Jill, Thanks for the excellent piece at this most needed time. Trump has Obama Derangment Syndrome and everyone knows it. He knows he can't hold a candle to Obama. The contrast between the two is not so much like night and day, but more like heaven and hell. Obama is all about humanity, Trump is all about himself. History will record the obvious.
The most concerning thing about Trump and his coalition is their total refusal to acknowledge a truth. If a fact doesn’t benefit the narrative they want to spin, they simply reject it. I don’t know how you combat Trump when the 35-40% of the country that somehow still support him live in a separate reality than the rest of us.
Thank you kindly, Jill Lawrence, for this concise perspective on the “mental issues” of tiny trump. 🙂
This monk still has his “Obama” t-shirts. They are “keepers”. 🙏
This monk from the hood truly appreciates the support of family and community. With financial aid for college, this monk is happy now that he can help others. 🙏
What a weak, pathetic man, haunted by the fear that Barak Obama, our first Black President, is smarter, more accomplished, and living a richer life than he is! Also, of course, there is the fear that Obama is truly loved by his wife, children, and friends, whereas Trump is merely used by the equivalent people in his life.
This being Juneteenth, gotta loop in some Civil War references.
Trump is just like many of the NYC financial types of the early 1860s who preferred the Confederacy and cotton $$$$ to noisy, low class Republicans and their talk of 'Union'. To the rich go the spoils is the only thing they'd regard as true justice.
Well, to be fair, Trump HAS topped Obama - he's the most destructive President in the past 100 years (and possibly the most destructive President ever!).
From my perspective Buchanan still has Trump beat, though Trump has surpassed Harding and Teapot Dome in the category of presidential corruption.
Too early yet to compare the fiasco of Biden's Afghanistan evac to Trump's Iran capitulation, though I figure the combination of Tariff-palooza and closing the Persian Gulf for a full calendar quarter (OK, overstatement, merely restricting to a trickle) will go down as the greatest sequence of economic self-harm any world leader in an at least nominally democratic nation has ever gleefully executed.
Before his fall from grace, Garrison Kellior wrote an essay on Trump that armchair psychologized that thing Trump wanted but never received was approval from the Manhattan elites and swells. To them, Trump was always a boorish outsider from Queens with no appreciation of art and culture and Trump couldn't comprehend why the Manhattan swells and elites cared about things like collecting art and support for liberal causes like civil rights because his unreconstructed racist mind only saw minorities especially black people as threats to property values.
Obama has the qualities that Trump lacks, Obama is charming, decent, funny, stylish, cool without effort, etc. Obama is loved by the Manhattan elites and swells in ways Trump never will be.
Trump will never top Obama, except in the minds of his most stubborn supporters. To them Trump, as a wealthy, but above all WHITE man, is legitimate, and in their disturbed, racist minds Trump's whiteness is what matters.
It's simply hating the cool kid. Trump has everything but actual admiration and friendships, two things the Obama's have plenty of. He hates that and it manifests every day in his decisions.
We saw again, in Michelle Obama's speech in particular, how just a description of Obama's character and accomplishments seems like a rebuke of Trump.
Poor man. Trump is going to die knowing that Obama will always get higher "ratings" than he.

Slava Ukraini!
Trump has never stopped trying to top Obama, and just keeps falling farther and farther behind.

Regime change in Venezuela, subtitled “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
Spot on!
There are a ton of reasons I could articulate but I will give you the TL;DR version.
I love and miss Obama.
