“Never before has an audience been kept on the edge of their seat by the image of an old woman walking across a high school campus”- I know it’s a reference to It Follows, not End of Oak Street but,boy howdy we just watched the Sea Hag episode of Widows Bay and THAT old woman walking down the street def kept us on the edge of our seat (well, couch) with our blankets stuffed fully in our mouths. Glad to hear no dogs were hurt, but what about corporate lawyers?
There was a Doctor Who episode in the last season that had a similar plot device (creepy woman always coming nearer). It's very effective when done well.
The Sea Hag gave me the biggest laugh of the entire series, but yes,creepy as hell.
Its a shame the review is so encouraging and favorable. I hate Anne Hathaway and cannot bear to watch any movie she may be in. Just hearing her voice at a distance makes me instinctively tense up. (Sorry. I had to get that off my chest. Just ignore me and go on with your day ;)
I just watched it. I’m not sure I’d say it’s a good film, but I’d rather have been watching it than say, your average unimaginative drek action film. It is trying to do something a bit different- the dinosaurs aren’t really the point, the point is a story about a family.
I wonder how many people though will either see ‘dinosaur movie!’ or the trailer and go along expecting something different. In front of me were people with a young kid who I rather suspect had gone along expecting Jurassic park. (Mind it’s so hot here that a non small percentage of the audience were probably just there for the air con, which alas in that screen wasn’t working v well so oops:)
All three of these hyperreality movies were made with a waiting audience and is the avoidance of our current reality. Easier to see a "horror genre" movie or a cartoon movie rather than see films constructed in our reality which is horror enough. Same for The Odyssey, except it's closer to our human reality than the others. Still, I would like to see one great movie grounded in 21st-century reality.
There were some parts of this movie (one in particular) where I just thought “well I’ve definitely never seen that before in a movie and probably never will again.” So for that alone, worth it?

Be that as it may, your writing is engaging and immediate. Sometimes it feels like you're hashing things out as we read you, and it's very enjoyable.
