I am a dairy farmer in New York and involved in Democratic politics for some time. (One of the very few) I have been screaming at any politician who might listen. We all speak of the three very important swing States-- Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Each of those States are important dairy States. The coming election will probably be decided by less than 20,000 votes. Easily available from the dairy community in those States and the Dems will not get a single vote even from the few registered Democrats. There was a bill passed in the House on a bipartisan vote last year which would have allowed the sale of whole milk in schools. The bill went to the Senate Ag Committee and the Chairman of the Committee from the State of Michigan did not even let the Bill out of committee for a vote. The bill did not mandate or require that kids drink whole milk it simply would have given them a choice. My own Senator Gillibrand supports the bill as do a few other Democrats. But not the Senator from the State of Michigan, a major dairy State, who controls the future of the legislation. By the way, her reasoning has been that the committee that considers recommendations regarding Nutritional Guidelines for Americans has issues with whole milk. Let me state categorically that whole milk is still one of the most perfect foods and it can be spelled with but four letters. The present science supports the benefits of whole milk and let me say that supporting whole milk is both nutritionally sound as it has been for more than 10,000 years and politically a no brainer. Tried to reach out to both Stabenow's and Bob Casey's offices and of course my attempts were ignored. I am prepared to share the science with anyone who might listen.
As an aside, the original recommendations that resulted in removing whole milk from schools was based upon the the accurate observations of of nutritionists who rightly recognized that kids were fat and many obese. "Why not take the fat out of milk?" Well they did and what has happened? Kids are much more obese today and much less healthy. So it wasn't the full at milk after all which, by the way is quite low in fat anyway, containing only 3.25 percent far. In any case. Stabenow could have easily allowed the full Senate to have the opportunity to debate the issue. Her questionable decision may very well decide the next election. All over a glass of milk. You guys can continue to explore the esoteric reasons for the present state of politics in this nation, but i think its milk and what it represents.
