Journalists are supposed to be objective and observant and their job is to report on important events and trends without editorializing. Opinions are only supposed to be expressed by columnists and letters to the editor. They also need stuff to write about or broadcast and the easiest way to generate content is to repeat and recycle the same themes over and over again. I also think that there is a lot of sensitivity within the mainstream media to being accused of having a liberal bias. It seems that the New York Times is going out of its way to prove that they're 'objective' and not 'biased' by normalizing Trump and his supporters.
