I believe that the border is where to enforce immigration law, including law regarding asylum. If the apparatus in place to do that has looked the other way such that people have been able to work for decades producing our food, building our homes, re-roofing our houses, then there should be something like common law citizenship for them.

TomD - man, that term seems like it would make sense to people, something the average person can understand. Like common law marriage, sort of the same as other marriages but without the piece of paper from the state.
I agree, common law citizenship has a great ring to it and I could see a lot of people getting behind that, changing the rhetoric from amnesty that has been so damaging and so ill used by the Republicans.

Another option would be to just issue work permits and allow people to apply for citizenship, or not, as they choose. No special path required.
тАЬCommon law citizenshipтАЭ is a really intriguing term- much better than amnesty!
I could see that getting traction, if we manage to get through the crazy times.
