I look forward to the day when the WaPo can be resurrected as the once great institution it used to be. Before Bezos. And also, bite me Bari Weiss - you aint no liberal. NOPE! And also, long live the Bulwark. Love you all!
I was a reader of the post for years but after it kept killing stories or columns that might anger President Manbaby I had to look elsewhere. I was able to get a free year of the times recently and I'm certainly not a fan of the mealy mouth approach they have been using to couch all the extremism coming from the trump regime in the last few years. I've been keeping an eye out for that to see how or if they can rise to the moment but I'm not holding my breath. They think there Switzerland but come across more like Neville Chamberlain.
The Bulwark targets a limited audience - mostly people who think like me. Is there a way to expand that audience without pandering? Without bothsidesism?
Do the guys at The Dispatch read you, JVL? Does Damon Linker read you? These, and many like them insist on playing the ostrich on the question of why any and every journalistic intervention in this precarious cultural moment in the US, must plainly and unapologetically side with liberalism.
Or with the authoritarian project of DJT and his co-travellers.
That is it. There is no middle ground.
I find their obfuscation and watery rationalisations about why they are fence sitters to be most idiotic and embarrassing all at once. The Liberal Order of democracy in the once-upon-a-time mighty USA has been lit ablaze. Some of us can see the fireball from tens of thousands of kilometers away in Africa. And it is not a pretty sight. Not one bit.
Decadence and wishful thinking are a dangerous combination, and many of the US media elite are having a suffeit of it at the moment.
Calamity and tragedy are but a short distance away, but it is a joy to know that The Bulwark team, alongside many others I believe, is in the vanguard.
Just got to say that I love what you guys do, and despite my disagreements with you all, I am happy to keep paying you because of one thing first and foremost: You are fully transparent and honest with your audience.
As a subscriber, I'm still not sure as to how the Bulwark stays afloat. Yes, there is a nominal subscription fee and there are some ads. But much of the content from the Bulwark is free for all to view, the ads are few, the subscription cost is low, and yet, every year the Bulwark has more and more seasoned and respected journalists who join the team. How the Bulwark has thrived rather than be consumed by enshittification is beyond me. Well, however you guys are doing it, keep up the good work and thank you.
Excellent analysis of the printed press downfall. As always it has to do with ...... wait for it..... money.
Newspapers could afford to be critical of the establishment when the facts demanded it (and do not give me that liberal media bias nonsense; the media used to be biased because a lot of the awful stuff is done by people with the money, and it so happens that they are usually on the side that does not want to pay taxes). But in today's environment they do not want to lose out on clickbait, for which they think they need access to the powers that be. So they caved counting on the fact that most people do not want to pay for solid reporting.
To the Bulwark (and Substack app) please allow me to heart react this glorious post eleventy-million times. Thank you for your attention to this matter. ;-)
For a more grown-up take on the question of Bari Weiss taking over at CBS (as opposed to the unfortunately-titled "We Drink Their Milkshake"), I recommend Caitlin Flanagan's article in this week's The Atlantic.
Thank you JVL, Sarah, Tim, Sam, Bill and everyone at the Bulwark. I look forward to your content everyday, and am sometimes lost on the weekends. Keep up the good fight, goodness knows that the fly larvae will keep up their lies and deceptions

They're now down to $30 for a year. Not remotely interested.
We love you JvL
I like Catherine and I also like Bari. Don't agree with either all the time. That's fine. Also don't always agree with The Bulwark.

Amen.
"when the time comes for everyone to take their stand"
when the time comes? it came years ago.
In Short: the Bulwark is Citizen Kane-less Journalism. Keep it up guys!!

Wonderful news for all of us that Catherine Rampell is joining. Congrats to everyone, esp us readers and viewers. Cheers!
