The Capitol Police are most deserving of the honors they are receiving and credit for not escalating the violence. But in lavishing praise, you neglect to mention that the crowd was predominantly white. This also brings to mind the incident at the Michigan Capitol in April 2020, which ended without bloodshed in spite of many protestors…

It may not fit the feel-good narrative, and Lord knows I love you for bringing the dark, but if you're going to mention Eric Garner, George Floyd, et al., as you did, you cannot then fail to mention that another thing they have in common is the color of their skin. If we were talking about BLM protestors on Jan 6 they would have never made it up the steps, and everyone knows it. This need not be the focal point, but it cannot be left out altogether either.
Yeah…I had that thought as well. BTW if you haven’t read Officer Fanone’s “Hold the Line”, you definitely should. He doesn’t shy away from talking about the complicated issues surrounding law enforcement and race through both a personal and objective lens.
I remember watching Jan 6 on the day and remarking how different it would have been had it been a BLM demonstration. And I can’t help but remark now how different the right’s reaction would have been in reaction to what I assume might have been a VERY tragic day all around. Those officers did handle themselves professionally that day. We can hope and wonder what that alternative history would have been

That was my first thought as well, thanks for posting.

Thanks for reminding us of this, Drew. I had this same thought as I was reading about this award ceremony.

It goes without saying, but thanks for saying it.
