This is precisely one of those moments, JVL, where you've often said the Democrats/Biden have to place perfect baseball and never make a single mistake, lest the GOP win. Last night was a really big mistake. There's no word to describe the asymmetry at play here.

Maybe the USA isn't a country worth saving. Maybe we have become too decadent as a people to be worthy. But dammit, I live here. As does my wife and my son. I may not be worthy, but they are. And so are millions of other little kids who deserve to grow up in stability. If we throw our system away- for no god damned good reason- the United States of America will likely become history's greatest unforced tragedy.

Today’s The Rest is Politics podcast with Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart today was a sobering reminder of how this is playing internationally. They both called on Biden to step aside, and Campbell is a strong leftie. It’s been a very sobering day. I’m feeling despondent and hoping this community will help me come to terms with it. Biden is here in Raleigh today and apparently did well, but he whiffed on a stage he insisted on. Man, this is tough. The fight is now that much harder.

The problem with him doing well in NC is how many people see that versus how many saw last night. Sure, everyone can have a bad night, but Biden doesn't seem to have lots of highly visible "good nights" to fall back on.

and Age doesn't reverse. The probability of slack-jawed, staring into space with a puzzled expression moments will only increase from here

That, and the speech in NC was a teleprompter prepared speech, which is qualitatively different from a debate and far easier to do well in.

The good thing is that this happened now. If this were mid-October, I'd say we were toast. But it's mid-summer now. There's still time.

If we're down by 7, I'd much rather have a fumble happen at the start of the fourth quarter, than in the final couple minutes.

We are actually not down by 7, we are ahead by 2. Our quarterback is injured but their quarterback throws lots of interceptions, and then blames the receivers. We have a great rest of the team and a very strong defense, but we have to use everyone on the field, and we have to play as a team, quit second guessing the coach, and keep focused. The opposition is erratic and often plays dirty. They also have the refs paid off so we have to push back hard.

Alright! Huddle. Go Democracy!!

This. I always think “is it hubris that makes JVL fine with it all going down in flames, or does he have some backup plan and can we get in on it?” 😂

I'm not fine with it! I'd prefer it not to!

Damn! I was hoping you had a way to escape the madness and perhaps could be bribed. Gotta stay here and keep talking to these people.

FWIW, that was clear to me.

I've considered the possibility of jumping ship if the worst happens. Then, I look around at the rest of the developed world and I realize that nearly every "safe haven" is floundering like a fish out of water. Canada and the UK's economy is awful. Mainland Europe is flirting with the far right themselves. And the cost of living in AUS/NZ is insane.

For all that's going on, the US is still arguably doing the best among our peers factoring in all the quadrants. It's for this reason that the specter of Trump regaining power is so baffling; America is already pretty forking great!

If America joins the club of authoritarian countries, the remaining liberal democracies won't hold out long against the pressure of a US, Russia, Saudi and China political and financial alliance.

We need to stand fast because there'll be no hiding places
