One has to search high and low for clear reporting on healthcare’s crazy cost crisis that is about to bite 20 million folks. Paul Krugman was able to spell it out a few days ago, but clear explanations on this are seriously lacking.

Great article but your proof reader missed a very important fact. You mentioned Republicans multiple times throughout yet they don't exist anymore. The White House, Senate & House of Reps are run by the MAGA party now. There is not one member seated in any of those places that holds Republican values as you Americans knew them to be. The biggest tell is the fact that ALL of them are happy to sit by & watch your Constitution be put through the shredder by this administration, & cheer as it happens.
I am opposed to extending the "temporary" Obamacare subsidies on principle - they were supposed to be temporary. I am adamantly opposed to giving anything back, or changing anything passed, in the Big Beautiful Bill. You didn't see Biden negotiating on giving back portions of his "Inflation Reduction Act", did you? Elections have consequences, and the BBB is all an old establishment Republican like me gets out of the crazy-train Trump administration.
That said, it's almost laughable how transparently false the excuse that illegals will get free federal healthcare if we negotiate with Democrats is. I'd prefer the justification of "Win an election, then you get to have a say. We're offering a clean CR - isn't that what you always say is right and proper when the roles are reversed? Be glad we're not forcing you to swallow more shit sandwich. You don't get to hold the government hostage for major policy changes when you don't control a single lever of power in Washington. You should have thought about this possibility when you were giving away inflation-generating new subsidies, passing climate mitigation spending, and hiring 85,000 new IRS agents - ramming that through when you had the votes."
Frankly, I'm on the GOP side in this shutdown. Trump may be the devil, and I'll never support him personally, but the BBB was a big win for Republicans like me,...and we don't give things back. Keep it shutdown as long as it takes to force the Democrats to pass a clean CR.
I agree that the Republican talking points are lies, and every legit fact check, including the AP, agrees. But what about the claim that CA and a number of states, as the vile PJ Media says: "all undocumented immigrants, regardless of age, will qualify for Medi-Cal, California's version of the federal Medicaid program for people with low incomes....” This claim goes on to say, well, Medicaid is a joint Federal/state partnership and every state gets Federal money for it. I know that "generally" Federal law prohibits Medicare/Medicaid funds to go to non citizens, is the real fact that these state programs use only state funds?
I think the Democrats should say in rebuttal of the stopped-funding for the transportation projects as well as the federal employee layoffs during this shutdown that “save us billions”that the President unilaterally has given Argentina $20 billion as US farmers lose the China soybean market TO Argentina due to Trump’s tariffs. I would put that on loop. I think if people knew that, it would piss them off.

While health care (ACA subsidies) is a worthy cause/position for the Dems, it simply misses the strategic advantages of calling out all the offenses of the Trump administration. Sure, health care has been poll tested and Schumer and Jeffries keep singing that tune, but my god, there is so much more at stake. These "leaders" simply must conger the fortitude and courage to say, fuck yourself, and let the government stay shut down for the foreseeable future. Yes, there will be firings, yes there will be pain, but how else can we bring to a stop the madness of the regime? I want to scream at how ineffective and short-sighted the Dems are right now. Man up, boys and girls. Let it all come tumbling down. And when we are in the majority, start the rebuilding and reform process from scratch, making our smaller and more efficient government serve the People better.
Let’s be clear: the reason why the emergency Medicaid fund exists is because of EMTALA laws. These laws require that hospitals and healthcare providers care for people who are in extremis. It prevents a laboring mom or a person in a bad car accident from being turned away because they aren’t insured. Compliance with this law is monitored very carefully by the government and hospital accrediting bodies and they don’t ask if a patient was a US citizen. Do undocumented immigrants benefit from this fund? Certainly. But as a healthcare professional, parsing out if a person in real danger of death is a US citizen or not is just ridiculous. And this funding benefits US citizens far far more than undocumented people.
I know that in the 1930’s singer Bessie Smith died because the closest hospital to her would not admit her because she was black. The only hospital available was too far away and she did not make it. I guess EMTALA laws were passed to prevent another happening like that one. Why anyone thinks that someone in dire medical care should be turned away from a hospital is unbelievably cruel

Giving your interlocutor the benefit of the doubt is something you do when you think your s/he is operating in good faith despite being wrong. We have seen hundreds or thousands of times now that none of the Rs is operating in good faith. They are just playing us for the chumps that we are. We need to leave them alone on that field of play.

Does Emergency Medicaid also cover cost of care for uncovered US citizens? As an example uninsured US citizens that do not qualify for Medicaid.
Is it part of the Medicaid expansion? Specifically can hospitals in non-expansion states get reimbursed via emergency Medicaid?
