omfg: catherine rampell! fantastic!

excellent piece: to think that the network of walter cronkite is now the network of bari weiss. i've said it here before but it's worth repeating: when my parents, like all jewish parents of baby boomers, told me "it can happen here," i somehow didn't grasp they meant during my lifetime.

"At the end of the day, I think this is why the New York Times has been so reluctant to declare itself on the side of democracy. It never had to in the past, and so can’t imagine why it would need to now."

Whenever I see someone making a decision based on money - like Jeff Bezos and David Ellison - the people making decisions based on money are clearly making those decisions based on what time it is. They are fully aware that the incentives run towards appeasing authoritarians, because authoritarians will punish them for saying true things about the authoritarians and liberals will not punish them for saying false things about the liberals.

When they are asked to account for these decisions in public, to explain why they made them, they resolutely and emphatically insist that they have absolutely no idea what time it is. Democracy is 'just another issue' to be debated between Trump and Kamala Harris; whether or not our entire profession is to be thrown in jail is an amusing debate topic that we should be fair to both sides of. The New York Times insists that were they to oppose authoritarianism, that would be exactly the same as being a Democratic media outlet; and the New York Times assumes that we'll all agree that it would be better for the New York Times not to oppose authoritarianism, then.

I'm not fooled. And I know you aren't fooled, JVL. It's time to stop acting like they're fooling anyone else.
