I'm struck by that quote Jonathan Cohn ended with: "“None of my colleagues want to go back to work for the government. Or if they do, they don’t want to do the same work."

I'm hearing that myself informally from people I know, and it just leaves me sad. I can't blame them, though. We're not a good place to build a career these days if you're smart and lucky enough to have options.

The objective is false equivalence, as they try to normalize and encourage actual political violence on the right. Don’t give them oxygen. Keep the ridicule coming. And vote, strategically and decisively in 2026.

One of the things you learn in business is "you get what you measure". This is why it is extremely important to choose your metrics carefully as they will drive the behavior of both the organization and individuals in the organization. My question is what are the metrics that define success in the various government agencies enforcing immigration policy? On the surface it appears that the primary metric is how many people you detain regardless of the justification for that detainment. Without properly defined and measured metrics you get bad behavior and poor results. A classic example of using a bad metric was our use of body count during the Vietnam war. We counted the wrong things and it did not help us make the right decisions in military policy. It would be great if an enterprising investigative reporter would dig into the metrics used by ICE to reward it management and compensate its employees. It might help us understand what is driving the current approach to enforcement versus one that is a rational and humane.

Only a few months ago, a guy in a truck passed my local Hands Off protest and yelled, "Y'all gon' be sorry when Trump comes and takes you all away!"

Thank you, Bill. Nicely composed, even if none of us feels composed; there’s hope and strength in your words.

Yes, some of MAGA are boomers. But so are many of the No Kings protestors. Today's Triad comments section is full of them!

I live in Portland. The history of Antifa from a longtime local: My impression is "they" were folks that stood up against skinheads and the proud boys and their ilk. During the 2020 protests, I feel there were far right thugs who instigated violence and mayhem in order to create a false narrative that this was antifa. No doubt there was also a contingent of regular looters that joined in.

I am concerned that that type of outside agitation may occur on the 18th. In addition to any governmental shenanigans.

I've always rejected the antifa label because in Portland it was more associated with anarchists who did some real damage to our city back in 2020. But now that Trump and that twat Kristi Noem want to label anyone who doesn't support them as Antifa, I wonder if we should embrace the label. If 10 million people are running around with Antifa shirts and buttons, can the arrest us all? No. Pushback works.

They intend to send us to their gulags— and they will. And your neighbors will cheer if they are on board and otherwise see and say nothing.

Insurrection act coming. Rick Wilson is even more right than JVL. They can’t survive, much less prevail, under a rule of law— so they have no choice— prevail or perish.

Trump and his cronies are filled with hate and fear. They live in an imaginary world of paranoid victim hood despite their wealth and privilege. There is no way I’m going to be bullied by these creeps. Tomorrow I’ll make my sign. it will be simple. Black paint on a white poster board that states, “I’m showing up for those who can’t.” I’ve had a it.

I understand the Trump administration is looking at shutting down a Cava restaurant because they failed a sting operation where Tom Homan was posing as a Federal Official clearly accepting $50K in cash in a Cava bag and not one of the Cava managers became suspicious and/or notified the authorities.

It’s hard for me to believe that reasonable people still treat this Ferengi (arcane Star Trek Next Gen reference) administration as normal. Is it Kavanaugh naivety or the inability of some (many?) on the right to admit that they may have made a mistake? I read a Rich Lowrey opinion piece that posited we wouldn’t have any troop deployment in blue cities if we just supported ICE doing its job. We have appeals court judges saying local courts need to show “deference” to the administration in deploying resources. Sure, let’s just do that. No doubt this act of comity will be returned in kind by President Miller. Sorry, Trump (easy mistake)

The Ferengi would run it better. But I have long thought that there is a significant portion of the right made up of Ferengi who think they are Klingons.
