The sadism of these thugs is disgustingly. This is an emergency. This is not business as usual. This is cruel and unusual and Congress needs to stand up and stop the madness. Trump’s numbers are tanking and he is a cornered rat. No more getting along with the White House terrorists who are currently running America into the ground. This is all about projection and lies, lies, lies.
El Tapatio in Willmar MN is one of my favorite restaurants, and the people are so nice there. This is heartbreaking to many of us in town. Even our local Republican state senator spoke against it. What baffles me is the number of people who believed the "worst of the worst" line. Criminals are hard to find; waiters, cooks and high school kids are much easier.
You guys prob know by now this is happening but I think even a lot of media people weren't aware bc it's just the Dems. But they're the goooood Dems. This hearing snuck up on everyone it's not official (they can't subpoena anyone bc it's just Dems) but they're the right Dems for the moment. It's live but you can watch on YT later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcDRbIMJ0L4
"It is my Great Honor to announce that THE BOARD OF PEACE has been formed. The Members of the Board will be announced shortly, but I can say with certainty that it is the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place. Thank you for your attention
I like the footnote to this column. I watched The Twilight Zone in reruns 40+ years ago; don't recall that episode, but I have thought we are overdue for a movie that centers on a grade-schooler who acts like Trump in that environment. I used to thank that could be a powerful way to help Trump voters make some connections and to rethink their support of their Dear Leader, but these days, I doubt it.
I have to disagree with the comments that Democrats have been silent or complicit. Many have been speaking up, but the reality is that, thanks to the voters, they have no real power. The real power is in the hands of Congressional Republicans who (except for a very few) seem to be just fine with Trump's policies (except when it has to do with the Fed). So I am directing my anger toward the Republicans for continuing to allow Trump to destroy the country!
Also, Andrew, thanks for the Twilight Zone reference. I have used that example many times in describing Trump - an angry little boy who takes out his tantrums on everyone around him.
I have frequently compared Trump to the little boy, portrayed so frighteningly by Billy Mumy, who wished people who displeased him away to "the cornfield."
It's almost unbearable to read The Bulwark these days; the events and actions by the president are soul-crushing and mind-numbing. As we find ourselves angered and begging for push back, i watch in horror as the democratic leadership appear almost unbothered by it all.
Sorry, but good old two-buck Chuck Schumer (my apologies to Trader Joe's) has shown almost nothing in the way of fighting back. In fact, it appears to be little more than business as usual.
Have a great week off Chuck, perhaps you can spend some time crafting even more strongly worded letters.
It's getting that way. Sorry Bulwark, that you are TOO good at what you do, but yeah, these times, and accurate reporting and commentary on them, is starting to grind me down. But then I thank my lucky stars that I'm not in Ukraine or Gaza. But still, it's bad. I had to stop listening to The Warning with Steve Schmidt. When he lays things out, it can be unsettling.
It's hilarious that while Machado was sucking up to Trump, at the same time, the CIA Director Ratfcliffe had travelled to Caracas at Trump's direction, and was meeting with the current President Rodriguez "to deliver the message that the United States looks forward to an improved working relationship".
Machado has lost her dignity and her Nobel Prize medal and got absolutely nothing in return.
There is no way that Machado's prize medal could ever compete in value to the billions of dollars in oil that the current Venezuelan government has agreed to hand-over to Trump, for his personal slush fund.
Machado should have been intelligent enough to understand that Trump is a snake and a gangster, and loves dictators, and therefore imploring him to bring about genuine regime-change in Venezuela for the sake of "democratic ideals" is a complete waste of time.
Have a congressman make a speech ahead of time. Yes to tell the world and other congressmen that Trump would prefer for one of the ICE agents to be maimed or killed than a protestor. Why, so he can call out the militia. Killing someone like Ms. Good was bad but not the reason that Trump needs. Tell your brethren in Congress that this is definitely what TRUMP WANTS. And if it happens that Trump must be kept from calling on Militia because HE TRUMP has INCITED the RIOT. INCITING VIOLENCE is a CRIME and Trump repeatedly is doing the crime openly. If you call out what Trump is planning it just might keep him from doing the crime. Tell congress he has two reasons to have one of his agents killed: 1. So he can immediatly call out militia to Minneapolis. and then to have Militia monitor elections. and 2. So no one will even mention the word EPSTEIN again. (HE know that in the 5 million files/papers/videos etc. there is evidence that he did rape that 13 year old) He will do everything illegal/criminal to keep that from ever happening. Democratic congressmen should make that speech so people know what he is doing ahead of time. Then when it happens people can turn against TRUMP and not the innocent.
Bill, I don't always agree with you but you are correct on this. Democrats in the House and Senate, get off your overpaid asses and start pushing back. This is not the time to go along and if you want to retake the Congress, this is not how you do it.
(1) 40% approve! That's horrifying! The spin here is nice, but, man....
(2) The "research ranking" thing reported by the Times is a farce. The ranking is about "number of publications," not relevance or quality. Researchers at the listed Chinese universities pump out huge reams of junk that gets published in obscure journals, many of which are pay for play. Increasingly, these publication factories are using AI to generate work product. The peer review process for this kind of thing doesn't work. So this ranking doesn't signify anything meaningful at all.

Many of them were recruited from MAGA wanna be big shots. If they were truly ICE agents they would have ID on their chest and masks in their pockets.
This whole thing is BS right down to the murder they committed, and Congress nods!
I write the speaker continually.

Next stop...the Twilight Zone.

Call your Senators. Tell them not a dime in continued ICE funding (1/30) unless they're reined in:
Restrict ICE and Border Patrol’s dragnet and arrest operations
Stop the targeting of people based on their race, language or accent, place of employment, or location
Stop Border Patrol deployment to our cities and stop its expansion in immigration enforcement
Limit DHS's reprogramming and transfer authority
Stop funds for reprogramming and transferring detention
Plus: no masks, badges required, warrants required, violent agents removed from service
Call now. Call every day from now until 1/30.

huzzah!
Everyone should read Stephen Richer's open letter: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/governor-polis-do-not-pardon-tina-peters. Don't know if this is a Bulwark exclusive, but glad it's here. I had no idea Polis was considering pardoning Peters.
Now it's not only how low can MAGA go; it's how low can all those bowing down to him go?
