On a note I’m made in a restock on my Substack, I commented a comparison of the policy to the approach the government made during the 2008 -2009 Mortgage Loan Swap “bailout” where the government saved the big businesses, banks, investment bank, lenders, etc. while doing nothing to save/help the “little guys” (the home owners) form losing their homes. Often times the largest investment they will ever make was decimated. Some people had to start from scratch and many were homeless.
This case is so similar in that the Trump administration in that they are creating carve outs and tariff relief while doing nothing to help the small businesses that need relief as well. When Kristen Welker asked about the impact on small businesses after his criticism of her asking loaded questions and not focusing on the good stuff, pivoting away from small businesses to talk about the price of gasoline and the “fact” that the auto industry is going to make lots of money because of the tariffs.
Aside from the fact that the tariffs are a tax that is revenue to the us that will be paid by the consumers and will not go into the pockets of the companies, let’s not forget that the strategies that they were working on was based on a trade deal set up by Trump during his previous administration. The auto manufacturers have worked out an arrangement via that trade agreement that was mutually beneficial for the manufacturers and with both countries.
Final note, getting back to the original point I was making. We, as a country need to take a lesson form before and find ways to help/protect to” little guy”, but consumer and small business owners. His deception of what he was going to do on day one and what he is doing is going to have a generational impact on this country if something isn’t done soon!!!
