'Gold standard' science and 'fighting special interests' needs context. If RFK Jr. agrees with a position that equals the gold standard regardless of what the scientific majority says regardless of how vast that majority is. Special interests equal those groups with whom he doesn't agree, e.g., pharmaceutical companies which produce vaccines, while those groups with whom he does agree (here tanning bed groups) aren't special interests, they're just correct. See, his statement and those of DHHS make perfect sense now.
When I was a kid, and my father would mention that some man he just passed was a long term sailor, I would ask him how he knew that because he never met the man. He explained that sailors spent all day, for weeks on end in direct sunlight. My father was in the navy, and saw the effects of too much sunlight. Those sailors were young when they enlisted, but as they aged, their skin resembled a leather coat. And their faces were permanently lined; no amount of Botox could fix this. A lifetime of looking like an old boot, or dying early from cancer, seems a price too much to pay for a glowing tan.
How many people have to die from overuse of tanning beds before the government places some restraint on the industry. Might The Bulwark seek a FOIA request to see the numbers who have already died from this problem?
It becomes an addiction. Far too many women I know who tanned, said it made them look and feel healthier, and that any lapse or cessation in tanning was like giving up cigarettes or alcohol....very very difficult to do. Bobby has an addictive personality...this is just another type of addiction.
I also share the hope of other posters that his appearance is repellent enough to prevent tanning. I find it so.
Thanks to everyone for their lovely comments. My mom was a psychologist here in Southern California. She passed away a long time ago (1978). During her life, she assisted her oncologist who was doing research concerning immunotherapy. She wrote an NIH grant and her doctor received $6 million dollars for research. Sadly, I do not believe that would have been possible with the current administration.
Let's start really talking about spinelessness. This administration is pushing the envelope in all directions; RFK with poor medical leadership, warring without approval, tariffs without approval, voter suppression, terrible gerrymandering, bribery, challenging birth right, FBI and DOJ misuse, ICE masks and condoned cruel behavior, detention without out "due process" - and the list goes on. Our experts need to come out in force to save democracy - our University PhD's need to show ethics , as do our Doctors, and especially our Federalist Society of unethical lawyers. We pay these professionals well and they need to step up even if it means disturbing their fraternity or board or regents. TOO MANY SPINELESS are doing nothing- our great grand parents gave us the chance to live in a great country - now we all need to save it for our kids.
What a bunch of freaks! Seriously, they are all freaks. Really. Just look at the guy and then he starts talking - and he's our highest ranking official for health and medical related questions. The moral insanity of it all would have been condemned as a fiction too improbable.
Easy solution: don’t use tanning salons. Ask any dermatologist-they would agree with me. Otherwise, it’s your problem if you get skin cancer , not this absolute wreck of a human, Bobby Kennedy.
“Look at his leathery skin and his wrinkled face—that is what chronic exposure to ultraviolet light does to you,” Robinson told me. “He really needs to be looked over by somebody, to check for skin cancer.”
RFK Jr. may be the single best advertisement for why you shouldn't use tanning beds. Other than being the "crispy orange toned skin" creature and looking like death warmed over, tanning beds obviously lead to brain damage. OR is it the worms revenge. Having this guy as the HHS sec. is like having the grim reaper running the ER.

The footnote on melanoma treatment reminds me how an existing drug costing 25 cent per pill was discovered to be an effective treatment of melanoma, then suddenly cost $1,000 a pill. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/14/nx-s1-5397893/how-much-are-we-willing-to-pay-for-life-saving-medications
Can not wait until this half witted clown gets the boot. A disgrace.

Used tanning beds in my 20’s melanoma removed in my 40’s. Got lucky survived but beyond stupid sunburns tanning beds.
Look at RFK jr I wouldn’t take advice from him on where to buy chewing gum.
My cousin died at 29 from melanoma. He didn't have insurance to get it checked until it was too late.

Macavity, Macavity, He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity

It's possible that young people, who see what RFK Jr. looks like, may be discouraged from using tanning beds.
My Father died of metastatic skin cancer due to chronic UV light exposure. Not all light is benevolent.
Not so long ago, Helarium Tanning beds were used to treat mood problems like seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Lessons learned the hard way.
JFKJr's tan is as real as his psychopathology.
Whereas, Felon47's tan is as fake as his two presidencies.
Both men's skin will fill a chapter on derm-psych in virtual textbooks about the malevolent Dark Side of MAGA and MAHA.
Beware the shadows that taint our country now with deceit, greed, hubris and hatred.
