Maybe this is a new model for funding gov services. Revise federal tax rates down to cover things like trade, defense, research and global affairs only. Adjust state taxes to cover everything that pertains to quality of life.
I, as a longtime liberal, have wondered for 10+ years if this might actually be the model that America needs. I live in NM, a blue state that now covers college tuition and daycare costs for all residents.
Suppose all the blue states moved in those directions, and gradually became known nationally as far better places to live. More state taxes and less federal taxes might make that doable. (Of course the giant spending on more military is insane and would still need to be vigorously opposed in D.C.)
I can imagine, over time, it becoming obvious that red states were primitive places to live, with crappy safety nets and class bitterness. The more stark the comparison, maybe the sooner red state citizens would believe that smart liberal social policies actually can work here - not just in Europe.
And then you will see a chasm between red states and blue states like you can’t believe. When red states received money from the lawsuits against Big Tobacco they gave it back to farmers and Big Tobacco as grants to continue their good work.

If memory serves, Eric Edelman and Eliot Cohen of The Bulwark have advocated a 50% increase in the Pentagon budget (slightly larger than Trump's request) although whether and how their specific priorities differ from Donald's, I don't recall.
In any case, it's ridiculous to blame America's $40 trillion debt and $80 trillion in unfunded liabilities on the US military. The Left (and the alt Right) may be willing openly to scapegoat national defense (not to mention US global commitments), but it figures Trump would simply be too lazy to make a coherent public case for either guns or butter or... buttered guns.
What he's doing is (ironically) reciting the conservative (ie Reaganite) tenet that the federal government's first obligation is national defense while ignoring the better part of a century most American politicians have spent qualifying that precept.

I believe the total ask is 1.5 trillion, not the increase. The increase would be about 500 billion. Your point stands but accuracy is important.
