Hey, I had a lot of fun watching those slasher pics lol 😂 But seriously I agree with you about "Us" and I cannot recommend "Sinners" highly enough. Horror is a fascinating genre and I'm here for it.
The slashers are great! I cut a couple of lines about this for space reasons, but one reason all the intellectualization of horror movies is so so funny/annoying (depending on your POV) is that the only real mark of whether or not a horror movie is good is if it’s fun/scary. Does it make you gasp at the right moments or roll your eyes? And there’s *so much* eye rolling in a lot of Op-Ed Horror.
Kind of hard to believe you didn’t include Guillermo del Toro’s movies as examples of op-ed horror, especially the Devil’s Backbone, the Shape of Water, and Pan’s Labyrinth.
Well … I think they clearly have an ideological heft to them, but they don’t really meet the Vox rule I lay out in that footnote. (THE SHAPE OF WATER is closest, particularly in that diner scene, and also probably the worst. PAN’S LABYRINTH is more a Horror Fairy Tale than Op-Ed Horror, and is brilliant.)
