Wildly overplaying his hand as usual, the orange felon will see this backfire in Maricopa — the diverse, populous blue core of a state sick of Arpaio’s cruelty and Lake’s election fraud lies. Now that the border crisis has abated, this will rightly be regardless as a sequel to SB 1070 — racist cruelty akin to Prop 187 in CA back in the 90s, which proved to be the stake through the heart of the CA GOP for generations (and the foreseeable future). My Phoenix relatives are ready to fight this tooth and nail.
There is always hope. Thanks to the great info by a poster here, this monk is now also a member in the “To The Contrary” community.🙏
And, Charlie Sykes wrote the following in his article:
“This is where the distinction between optimism and hope comes in. As Rabbi Sacks repeatedly pointed out: “Optimism is the belief that the world is changing for the better; hope is the belief that, together, we can make the world better. Optimism is a passive virtue, hope an active one. It needs no courage to be an optimist, but it takes a great deal of courage to hope.”
So, please don’t be a pessimist, there is always hope.

We are all in this fight together. Wishing you all Peace,
I have always believed that IT can happen here. Now, today, as a resident of Maricopa county, I am realizing that IT will be happening here. The Trump regime, more than anything else, is demonstrating its dedication to the very un-American proposition that all people are NOT created equal. IT must be stopped. America will no longer be America if it is covered with concentration camps. The proposition that we are all created equal is the father of all of our moral values. Without it we are lost. Enough is enough. We must have an agenda of real and meaningful reform that can transform the next election into a referendum for Americanism.
I live in a very MAGA part of Maricopa County and still see the red hats every day. I’m curious to see how this goes over in Barry Goldwater’s home state
- a litmus test for which is a stronger impulse: resistance to government overreach or racism. People here do prioritize the economy over everything else, so I expect declining support.
As a resident of Tucson for 26 years, I think this will go over very badly, and turn this swing state solidly blue, especially if everyone fighting for democracy and the rule of law videos and publicizes the inevitable outrageous and illegal abuses that will occur constantly. Democracy will not save itself, and it did not create itself; Americans have to fight for it, just like we did 250 years ago.
I continue to be grateful for your reporting, and continue to be distressed that these abuses aren’t at the top of everyone’s mind all the time. I live in Columbus, Ohio, and a large force descended here a couple of weeks ago, snatching people off the street just blocks from where I live. The terror in the impacted communities is palpable. The surge force has gone, but people are still sheltering, afraid to go to work or send their children to school. As much as many at The Bulwark want to talk about the weakening administration (from their lips to God’s ears), the actions of this most terrifying, unaccountable agency tells another story.
I'm old enough to remember the Immigration reform efforts in the 80's. It's taken a long time to get where we are at. Rounding up and expelling 12 million people all of a sudden is stupid and impossible. For the longest time the Republicans were up to their eyeballs in looking the other way on "undocumented" people. Then just like the deficit and a lot of our other problems they get up one day and blame it on the Democrats. I mean there's 2 million illegals living and working in Texas, has been for 25 years and nobody there is doing much about that. The new element is the racial dynamic. The great replacement theory is animating the right wing now and into that bucket you pour crime or scarcity or voting fraud or whatever else you want to rub into the wounds of people in the dead end economy about 1/3 of the population is stuck in now.
In June 2015, Trump said the immigrants he wanted out were "rapists," "murderers," and "drug dealers" who had to be removed.
In 2021, Trump continued, claiming that "women are raped at levels that have never been seen before" at the border and that "rapists" and "murderers" were entering the U.S.
In October 2024, Trump claimed that among people allowed to come through an "open border" 13,000 were "murderers," and that he believes being a "murderer" is "in their genes."
This genetic, eugenic, claim is right from the German Nazi's playbook of the 1930s and 1940s, designed and intended to strengthen the conspiratorial Republican "replacement theory."
I see the militaristic ICE agents at the top of the article are wearing government issue gas masks rather than their silly balaclavas. Did Miller convince Trump to approve a shift to Zyklon B from tear gas?
Ironic that the bloated, gaseous, and profoundly hollow individual who is so revered by himself and who is actually a felon, fraud, tax evader, money launderer, rapist and sexual assaulter is calling others criminals and rapists. He's the one I'd like to see in one of those desert tents with dirty water, rotten food, and nothing but heat and sand.
Considering the ICE plans to build many more structures; and the techno-billionaires' plans for multiple AI centers in the Phoenix area, one question isn't being asked. Where will the zealots and planners get the water for all these new structures?
The American Southwest is in the midst of a multi-decade drought and the Colorado River is over-appropriated. Might be interesting to see ICE and its far right wing backers try to mess around with Western water law. Old saying out here: "whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting."
Joe Arpaio was my very first thought seeing this headline. AZ already said they don't want this type of dehumanizing garbage.

That is great to hear, I was hoping Phoenix would be like oh hell no!
I bought a pair of whistles.

Great reporting as always Adrian!
Thanks Brisa!
People are gonna die in soft-sided facilities. Phoenix went 113 days straight last year over 100 degrees.

🎩📜🇺🇸 “The Emergency Hat Trick”
In Washington town, where the marble walls gleam,
A President shouted, “I’ve got a BIG scheme!”
Not bills through the chambers, not votes, not debate—
He yanked a red lever and changed the whole gate.
He hollered “Emergency!” loud as a horn,
Again and again—new powers were born.
(Reports say nine new since January’s first day,
Plus old ones still active from back in the fray.)
Now emergencies—sure—can be handy and right
When storms hit at midnight or missiles take flight.
But when “crisis” is painted on regular stuff,
That’s when democracy’s guardrails get rough.
Then April rolled in with a show and a cheer:
“Liberation Day!” (with a tariff-y sneer).
He signed and he charged with a national-threat claim,
Though Congress has tariff power right in the frame.
And if Congress could challenge? Well, here’s the odd twist:
A rule got slid in with a sneaky-tight fist—
It said, for a while, days wouldn’t count as days,
So the “vote to end it” got trapped in a maze.
That’s “exception” talk—where the law gets bent,
So one loud decider can do what he meant.
Old theorist Schmitt (from a dark chapter’s school)
Said power shows up when you rewrite the rule.
And later the President bragged, bold and grand,
“I can do what I want—if danger’s at hand!”
That’s not how our founders designed the whole deal—
Democracy works when the checks are real.
So grandparents glow with the lantern-phone light,
We share what we learn—so the people stay bright.
Because “emergency” can’t be the everyday tune…
Or freedom gets swallowed by power-mad gloom. ✨🗽📣

The round-ups. The tent camps. The foul and inhumane conditions. Remind you of anything?
El Holocausto.

Draft dodging coward too, now taking military action to seize another country from someone just like himself. The irony is stunning.
