Haven't read Morning Shots yet (my coffee is still brewing so I have to wait) and I'm sure this is not related, BUT I CANNOT BELIEVE NO ONE IS TALING ABOUT THE FACT THAT MAMDANI'S MOTHER IS THE FILM MAKER MIRA NAIR!!!!!! The woman is a genius (Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, The Namesake among others). No wonder Mamdani is so forking smart and ran such a creative campaign. Geeze. Everything I have read only mentions his professor father.
Thank you so much for bringing up the US Steel corporate charter. This is so disturbing on so many levels. It is beyond socialism and veers into really dangerous territory.
So then the uninsured eventually go to the Emergency Room anyway and the Hospital and State and Local governments get hit with those costs accelerating the closing of rural hospitals.
Uninsured people have to pay for Emergency Room services. The hospital will sue them and take everything they have to get the money. Hospitals are relentless.
The Emergency Room has to treat anyone who comes in, but there is no rule that says it cannot charge poor people.
Some hospitals will be proactive and establish or invest more time and energy in their foundations which provide care for the indigent. Other hospitals will just summarily send their past due accounts to credit recovery agencies. I guess the people do get what they vote for electorally and by their actual presence and work in their chosen community.
Regarding the attacks on Iran, it is unlikely they caused much harm. The program can probably be restarted in a few months. That was the conclusion of the DIA intelligence report that was leaked. The administration denigrated the report but did not deny that it came from the government. As I understand, it is unlikely there was serious damage because:
1. According to NHK (Japanese National TV) no radioactive debris was detected around the sites after the attack. Nothing was released from underground.
2. Before the attack, satellite photos showed around 40 trucks lined up at the sites. They were gone during the attack. Iran has ~8,000 kg of uranium. A large truck can carry 4,500 kg. Assuming these trucks were small, it would still only take 5 or 10 to carry the uranium, so the others probably carried machinery and instruments.
The rush for the BBB is intentional. It's huge and not too many have the attention span nor the analytical ability to read all the gobbledeegook in it.
Someone should have been able to get a Cliff Notes version published.
Trump doesn't want a lot of into about the BBB put out there, so he bombed Iran.
He needed something to divert everyone's attention to the awful elements of the BBB.
Mainstream media has flown the white flag, they have given up trying to counter Trump's idiocy with any form of truth. They're afraid he'll sue them for millions or defund them.
I dont' watch MSM and I don't watch much cable news. Just a few people I trust.
I probably shouldn't even pay for cable because the selections are repetitive and awful.
Just read Krugman. He thinks about social media like I do. Currently I read Heather Cox Richardson and have great respect for the Substacks that give historical background. I read the Bulwark for the number of columnists who contribute. I read The Atlantic articles that come to my email or Apple News. I read some editorials/opinions that come to my email from the NYT and Post. I look at my local newspaper for sports, comics, and Jumble. Occasionally there are articles on local news. aa lot of content comes directly from the Today section. I read my paper on my iPad. I don't watch any Network news. Audible, Kindle, Amazon and Paramount and Acorn add ins along with Netflix is my entertainment platform. I have to have closed caption and need to pause for "let dogs out, let dogs in" bathroom breaks, etc. all of this to avoid work and who cares. Substacks are my form of intelligent (mostly) conversation.
Excellent point! We in New Jersey really need more affordable housing for those hard working people who subsidize red states. Now that would be a great use of our tax dollars.
Medicaid cuts aren't in the news because the entire news day yesterday was obsessed with the definition of "obliterated". Orange is like catnip to the news business and it does produce a sense of "fake".
The massive cuts to Medicaid are undeniable to any serious observer of the budget bill. They are also additional proof that Republicans will lie -- brazenly, consistently, uniformly and in synch with their propaganda enterprises -- to pass legislation that if the truth were widely known would have zero chance of passing.
It's the Republican superpower that they even have a chance of messaging this to successful completion. It's the same messaging superpower that allowed Trump to regain the presidency.
When you add together all the different MAGA mouthpieces, you see the immense tailored information system. Fox, War Room, One America, My Pillow, etc etc
I have to say that it's a pretty close race for that award in this administration. Also, the press secretary needs a slap across the face. I volunteer!!!!!
What a stupid headline. Of course they’ve noticed, how could they not. They are complicit in rolling back your rights and the legislation that was designed to protect them. They are accomplices in the administration plot to enrich themselves by stealing money from the poor.
I see this whole BBB debacle as typical of Americans views: too busy, too ignorant, too selfish to be bothered with the results of their decisions to support this man. It just takes too much time to actually familiarize yourself with potential impacts, even to yourself. I’d add another hobby horse of mine over the past few decades. I call it the, ‘Walmartization of America’. Big business loved Walmart’s business plan; low wages, little to no benefits, no real retirement support or benefits, no job protections. This plan has been replicated and ‘improved’ on for the past 35 years and has spread like wildfire (we have more of those too, but, how does that affect me?) across virtually all employment sectors with the exception of Federal{Hello Douche, er DOGE) and a few Unions {Hello Teachers). And as it has happened most of the public simply decided that if they didn’t have these things (retirement, sick leave, vacations, decent wages, etc.), then no one else deserved them either. To a degree, I see this attitude repeating with anything that the Administration’s actions might take away. Rather than be mad about it, they are at best ambivalent. If I don t have health care why should anyone else? And no matter how loudly you beat the drum, it’s going to be really difficult to convince people that they should care that the dear leader and his cadre of willing sycophants are marching these damn fool lemmings right over a cliff.
