The Story Is The Mission
When I came to The Bulwark last year, I had an idea. I wanted to write a story about what happened to the Republican party in the Trump years. And I wanted to tell that story through the evolution of one man: Lindsey Graham.
But it was going to take a long time. I needed to research everything Graham had said for seven years. I needed to find every interview, every article, every social media post. And then I needed to put it all together.
They said yes, go ahead. Do it.
This year, we completed that project, The Corruption of Lindsey Graham, as seven articles with an epilogue. The e-book version runs about 30,000 words. We also made it into a serial podcast. It attempts to explain, through Graham’s story, how authoritarianism arose in the United States—and how it could return if we don’t recognize the warning signs.
The opportunity to spend the time researching, writing and narrating this cautionary tale was made possible because of tens of thousands of Bulwark+ members.
