I just glanced through the review for Dead man’s Wite but don’t see where it mentioned that it’s based on a true story. I heard it as a podcast with Jon Hamm. Most excellent.

Just ordered "Blank Space" from Bookshop.org. I loathe about 75% of poptimism (depending on how you define it) and think about these topics a lot, so I'm excited to dig in.

I wonder whether the lack of artistic innovation and interest in what we see is one reason for the apparent rise in participation. I'm surrounded by people doing art of some sort, and one thing the technology has made easy is on-line courses, sharing art, creating art communities, etc. And I think in some communities - basketry for example - there is a lot of innovation and it isn't all conformity with what's popular on Instagram right now. I'm seeing artists with distinctive voices, doing their own thing really well.

The humor in "Dead Man’s Wire" sounds comparable to the dark humor in last year's "Caught Stealing."

Where there is no value other than money, honor is meaningless; and where there is no honor, there cannot be shame. And without shame, infamy and esteem become indistinguishable.” Such a perfect description of our society and politics, for sure. I am on the library waitlist for this book. I hope it will be as enlightening as it is depressing.

Maybe social media will become known as something between an-admitted-waste-of-time and a cesspool. I am impressed at how quickly schools are banning smartphones.

From my viewpoint this Christmas, the hot gift for parents to their elementary school kids was a phone that could call other phones of the same make. No internet. Parents in a neighborhood would get these for their kids.

Yesterday I saw a terrific children's production of The Lion King. The director in her opening spiel said, "Let's get the kids off their screens and into play-making." Just a start, but I think the world is catching on.
