornyn

Very good, short and concise essay. Thanks!

I laughed out loud at Gary Brantley's comment below the essay,

"Cornyn continues to amaze me with his ability to walk without a spine.

Here in Texas, we’ve seen it for a long time."

It says plenty about ANY politician that they are unable to speak truthfully when they are in office. I get that they want to be elected, but the love of power seems to outweigh the cowardice of telling lies.

I hope they do all they can to stop Trump, but I doubt it.
