Tim Miller joins Scott Galloway as a guest host on Raging Moderates. They unpack how Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs and trade war have pushed the U.S.
Walmart has come out and said they are going to be raising their prices to accommodate for the tariffs.
Trump has gone after Walmart and told them that they need to
“ eat the tariffs”
By saying this, Trump is acknowledging that tariffs are not additional income for our government, but are actually expenses and taxes passed on to consumers and ordinary Americans affecting their lives tremendously .
It is the truth versus the gaslighting that he has been doing, and all of them have been doing about tariffs .
It doesn’t matter how much gaslighting they do. It does not change the fact that tariffs are passed on to the American consumer and hurts ordinary Americans.
This is what happens when the culture wars become the most important thing in politics. A major political party allowed itself to succumb to the one of the worst people to ever run for president and we are all paying for it. Because brown people are bad and evangelicals forgot what christianity really means.
Every time someone calls the tariffs a sales tax I think of all the flack Kamala Harris got for calling it a sales tax. We collectively have such a vomit-inducingly grotesque double standard.
I think American citizens have gotten somewhat used to Trump as a politicians and to his Trumpian ways but for citizens around the world (even conservative ones), he looks simply insane so compared to a madman, they may prefer a serious leader even if from undemocratic China
One key to understanding Trump: He hates all impersonal institutions, such as rules, markets, and multilateral treaties/alliances. He wants to personalize everything. He is convinced that if he can get one human on the other side of the table from him, he will always "win" the negotiation. No matter how many times he loses, his self-image as a winner is not subject to revision.
Trump gets an immediate short-term personal buzz from insulting our allies and trading partners, from slapping tariffs on them, from threatening them in various ways (as he has openly threatened Greenland w invasion for God’s sake, bc “we need it”???).
His more rabid supporters also get a kind of anger and aggression buzz out of these antics, again short term.
What neither Trump nor his base understand is the long-term, real world effects of these antics.
He has torched our reputation as a dependable ally and trading partner. He has forced other countries, as Tim and Prof G relate here, to circumvent the U.S. in terms of security and market alliances.
We have barely begun to feel the effects of make America isolated again, but the shockwaves are coming.
Trump will never admit to his massive mistakes here. But even his most rabid supporters could peel off, as America vs. the World starts to rear its lonely, ugly head.
Trump's biggest pro-China move came at the start of his first term, when he withdrew the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP was designed as an anti-China trade alliance. By abandoning it, Trump gave China a much stronger hand in its efforts to dominate Asia.
Many thanks to Tim & The Bulwark for this discussion - Scott Galloway's perspective on this kind of issue (US global economic hegemony vis-a-vis the growing hegemonic power of China) is greatly appreciated. Good discussion. Now tell us which stocks to buy... (ha - just kidding - no one can predict that with useful accuracy... ha... I mean, unless you know something... and if you do, you know, totally confidential... I mean, I'm just sitting right here
I love Scott Galloway!
What an excellent guest to have .
I am listening to this on Sunday, May 18

Watched the full ep on the Prof G feed. Great convo. I really liked the part at the end where Scott asks you about the "Tim Miller origin story."
Don't start a war you can't win!
Great discussion, have subscribed to Prof G as well.
Because Trump is stupid?

Scott's sum up of you Tim, is spot on, you are amazing, fantastic show. More collaboration please.

I love how he clearly explains it all.
China will be the 21st century super power, eclipsing the US on the world stage by diminishing our influence, and it is Trump who made that happen.
