An example of media not pushing back on total BS GOP narratives: I was watching CNBC recently and they had Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on one of the morning programs, I think to discuss the state of the federal budget, the countdown to the latest potential shutdown, etc. The Republican insistence that some immigration reform be a mandatory part of any budget deal came up and Cornyn went into a brief diatribe about “Biden’s ‘open borders’ policy.” Can anyone show me Biden’s Open Borders Policy? No? Possibly because there is no such thing? This statement about Biden’s immigration policy - offered as FACT - went unchallenged. So anyone watching who is not paying attention (hard as that is) comes away thinking that BCP never turns anyone away who swims across the Rio Grande, hard data to the contrary be damned.

“Or maybe it’s as simple as:

(1) Treat the statements of political actors as if they are part of their permanent record. And then,

(2) Make it a priority to confront political actors every single time about their lies. Even the “little” lies.”

Great journalistic advice, JVL. I wish these rules were being observed when Stefanik kept referring to Jan 6th terrorists being hostages. Perhaps the interviewer was just too stunned by the stupidity of the commentary to know what to do in the moment, but the audience needed to hear the interviewer challenge her on this point by asking how someone indicted of a crime, tried before a jury of their peers, and found guilty could credibly be considered as being a ‘hostage’! This interview still wrangles with me weeks on because it annoys me how pernicious this stuff is, yet they still give these liars air time.

Thanks JVL
