Great read. It’s so upsetting to me knowing how we’re ruining all of our credibility with our European brothers and sisters. France helped us win the Revolution, we helped them on D-Day. I hope one day this relationship will repair itself but that will probably take a generation as opposed to an administration change.

Pete Hegseth is a Nazi, so I would expect him to take the Nazi side at a D-Day celebration.

I am deeply honored to be heir to the true patriotism of those heroes, those who fought for the freedom of liberal democracy.

As Gen. Wesley Clark said, there's nothing wrong with being a liberal. We live in a liberal democracy.

The fascists are just nomads wandering in a hostile landscape.

The U.S. economy and industry provided the means, along with the blood of U.S. and Allied soldiers, airmen, and sailors, to destroy the Nazi-led Axis and establish the bulwark that contained post-war Soviet expansion in western Europe. Post-war U.S. policy and programs were the antithesis of colonialism; they instead supported the reestablishment of European nations in their own right, not as U.S. colonies.

It's redundantly trite to point out that Hegseth is a fool and that Trump and his Administration have betrayed and usurped our Constitution, our principles, and our history.

Impeachment is the answer, followed immediately by a national Reconstruction to restore our Constitution and its institutions.

A great article, but I think it is important to emphasize that the Normandy Campaign was an Allied victory, not just an American one. That was the first thing our historian said to us when I went on WWII tour there last year. We spent as much time visiting the British, Canadian and Polish battlefields and cemeteries as we did the American ones (and while we did not spend as much time on the French forces , they were a big part of the campaign too). Yes, we celebrate America today on the 4th of July, but given how this would-be authoritarian regime consistently insults and disparages our NATO allies, it is more important than ever that Americans understand the significant contributions and sacrifices that they have made in the past, fighting alongside us.

Merci, Monsieur Lecaque, for those wise and soothing words. I also grew up in a household where my British father (who fought in WWII) and Belgian mother (who lived under German occupation) constantly reminded us that "were it not for the Americans, we would be living under the nazi boot". I have visited the American cemeteries in Normandy and the War Memorial in Bastogne which are tributes to the sacrifice of all those heroic American soldiers on D-Day and after, and a reminder of the horrors of that terrible WWII.

I am also beyond sad and angry to witness the revival of far-right fascist ideologies in Europe and, as unthinkable as it is, the United States. It seems WWII is now a vanished memory in the minds of many who support nationalism over patriotism, authoritarianism over freedom.

I sincerely hope this 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence reminds all Americans that "the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; the consent of the governed; and resistance to tyranny" were given to them to be cherished and protected.

Beautifully said.

Thank you. I'm a bit puzzled by your seeming to imply that America alone carried out D-Day. I am sure you know that the British and Canadians did more. Otherwise, great article.

Very much so--in this case trying to make an internal American argument, but the British, Canadian, and Free French forces at 3 of the 5 beaches are all heroes of the highest order.

Thank you. The Nazis were, and still are evil.

Here is a little bit of optimism for the holiday. A reminder of the vision and promise we cherish. Here is our little animated appreciation of that wonderful legacy we share, just ahead of the holidays. Please feel free to use and share it as you wish. Thanks for all your work!
