Not sure how to get a message to Brother Miller, but he probably doesn't want to be out here re-stacking Hanania, even if he's a Bulwark fan. Just putting it out there.

Anyone out there remember learning about"cognitive dissonance" ? I think it applies to all the fine people out there who keep holding on to their commitment to Trump in spite of everything going on.

See if you agree: https://www.simplypsychology.org/cognitive-dissonance.html

Tim's interviews suggest that, inside the cult, the efforts to maintain "cognitive consistency" are reaching new highs. Maybe Trump will pull a Jim Jones on all of them .... when the verdicts are announced.

This is depressing!

“A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.”

-Bob Dylan

Unfortunately, the MAGA’s “hero,” does not grasp this concept, nor do many of the minions who serve him.

There we were in a cigar bar of downtown Omaha, glasses half full of favorite intoxications. When a friend of a friend begins to speak of his support for Trump. My friend rolls his eyes and escapes from the conversation with a fading voice, “you can’t tell Ryan nothing, he knows everything”. I had not even begun to speak or push back against his friend Mike’s words. He started with a school ran by Oprah Winfrey and its school of 200 disappearing girls. He attempted to school me on the original four families of illuminate. Since I was of a decade older and had first heard this conspiracy back in 2008. I listed off Rothchilds before he could finish. I allowed him to continue as he weaved it all together with a doctor that cured aids suppressed by pharmaceutical companies and murdered. It’s obviously conclusion was a Democratic Party ran by baby blood drinking pedophiles. I did push back against all of it. I first requested the articles he was reading and entertained his fancies. As I began to read his Supreme Court document that was evidence of a doctor that cured aids in 2016 but was murdered. I noted that the Supreme Court case in question was tagged as a case from 1922. Did this mean that the doctor was 130 and also, since the big 4 Pharma companies were not a thing back then, did they time travel? He began to question the sources for my logic and try to turn tables upon my lack of evidence that proved him wrong. I replied, “just because I cannot prove something false doesn’t make it true”. The scariest part of all of this. In the end and willing to die upon is own sword of logic. He exclaimed, “I support Trump and I know he’s a racist and I’m black”. The only true statement he made because the rest was exactly what Charlie wrote about today. It was all bullshit. But they want the bullshit. They need the bullshit. The bullshit makes them feel connected, alive, attached and its effortless and meaningless. Which is how 80% of the kids in my wealthy public school attended to their education back in the 90s. Vivek wants a civics test to those of voting age that most will not take because they wont vote anyways but would fail in the least. I’m for the civics test but it must be applied to those over 25 as well. I better not have one question about illuminate and Oprah Winfrey on it.

Cults do that I guess. Maybe they should get a clue then

I like the T-shirts but gotta say I’m afraid the Told You So shirt might be read by Trumpers as Told you he would be targeted by Dems. Not that anyone should worry what they think, but I’m not sure I’d want to wear that one.

otoh, that might make it perfect since everyone will agree with the T-shirt, no matter what side they're on. You won't have to pay for another drink ever again.

I just have one quick comment. JVL, thank you for going to LA to attend that event - so I don’t have to!

I went to college and grad school in the deep South back in the 80s. The people down there would always warn me of Yankee carpetbaggers. It's a supreme irony to me that this quintessential Yankee carpetbagger gets the lion share of his support precisely from these people.

You know what’s even nuttier? Honest, hard working people donate a portion of their paycheck to a multi-billionaire who travels on his own personal airliner. Trump made $4.18M on his mugshot because people think he needs their money to own the libs.

I'm sure you've heard the story of the 1991 Louisiana gubernatorial election.

Yep. Edwin W. Edwards who eventually spent time in prison from racketeering activities (up until recently I thought only people in Louisiana did racketeering type stuff 🤪) and David Freaking Duke.

How depressing is it that our neighbors don't think twice about voting for someone who is or has been in trouble with the law. Or for that matter, a freaking former KKK member white supremacist. 🤦‍♀️

That 1991 election was the fault of arrogant Governor Buddy Roemer (R-LA) who was the incumbent who refused to campaign that year. He suggested that everyone in LA knew what a good governor he had been and would certainly re-elect him. Roemer came in 3rd in the Open Primary, behind Edwards and Duke. Had Buddy Roemer bothered to actually run a serious campaign, he would almost certainly have been re-elected. I still have my bumper sticker from that campaign..."Vote for the Crook, It's Important!" Edwards (the Crook) beat Duke like a drum in that runoff.

It's a lovely piece, but in the end, did you wish to yourself that you should have let someone else go instead of the, should I say, the mannered debonaire from SFO ( the ghost town access to right-wingers.

Tim, you and Sarah Longwell have my incredulous gratitude for your ability and willingness to report back on your dealings with these people without giving in to an urge to yell “What’s the matter with you people?!”. You’re a regular Margaret Mead.

How about if we start having giant rallies for Biden or even ideological issues? Are Democrats just too dignified to get out in the public and make noise?

Expand full comment

It’s like if the Dems just keep doing the business as usual high road approach, then it will actually convince everyone to vote Democrat and save the US. It’s so crazy they are pretending we are one giant cohesive democracy. There’s absolutely nothing in the form of leadership actively doing anything short of Biden addressing it. Time to get unconventional. You can’t join the fight if there is no group to join. I don’t think we are going back to the way it was.

Republicans think so poorly of this country, why don't they all emigrate? I'd like to hear their take on the Justice Dept in China where I lived.
