Out of curiosity, can you explain why you bought into the entire thing that "Obama was going to take all our guns" thing. That has been said of every Democratic President and presidential candidate of my long lifetime, and yet it's never ever happened. What made you believe it - do you know? (Except in Beto's case, for the first time - it would have been true)...

I'm only asking because there are a lot of people who believe all of the hyperbole, and those are the ones we have to reach going forward, before today's GOP takes all of us to places we don't want our children and grandchildren having to deal with.

Well, part of it honestly was that up until a few years ago, I didn't CARE! I was a liberal in my 20's. I didn't grow up in the "gun culture." My dad (foolishly) kept a handgun stashed in the bedside table and my mother put the fear of God into me not to even THINK about picking it up! But I started listening to talk radio around 1998. Got older. Eventually became more conservative and after 2008 got involved with the local Republican party. Kept getting invites to fundraisers at the local gun range and was just too embarrassed to admit that I'd never fired a gun before! So, I had a friend take me to the range and give me a couple of lessons. Wanted my own firearm so that I wouldn't look like a rookie at the next fundraiser. (Also had a public run in with one of the local whackos with a reputation for stalking women and thought I'd better get a gun. Pronto. Which was stupid. Like I'm going to carry it every time I take out the recycling?) And with the inevitable 2nd Clinton administration on the horizon, I CLEARLY needed to act soon while I still could. My next door neighbor did the same thing. Actually bought the same model I did. And his gun is likewise still sitting in the original box. Never loaded. Never fired. We joke about how we both feel like chumps.

Wow! Thanks for the honesty. I'm not sure if that applies to a wide range of people who subscribe to the same fear that the Democrats are going to take their guns away, but it is illuminating to hear your story. Poll after poll tell us that a huge majority of both gun-owners and non-gun-owners are in favor of universal background checks, and other "common-sense" measures, but it never seems to translate into who they vote for, as other issues rank higher in importance to them, I suppose.

I was just trying to understand, thinking it might show a way forward.... Thanks again for taking the time to answer me!