However, catch one of these MAGA (don't care people) in their specialist office, and they have a LOT to SAY and Much Expected. These people want free samples of expensive medications (and honestly, we try to distribute those meds to those people without means-- not so much to those with gold plated insurance plans and very high margins when it comes to their income/property ownership) and they demand a lot of other things, particularly the right to be an asshole to anyone behind a counter. They have their Medicare, their supplemental etc. When the idiots in charge come after the medicare, they will feel the burn. Most of these comfortable retirees could not give one fuck about Medicaid patients.... until they crowd them out at the ED.
Saw a pretty sad show at the drug store (can’t reveal which chain but its initials are CVS) where the folks behind the counter told an out of state visitor that his identification card - with a hole punched out of the middle of it - could not be accepted as proof of his address or personal identification and they couldn’t provide him with his meds. The guy went ballistic so the pharmacist came up and calmly explained that whatever med he wanted had a state mandate that valid ID had to be presented. The guy stood there screaming things like, “YOU SUCK, YOUR STATE SUCKS, and other kinds expressions of peace and love for five minutes whilst the crowd of onlookers stood in an ever growing line waiting for their chance to play “Let’s make a deal” in an attempt to get their meds. Good times had by all
Oh boy, I use CVS. But even my state requires some ID for stuff like Sudafed.. even some fitness supplements... it is bizarre. But who the hell travels out of state with out ID???? He is a prime ICE detainee candidate.
Well, perhaps the 1990 era dodge caravan, the MAGA hat and his ah, uh, pallor will assist in any necessary attempt to provide his bonafides as a true ‘Merican… I sure hope so
Yes! Gods plan is not for mankind to flourish and advance. It’s to celebrate every avertible tragedy with the certitude of an imbecile in a game of ‘follow the cruelest leader’ . Couldn’t agree more
I was being sarcastic.... you're in on that, right?
Yeah, the Stupidity of people who don't recognize that God gave us the ability to improve and grow. Rather rely on God to be saved, it gave us the ability to create self saving systems.
And God Spoke to SMiller: I will grant you all the ability to cure cancer, but no you are not allowed to cure anyone from cancer... except if you're rich... really rich and you pledge loyalty to MAGA and MAHA. Then, if the big guy is feeling it, and by Big Guy, I mean the really HUUUGE guy, Donald J Trump, then in about two weeks you are allowed to figure it out for that Rich Guy...unless, of course, The BIG GUY changes his mind.
Why do you need Health Care? We're all going to die anyway and, if we're supposed to die of cancer, or from a car wreck, it's what God INTENDED! And let's face it, if you beat cancer because of an intervention, then all you're doing is setting up a Final Destination scenario where you're going to die from something else, such as a detached 737 Max 9 door plug falling on you from 20,000 ft.
I agree. Have read many comments that echo your point. If I can’t have something, you shouldn’t have it too. This everyone for themself and forget about others should have run its course by now. When is the pendulum going to swing back? In my area, I see communities bucking this by overriding votes to increase education expenditures, and needs of the community in housing, recreation, and historical restoration. The voters see immediate benefits for the people of their community and want them to continue. But mine is a blue state. It needs to start happening everywhere.
Couldn’t agree with you more. I tend to beat on the same drum about these themes.I retired from the east coast and traded 6 months of winter (NH) for 6 months of summer (AZ). What I see here is that every financial shortfall suffered by the state is rectified by slashing public education funding ( which is pathetically ranked 49th in the nation)- except for ‘school voucher’ programs which are sacrosanct. The result- which should be obvious- is the degrading and gutting of public education, which only seems to result in an uneducated, uninformed and selfish view from the emerging electorate.
It feels like we're on an inevitable trajectory to when RFK Jr. bans all immunizations for children, America's parents lose their minds, and Trump fires him and says he didn't really know him.
"Apparently, the Justice Department, the Defense Department, and our entire intelligence apparatus have no higher mission today than to pursue the grievances and flatter the ego of the man in charge." Exactly ! That's how personalist rule works !
I hope it was for something that made you feel better in the moment!

Of course the media isn't reporting much about the disastrous bill. They stand to benefit from extending the 2017 tax cuts. It's despicable.

3. The sites were farther underground than the U.S. MOP bombs can reach. That is what various sources said, including Mark Hertling in the Bulwark article today (https://www.thebulwark.com/p/first-reports-are-always-wrong-iran-strike-nuclear-dia-intelligence-assessment).
Thank you.

Sometimes, I forget that this is The Bulwark Substack and not Reddit.
All the same to me-
Err, this place is more forgiving than Reddit (of which I am permanently banned). I participate on the uncentralized Federated boards... Lemmy.zip
